I’m a Mexican American soldier, I deployed to Iraq in 07-08 with the US Army... I’m also a Benavidez. I carry that last name with great pride because of my family and our history and also because of your dad. I learned about your dad while in basic training and since then I follow his history. I bought his GI JOE about 10 years ago. thank you for keeping your dads legacy alive and keeping the last name filled with honor and pride. Benavidez!

My battle still has his grandpas green beret as well with a picture of his grandpa and Roy Benavidez. Two wars years apart. Vietnam saw Abitu and Benavidez soldiers and Iraq again saw Abitu and Benavidez fight it together. Crazy story but true!

No wonder there is a Rambo movie with Sylvester stallone, it's definitely because of Benavidez.

    Yvette,
I met your father in 1984 at Ft. Jackson SC. at a AJROTC summer camp.
After attending and being exposed to such exemplary leadership, I graduated high school June 06 1988, and was in basic training 2 days later.
Since then I've served in 3 wars
    Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
I finished up in the 75 Ranger Regiment, with 3rd Ranger Bn.
I'll never forget seeing your father.
It was the yardstick by which I since measure leadership.
I reached out to Peter Berg ( He directed Lone Survivor) and requested a movie be made in your father's honor.

You hear of a few similar story's from WWII. But nothing that matches the heroic level of above and beyond the service your father gave his brothers in arms. His story is one of supper human effort that is so rare and unbelievable until the facts are told many times over. I can only imagine how proud you must be of your father. Thank you so very much to your mother and the rest of your fathers family that sent their very best and the years after his heroic effort that must have taken your father to heal. I took my father to several of these conventions to be alongside his fellow green berets and just seeing how they all walked so proud with honor was uplifting. Blessings to you and your family. Your Dad has been an inspiration for so many, especially for those of us who served in the military. However, my story is a bit different, I didn't meet your Dad the War Hero, but a kind Veteran who went out of his way to help a young military wife and mother with her two little boys. My boys and I were still waiting for test results and meds from BAMC. So, I popped into the PX with them for some snacks and other items, big mistake they were tired and both wanted to be picked up. I rested one the shopping cart and tried to carry the other on my back, but he was too tired to hold on, this is when your Dad came to the rescue. He graciously offered to help and picked up my sleepy child and placed him on his shoulders and helped us to the car. Sadly, trips to BAMC were almost a weekly occurrence and your Dad was there and recognized my boys and they him, seeing a familiar face in that scary place gave them a bit of peace. Seeing him was the highlight of our trips to BAMC, when they saw him they would run to him hug him, because he was the closest they had to a grandfather. As you know in the military we are often far away from family, this is especially hard on children, so in my boys' minds your Dad stood in the gap. I have never forgotten your Dad's kindness to me and my boys, though almost thirty years have past. I did not know at first he was the M.O.H. MSGT. Benavidez, yet I knew he was 5th SFG and we talked about people we knew in common or had both served with. However, it is the man behind the Medal that needs to be remembered as well, a man of great compassion, kindness, and patience. Someone who went out of his way to help a stranger and gave more than he received. He shared with my boys his faith and about Geronimo and the Quadrangle, he was not just an American of Mexican ancestry but Native American as well, this proud heritage he also shared with my boys and I. I would like to think the investment he made in our lives has been greatly increased as we have tried to share with others what he shared with us; that strangers are just family members we haven't met yet, that actions are greater than words and so is humility, also that the sense of Duty, Honor, Integrity and Family is not old fashioned and it is priceless. Yes, as American, and a Veteran of Mexican and Native ancestry (which includes Yaqui) and a mother of those who served, I thank you for sharing your Dad with us, the military community and the World at large.

For 17 years he traveled the world and at times he was not home. As a young girl, growing up I had to share him with the world. I'm understanding more and more that it was all worth it. My dad was very kind and giving. I'm not surprised by what he did...he was that type of guy. He did what he did out of love. I hope your children remember him the way you do, although they may have been too young. Once again, thank you for sharing a beautiful memory of an awesome dad.

Then I watched your video and thought; How many men would give up their beret tbat they worked so hard for and their D. Tags. But it seems like that WAS YOUR FATHER'S motto ; Do right by others who do right by you. Maybe that is more of the southern version but you know what i mean.
