You were right about the betrayal, but as someone said, it was drugs surrounding him, hence the song title and the turmoil created with the instrumental section. He escaped all of this when he was a teenager. It's worth knowing his history before you go down his huge rabbit hole. Thanks for appreciating him and the band. But i can definitely see how it could be interpreted the way you did.... And in a way, his mom being on meth while he was growing up did cheat him out of a stable childhood.... Billy is a good songwriter, which is an addition to most bluegrass music. Bluegrass is based mostly around the instrumentation with very little emphasis on lyrics. Except for base, all instruments in bluegrass are a lead, solo instrument. The stand-up however on some tunes, will take over a solo for several measures...
