    Great recognition of Adam Jones’ special talent. Too many dismiss his guitar ability because he doesn’t shred flurries of 32nd notes by which guitarist are often judged. His genius is in creating sound and projecting mood that sets the emotional tone for the song. It’s often very subtle and other times it becomes a vocal character, albeit without words. But it’s never solely a musical gymnastic performance; it’s always tightly connected to the song’s meaning/purpose.

    „Judith” (by Maynard’s other band „A Perfect Circle”) is the younger Maynard wrestling with this subject. „Wings for Marie” is, for me, the acceptance of it.
    You are quickly becoming my favorite „couple” analyzing Tool. The beautiful thing is, at least as far as I’m concerned, that you basically can interpret those songs in so many ways and almost all of them are so interesting!

  • @Vegaroth
    @Vegaroth Před měsícem +3

    I think this song is one of the most direct lyrics Tool has ever made. I don't see a lot of double meaning in his words. In my mind, he is singing the exact replica of what he would say in therapy, for example. He is both in anger and awe. Angry at his mom for her faith, and in awe for the exact same reason. Definitely angry at god, for "breaking" her, and for still being the focus of her life. He definitely is struggling with lacking faith, and at the same time being son of someone he considers the closest one can be to an angel.
    He puts me in his shoes in a way that makes me feel that anger as if it was with me. This song makes me cry tears of sadness and anger at the same time.
    Having said that, what really makes me angry is that you divided this one piece of art in two. Get the next one in, please.

    I never listen to this pair of songs casually. If I'm listening to the album driving, I skip these. To me they're for reflecting on lost family, and I always get emotional hearing them. Lateralus is my favorite album by them, but Wings and 10K days is a fucking masterpiece. The incredible musical choreography, singing the lyrics from his soul, and the deep deep emotions these songs elicit. The next song, with the slow building crescendo ending in Maynard screaming to heaven and challenging God, followed by the sickest drum/bass groove and breakdown ever into him coming to peace and finally saying goodbye and letting her go.... as good as any of the great classical composers' and masters' writing in my biased opinion.

    Maynard overheard members of the church where his mother attended speak about her somehow deserving her affliction. That she must have done something to earn the aneurysm that incapacitated her. That's where some of what he speaks to here comes from. He really addressed it in the song JUDITH by his other band, A Perfect Circle.

    Great reaction guys! You really read into this correctly - VERY astute observations! My sincerest sympathies to your losses.
    Usually Maynard is much more cryptic in his lyrics, but here, I think he really wanted to be clear...clear of his love for his mom and vice versa, clear of the 27 year struggle she faced, clear of her unwavering faith, and clear of her deserving to be in heaven!
    The 'accepting' nature of his words here should stand in contrast to his lyrics for 'Judith' by A Perfect Circle (Maynard's other band, it's a track you should review - because it shows his 'anger' in that one!)
