Now this is a valuable lesson. I learned something new today. I want to start my own business and learn to manage my own people someday, and this gives me a better understanding on how it's done. And part of it is admitting that you don't have all the answers, and that the crew members may know more than you. It's about taking the risk of trust. We have to be willing to take those risks as leaders.

I can relate to this. Back in the middle 90's I was a Non-Commissioned Petty Officer 3rd Class (E4) in the United States Coast Guard at a small boat rescue station in Northern Michigan. The District Commander, a 2 Star Admiral, was coming to visit which is normal to go around and visit all of the units under his/her command once or twice a year. Same with any branch of the military. The Admiral arrived, all of the protocols and cermimonial procedures occured for such a visit. After arrival and a brief speech to all hands, everyone was dismissed as the Admiral, Admiral's staff and our Command staff did their tour/inspection of the station. Of course we all went to the rear of the building where the designated smoking area was (to hide haha). After about about 15 minutes, someone yelled "Admiral on deck!" and sure enough, he popped around the corner of the building to our surprise. Standing at attention, we all were thinking oh no, we're done for. The Admiral then said "All hands E5 and below, stand fast (stay put), all hands E6 and above, you are dismissed. Still frozen, nobody moved. The Admiral then said "What part of all hands E6 and above, you are dismissed wasn't clear enough?" Shocked, they all left the area. Those of us E5 and below, still nervous remained standing at attention. Then the Admiral turned to us and said "At ease" (relax). He then said "I've been in this game for many years and didn't just get these stars put on my shoulders without learning how things really work and I know the true work of the service comes from personel E5 and below. You are the ones doing the daily grind of the service. I want to fix the things that are wrong to help you better do your jobs and fulfill your orders but I can't if I don't know the things that are truly wrong. Most people in higher ranks are worried if they tell me or other Admirals things that are broken in the system, then they may look bad so they pretty much blow smoke up my ass hoping I will be happy. That's not good for the system so that's why I'm asking all of you directly, E5 and below what is really wrong so I can fix it. Please speak openly but respectfully and let's collaborate on getting things accomplished the right way." We did just that, for about 45 minutes the Admiral listened to important issues we brought up. One issue I obviously can't speak of due to security issues was addressed and the Admiral said "Wow, I was not aware of the red tape involved in that procedure. Myself and the other Admirals are meeting in Washington next week with the Commandant, (the 4 star Admiral in charge of the United States Coast Guard) and I will bring this up." Sure enough, within 3 weeks, we received a message from Washington explaining changes to the procedure we addressed. To add emphasis with what Simon said, that was a true leader!

OK, regarding the bagel story: so you cut in line - entitled much? Then, you sacrificed choice, so you didn't really get what you wanted. You compromised and just got what was convenient (is that a good example of leadership?).
Agree with leaders asking for help. They won't do it, though, fearing they will look incompetent. I think I deserve a ceramic cup just for being me!
I want to like this but the bagel story left me distrustful. A person who says you can circumvent those who are politely waiting in line, and take what you want has narcissistic ambitions. He justifies it by saying "I didn't deny others from getting a bagel." But he doesn't know that. What if there are not enough bagels to go around? He has just denied somebody who waited nicely from getting his bagel. There are reasons why we stop at red lights and follow social norms like waiting in line. If he was not willing to wait his turn (5 minutes) then the bagel was not valuable enough for him. This story tells me who the author really is when he is not being singled out as being special. Frankly I just don't buy it.
If you listen closely, it was about not denying someone else a bagel - so the assumption here (as they obviously expecting a lot of runners), that there are indeed, enough bagels for all.
Its an illustration that you can take a shortcut - you are allowed to. There was no rule, no physical red light.
The whole *point* of that example was that you cannot deny someone else from getting what they want, so "He has just denied somebody who waited nicely from getting his bagel." shows the point may have missed you.
You should really look at more of his stuff, you don't have to agree on one point he makes - but he makes a lot of points, frequently - and you may not disagree with them all.
I agree, the whole point of this story is that if everyone takes a "shortcut" like he did, we get chaos and injured people as a result. The rule that says "wait in line" was there for a reason.
And from a more distant perspective, every time you take a shortcut you deny someone else what you reach for - simply because resources are limited and what we have in economics is called "competition" - we compete for limited resources. It's still OK to take shortcuts because this is what drives innovations and forces everyone to strive for efficiency. But the resources are nevertheless LIMITED.
I agree with Carrie. Reaching in between the line is still cutting the line. The choices are finite so Simon definitely is being impolite to everyone who waited patiently for their turn whether ahead of him or behind him. I think Simon just used a poor analogy and hopefully learns and changes his mind about seizing opportunities this way. We all want to feel we had a level playing field, the reality is that we don't and I would rather hear about leadership which levels the playing field for everyone and celebrates the one who wins fairly than one who jumps ahead at the expense of others. It appears Simon is blind to this right now.
I was actually waiting for him to say they joined the volunteers to help give out bagels or something in that line however he made some great points.
