While I agree with Sinek's message, David, I disagree with you about him selling something.
      He's selling a way of thinking/acting.
What's more, it doesn't matter that I agree with what he says here, it's simply his opinion.
Which is, of course, no more or less than my opinion.

"Made to" would defeat the purpose. Have 10-15 mins of Simon every few months, just enough to make him a reference point. Then see which manager says "Hmm, the thoughts of this guy resonate with me" and which ones don't.

"That means 90% of people still have a job". This is the first time I've heard Simon say something absolutely, horrifyingly incorrect. What is even scarier is how he proceeds to tell a fable regarding the US military with complete disregard to the fact that almost ALL taxpayer money goes entirely to US Dept of Defense, year after year AFTER YEAR...

This is what the made the WWII generation great. They suffered through and endured depression and war AND laid the societal foundation of freedom that we enjoy down to this very day. They didn't do it for themselves. They selflessly did it for everyone else; for the towns and cities that they liberated. They did it for their own communities. We are sorely missing that nowadays.

    • @jtnoodle
      @jtnoodle Před 7 lety +9

Actually, the WWII generation did it for many reasons, but especially for Mom. So you're wrong. Your logic is missing an integral piece. Why did so many volunteer to begin with, before they were even issued a uniform? They weren't in a foxhole yet. There were no "friends" to fight for yet. They DID do it for Mom, God and Country AND eventually for their buddies.

This was shown in my Nursing Leadership class today...the part about hospital culture is what I vowed to help change 3 years ago when I started my bachelor of nursing degree..I graduate in summer! I come from a theatre background. We work crazy hours, it's stressful and we have very high intensity jobs. Things we do in theatre that work are trust each other, we know each other intimately (each others' families, health, personalities) and we socialize with our colleagues (opening nights are fun!). Also in theatre we LOVE our jobs. We make art! But I truly believe that those mentalities can also be applied to healthcare and will work. Thank you Simon for instilling passion and ideas in people like me in order to make positive changes, in small ways!

Give and help because it's the right thing to do, not with an expectation of something in return. When you do this people appreciate you and relationship ensues. If you need their help in the future most people are very willing to help if asked because they remember when you did something for them without expectation.

Oh and by the way I've made myself a resume of what is really important along this inspiring talk, and I thought it could be useful for you:
13:10 - Risk when you do good to others
15:38 - Reason why confidence is important
21:05 - The impact of doing good to others
22:23 - Best part of doing good to others! (This is actually my favorite because it is true! And you have to try it)
25:25 - Don't expect anything when you do good to other, you can ask them what you want
    26:55 - Building trusts
34:10 - People who overly being congratulated VS The Average
35:55 - Doing things you don't expect you would do, as a team
37:10 - Having a clear vision is important!
Oh how I really agree with all that Simon talks about! Our world truly needs more people like Simon.
    Have a nice day! :)

There is an old concept from philosophy that focuses on the distinction between substance and form. Form is an attribute of substance, one of many. It is within substance that all value and meaning exists. What Simon so beautifully illustrates in this talk are the consequences of substituting form over substance in our interactions and our institutions.

I like the comparison with the hospital. It is so powerful. You might care for the business, for the product, for the future of the company, and how you as the individual are you being cared for? Often company politics win over people. With this experience, people will not put 200% of their effort and engagement. People learn not to trust, which makes their engagement next time even harder.
