    Got one of these for my dad's room in assisted living. That way I could check on him when I wasn't there. Caught a woman on video going into his room and stealing things. (not one of the regular employees). Filed felony burglary charges against her and emailed the video evidence to the police officer that took the report. Bingo! More than one use and worth every penny of $30/year.

      @R L Not everyone is equipped or able to care for the elderly. I know people that prefer to live in assisted living rather than with their children. It is a more structured environment that is catered to them. There are some bad ones but there are good ones as well.

    I enjoyed the fun special effect of the box disappearing. Just was cool. I thought your review was very thorough and included some really great comments, like mounting it on the door or that you can basically put it anywhere due to it being battery operated and has wifi coverage. I’ve owned the Ring Doorbell Cam for 5 years now and I’ve never, at any time, felt the Storage was a HIDDEN cost, they’ve been upfront about it even before I purchased it, of coarse, I’m in the industry so Cloud Storage costs are no stranger to me because I know what’s behind those costs and I feel they are reasonable.

    Paid £24 for the annual subscription here in the UK 🇬🇧 once the 3 month trial expired. More than happy with the cost. For those complaining about lag, ensure you have a good reliable Wi-Fi signal. I suffer zero lag. More than happy with my Ring 😃

      My Ring 2 was 2metres from the router. It lagged terribly, if in shower by the time the Chime dinged. the visitor was gone when I got downstairs. AFter 13 months (I would not subscribe) it decides to go awol. No sounds no vid, nothing. Took it down and it is showing damp inside. I live near a River so air moistire is common. did a factory reset and tried again it just fell over. I had ring 2 and 2 chimes, What a friggin waste of money. I now find out it is not IP rated in UK, yet it is sold as waterproof?
      I now have a £85.00 Chinese brand, that is also 1080p, came with mini sdcard for auto loop recording, you can replace and add upto 128mb. Yes it advertised it has onlige storage which you can pay for.
      It can screenshot from the live video , Chat in live view, so you can shout at your neigbours dog or cat having a crap on your garden etc etc. So far it is briliant.
      Neglible lag of only 1- 2 sec my phone will either ring or ding for motion. So i have time to open app and talk to visitor before they dump parcel in the bin or with a neighbor.
      Ring is a good design, nicely thought out IT project. But i just dose not deliver the goods. Ring always blame the wifi connection etc etc. Better software would solve that, dont blame the customer all the time.
      Peronoally I think Ring should be taken to court over claiming to be waterproof when in fact it is not UK IP rated. Every thng they do is now expensive. There are now better cheaper IP rated systems emerging, so why buy Ring?

    I agree with your comments regarding the monthly fee to make the unit manageable. Most importantly you also lose the human detection feature without a subscription. For this reason I have pretty much discarded Ring and now use Eufy products. Included onboard storage, 2k camera resolution, no monthly fees. Eufy has all of the best features and none of the negatives.

    22nd December 2019 - re : Storage of footage. Amazon has given permission to the police to access, download and use ANY content held on their cloud storage from these devices. From SCMP : Police officers who download videos from homeowners’ Ring doorbell cameras can keep them forever and share them with whomever they’d like without providing evidence of a crime, the Amazon-owned firm told a lawmaker earlier this month.
    More than 600 police forces across the country have entered into partnerships with the camera giant allowing them to quickly request and download video captured by Ring’s motion-detecting, internet-connected cameras inside and around Americans’ homes.
    The company says the videos can be a critical tool in helping law enforcement investigate crimes such as trespassing, burglary and package theft. But some lawmakers and privacy advocates say the systems could also empower more widespread police surveillance, fuel racial profiling and spark new neighbourhood fears.
    In September, following a report about Ring’s police partnerships in The Washington Post, Sen. Edward Markey, D-Mass., wrote to Amazon asking for details about how it protected the privacy and civil liberties of people caught on camera. Since that report, the number of law enforcement agencies working with Ring has increased nearly 50 per cent.

    I’ve had the ring pro for 2 years now. Im not sure on the later modules but I connect mine on 5g WiFi and the picture looks fantastic. I now have 7 ring cameras and one thing folks overlook is WiFi quality . Any one of my cameras will open the video feed In less than 5 seconds but I have 5 ubiquiti access points in my home. You must have good WiFi signal for any wireless camera to compress a 1080p stream to your device and I see lots of people ignoring that. My 2 cents.

      Thank you for that. I just ordered a Ring and am anxiously waiting for it. My thoughts about the complaints mentioned, was that issues WERE a WIFI issue. Perhaps a WiFi extended would correct the issues. Subscription cost is $30/yr., It's $2.50 a month! This includes your neighborhood, with a map of other Ring owners, so you can share videos between neighbors of possible crime. For me, this is a no brainier. I could be out of the country and be able to answer my door. Just adding my two cents.

    The 5 minute project took a couple hours as the Ring was too wide for the existing space. I mounted a piece of wood to the uneven brick at the 4' height and extended the wire. The angle bracket would have made the job much simpler, but ruin the view. And the view is a fish eye, but not too bad. It would be nice if they just had flat spacer to tuck in the wiring. I would have bought the Pro that fits my door, but the ratings are so so, and I just read that it needs a 16-24 volt transformer. I would have to replace my 10 volt existing doorbell and transformer. And yes, you did a great video.

You're required to turn on live feed to see more than 20 seconds after detection or no recording. Also it can be tricked into not recording after 20 seconds it needs another 30 seconds to reset to detect and record again. MINE IS GOING BACK TO LOWES WHERE I BOUGHT IT. The RING. tech team seems untrained as to fix these and other problems after 5 long calls. DO NOT BELIEVE THESE GREAT REVIEWS AS THEY ARE PROBABLY RING BOUGHT REVIEWS. I have used it so many times to help me troubleshoot that I keep it in a baggie in my toolbox. My dishwasher for example was not working right so I put the camera inside a glass jar and set it inside and closed the door. It was able to give me a perfect signal while inside my stainless dishwasher,it also gives a perfect signal from inside my refrigerator. I have both the Ring door bell and the Blink system. In my experience the Blink wins hands down. Easy to adjust, just as good pictures and you don’t have an after market fee. And I have had several incidents that I’ve called the police on. They look at the videos and say “ that’s nice” so I’m not that thrilled with that aspect. And as far a the Ring goes , it drives me crazy with the alerts. Every time a car drives down the street and adjusting it isn’t easy. So if someone is thinking about a surveillance system, I’d look at Blink. Just my opinion.

    So part of the system, that is amazing in my opinion, is the cellular backup option that comes with the alarm system. This means that if someone was to cut your phone line and even, somehow, trip your power, your cameras are still going and transmitting to the cloud. $10 a month for this system with no installation fee and the easy setup plus wide range of simple device setups, makes it very simple to make a pretty awesome home security system. The $10/ month for this option seems like a no brainer for me. Also cloud based storage for $10 a month on an easily expandable security system is a steal. Imagine you want another camera, well a few hundred and an easy instal and you are golden.

I turned it on and off at will, from my phone. My internet was actually down for a few days and it was a relief to know my property had its alarms all in tact. Shame it wasn’t the cameras, my mistake about that, but the alarms and cellular backup was a nice touch.

    I love that they would replace it if it was stolen, but how long would that take? I hate that you have to pay a subscription forever, I think that's cheeky and a bit tasteless when so many already pay for cloud storage of their own. I also think that given the battery takes so long to charge, it should come with a 50% off a 2nd battery voucher. They really are trying to rake the money in anyway they can.

    @MtnBadger Před 3 lety

    When I ordered my ring, I also ordered a second battery (shaded porch, no solar option for me).
    When the current battery runs down, I just pop in the other battery and I don't have any down time while the dead battery charges, which can take a while.
    The nomenclature says "4-6 months" for battery life... That's on a biiig curve. If you don't get much traffic or motion in the sensor range, it'll last a long time. We have a lot of traffic on our porch, including a cat who has figured out that if she hops up on the rail by the bell, she can trigger her slav... umm, "people" to come open the door for her. She sits on the rail and stares intently at the door until we open it. If we don't respond fast enough for her, she jumps on and off the rail until we get with the program. lol
    Also, with a second battery, if a battery should fail you don't lose your doorbell service while your waiting on a new battery to ship. It's not that expensive and I highly recommend it.
    "Neighborhood" has found a lot of lost pets and warns about package pirates, people breaking into cars, possible con-artists, etc. It's a nice service.
    Connection lag will depend upon your wifi and phone interface. Mine takes a little longer than some... But, when I'm in my livingroom, I have an "Echo Show" and ask Alexa to show me the door and that happens pretty fast. Either phone or Show, if someone is standing there, waiting for you to answer, there's pretty well always enough time to respond. If it's a package delivery and they "ring and run..." you may see them leaving.
    When I had surgery and couldn't just get up and answer the door (which is why I got it in the first place), it was a true blessing.
    Also, if you're not able to get to the door or not home and you get a "signature required" delivery, they'll usually release it anyway because the ring camera is a record that you authorized them to leave your package. That saved my bacon when I had important medicines delivered and would have missed it had I not been able to tell him to leave it. That made it worth the investment, right there.
    The video quality expectations are the one consistent "knock" I hear but it's still plenty good to see who's there, make an identity for the cops if needed, etc. Hopefully they'll have an upgrade one day but, it's not a good enough reason to not buy it when you consider all the benefits.
    The need to wait or move in the camera to change settings has already been upgraded. It's no longer needed.
    U know people sometimes feel "cheated" because of the $30 yr fee as opposed to Arlo, etc. but when you consider all the benefits and how it ties into my ring security system which is less than ten bucks a month ($100yr) for full, live monitoring, which is cheaper than anyone else, it all comes out in the wash. Just be aware of it and no biggie.

    People thinking about buying one of these should be aware that it only functions properly in areas where internet service is truly high-speed, which, in my state (AL), is only in the major cities and outskirts. Where I live (waaaaaay out in the sticks), the most high-speed I can get is 6 mbps on the download side and only 0.5 mbps on the upload. That means Skype or other 2-way video programs/devices (like Ring) are pretty much useless. We have one of these (Ring 2), but video resolution is never any higher than 140, and even then, the audio cuts in and out and the video freezes and stutters. For anyone thinking that us country folk should use HughesNet instead of the slower-rated DSL phone company we're using, been there, done that. I did happen to catch enough of a video of their (contracted) installer cussin me out after I told him to get out and take his crappy equipment with him for the HughesNet Regional Manager to have his contractor fire the guy, but anyway, even DSL is more reliable than satellite internet. We were lucky to get 1.1 mbps DL, and 0.1 or 0.2 UL. Ring was literally useless with those numbers.
    I understand most people watching/listening to this video live in urban or suburban areas where high-speed is now so common that it's taken for granted. It was quite the culture shock for us when we moved here from a bigger city in AL where we had 70 or 80 mbps with hardly any outages via a cable modem. But we do have security concerns out here too, as do other rural dwellers, so I thought it pertinent to mention the limitations of this system for those who it might apply to. CCTV security systems are probably better for us, but there are also connectivity issues if you try to go wireless with them, and I really didn't want to run all the wires throughout the house that I would've had to, so we gave Ring a try instead.
    Good video. I still enjoyed watching/listening to it. 👍

    • @SteveDOES
      @SteveDOES  Před 5 lety +2

      Good points. Sounds like you prefer a wireless system. Something to consider is Arlo allows you to record locally to it's base station but, having a good home network would be key. Arlo is currently developing a feature to allow you to view your locally recorded footage from their app. No cloud subscription required. I'm really looking forward to that. You'll probably still have the same streaming issues when you're away from your house but, once your phone is back on your network you can quickly stream all your recordings for that day.

    I HIGHLY recommend Wyze cams vs ANY RING devices. RING needs high end wi fi 100/20 at least, to work well. Wyze doesn't.
    Wyze cams aren't doorbell activated per say but, you can have your WYZE cam either detect motion and record or listen to noise, such as a doorbell chime, to begin recording. We have 3 RING devices and 5 WYZE cams as a more reliable backup recording device. Knowing then what we know now, we would have saved HUNDREDS of dollars and just bought the WYZE cams.

  • @dash8brj
    @dash8brj Před 2 lety

    Just like products have Energy ratings and battery requirements, things that need a subscription need to have a big sticker with a $ sign on it outlining the cost. And just like when products get a recall when a major fault is discovered, products that have no subscription, and then move to a subscription model should be able to be returned (even years later) for a full refund.
    Having said that, $30 a year for the basic plan (assuming you'll only get the doorbell and no other ring devices) is pretty reasonable.

    Also, this device uses SIP. Where I work we also use SIP and many of the related ports have been blocked or redirected for business use.
