- Join me on a solo overnight early winter camping trip in a bushcraft shelter. Skillshare: skl.sh/taoutdoors12201 I build a raised bed, keep warm by the long fire pit and enjoy an early winter camping night under the moss roof bushcraft viking house. In this first overnight in the viking shelter I cook meat over the grill on the fire. Temperatures got down to 3 degrees Celcius with heavy rain in the morning.

I had Hernia Surgery a few days ago so I'm stuck at Home now Recovering watching Your Channel. Thanks for Sharing. From Southern Oregon.
I did the hardest hike of my life yesterday trough Kulla halvön in the south of Sweden. Motivated by you. I cant thank you enough for getting me on the track of enyoing the great outdoors. Fantastic video man. Much love, yours truly.
That’s awesome!!
Being a dad will change you in ways you could not have imagined.
Great video
Agreed! It’s hard to remember what you done with your life before you had kids tbh. actually feel sorry for all these modern types who think it’s great not having kids because they like their “freedom”
used the moss tip to clean all the kitchen dishes, wifes thrown me out the house now, cheers mike 😂
At least you know how to survive in the woods. Silver linings! 🤣
🤣😂😂👍👍
These overnights really are my favourite videos to watch
Glad you like them
The best way to find peace ☘️
You are one of the most talented and likeable human beings on the planet. Hands down.
Thank you Mike - Not only for sharing your knowledge but also being entertaining as hell while you do it 👍Take care.
Wow, thank you
@@TAOutdoors No, thank you Mike. Once all this pandemic stuff is over, you and Dustin have an open invitation to come to Vancouver Island, BC - anytime you want.
Hahaha yeah “we have fire baby”, Young Bloods Crew rock!!
You and your Dad should hook up with them next year, your dad would love fishing for the fish they catch.
Tip for the mold on the bedframe, clean it off using fire, then char the bedframe it will not rott on u anytime soon
Newly homeless I needed this, appreciate it
Stay warm, Mr Tuck.
@@joelmorris2364 thank you brother 🙏
@P J it's the little things brother
I really hope you are safe. How are you homeless w/ internet access?
@@ogsavage1928 thank you so much :) , and my phone, I work, I'm not a lazy bum 😂
Loved the new baby sleep schedule. I was on swing shift for her first two years too so I was knackered all the time. Much love.
Would love to see the collaboration with Brodie Moss. Winter trip to see how he can do in the cold! Then you can head south for some Aussie survival on the beaches.
Always enjoy watching Mike . Enjoy the quiet time from the little one. They are wonderful but the away time is rejuvenating, Those 11 PM nights are easier after a night away.
You r above the best Bushcraft channel out there Joe R#### this is what bushcraft is . Keep it up TA Outdoors
When my grandmother was a kid, she used to go with her grandfather to collect sphagnum moss that was sent off to be used as wound dressings in WWI so it's pretty hygienic as a pot cleaner.
Hoarsetail ferns are really nutritious in spring and have silica that is also good for pot scrubbing!
I do love a Solo Overnighter - Heres an idea, do an overnighter with a fan. Choose someone who wants to do it and do an overnighter with them. get to know them, their back story, what got them into this sort of thing. share views and idea's. would make for a great video i think
Nice breakdown on starting a fire. You have excellent attention to detail and thus didn't skip any details. Very helpful.
Love the YBS shout out.
After watching these videos, I always find myself looking for birch trees in the woods. How many I have found ~ zero 😂😂. Not exactly native in the Carolinas.
I feel for you. Birch bark is an excellent tinder material, and you'd be hard pressed to find a woodland in the UK without it. But that's what bushcraft is all about - making use of what's available locally. There must be a material local to you that was used thousands of years ago to use as tinder. I know on Mike's videos, when he's been building Viking houses and so forth, he's often said "This probably wasn't exactly how they did it, but I'm working with what I've got". There are loads of different things that can be used as tinder, it's a case of doing a bit of research and finding out what your local ancestors used all those years ago :-) But I hope you enjoy the experience - and education - of finding out. To me, that's a large part of the fascination of this stuff, you're never too old to learn something new.
@@nickdavies6547 Absolutely! Thanks for the advice. We always make it work one way or another 🔥. I just hear about it all the time and it looks amazing. Actually my next door neighbor has a white birch tree in his front yard he planted forever ago. I’ve thought about running over and “borrowing” a little bark to see what it’s all about😁🤔.
Cleaning the floor inside the shelter and removing the debris as good as possible is the way to get rid of the fungus.
Yes so a night in the saxon house !!!
These videos are awesome. There are 3 ways you can view these types of content.
1. skillful survivalist
2. historic architecture
3. The Hannibal Lector of trees, scourge of the forest.
All equally enjoyable
Amazing shelter by the way!👍
You talking and showing your personality has made me enjoy these videos so much more. Don’t get me wrong, the older videos are great but you shining in these, and tell me why I always watch people and they always end up being from the uk. I swear I gotta make the move,
The wattle walls remind me of a shelter my nephew once made up in the hills near where he lived. We were planning on doing an overnight camp there but the shelter's location on a wind-swept ridge and the holes in the walls meant that it would not been much colder sleeping outside in the open. We ended up going to a lean-to he had made in a more sheltered spot.
If I were making something like that hut, there would definitely be daub on those wattles - we get icy winds that feel like they could peel paint.
6:45 your tips on this topic is a lifesaver. On my usual camp it rains a lot so making a fire can be tough. But now I've realized that I need a wood base. That's very useful. Thank you Mike!
Life IS Good!! Living in my RV full time and digging into my 3rd winter. So happy you are camping again. I learn so much from your videos and am looking forward to more!
Your more daring than me, i wouldn't dream of sleeping where there's mold.. I'm glad you moved your bed... love your fire building.x
Hello from Connecticut in USA,
Another great video, Mike. Yes an overnight in the Saxon house sounds great especially if you also do a small project to improve the interior space in the same episode.
But always, always, always my favorite videos are when you and Dustin get together for a project, a meal, and a beverage. I hope "the Rona" lets you guys get together soon. Stay well Mike.
Love these overnights. This is what brought me here way back couple years ago. Been looking for a piece of land so I can start building my own forest fort :)
Keep it up bud!
Thanks Shane!

Was wondering if you'd ever "team up" or collab with Simon from "Simon, a Bloke in the Woods" on CZcams
@@eventsotherthingswithchris9019 I do like Haze outdoors too, he deserves a bigger following, lovely bloke, funny too, but also many others, too many to mention..or I can't think of them cause my memory is a shocker!
Great job. Yes it would be great to see a video of you in a solo overnight in the Anglo Saxon shelter. Keep up the good work. God bless you and your family.
I was just wondering where you've been yesterday and boom, new vid. Great content 👍
I've lived my whole life in the mountains of North Carolina and I'll tell you, I've never seen a pristine outdoorsman 😂😂😂😂 I like watching the places they go, but it irks my nerves how they are NEVER dirty lol. And the clothes, $300 shirts, $400+ pants... 😂😮 Nah, I get clothes to camp in at Goodwill 👍👍👍
As a kid this is what i always wanted to build in the forest
It is so soothing to watch your vids, Greets from Germany!
Love how chilled you always are in your videos, makes for a great watch. Thank you & much love 💕
Happy holidays to you and your family! Holidays with children is so much fun! Enjoy every single moment!
TA Outdoors, he & his Dad/best friend *'Walk the walk'*. Simples. 👍!!!
Surface burn that moldy wood to kill the mold and preserve the wood.
Scotch Eggs are Marvelous! Classic Pub Food in the US in days gone bye when 'free lunch' was offered along with the purchase of a big beverage! I am accumulating 'new age' basic gear with the idea of 'showing the ropes' to my 7 year-old twin grandchildren: primitive fire starting; today's better pans; folding stoves...next Spring! A-Frame designs not only waste space, they seem to wick moisture up more than if a vertical wall supported the structure.
I always look forward to seeing your new videos! They're the highlight of my day!! ( And you're good at thanking the sponsor s as well!)
DINNER LOOKS GREAT
Simple and enjoyable! Most times that is what it's all about. Great to see you back out there.
Glad to see you out camping again, I just love these type of videos from you. Come to think of it all your videos are very high quality and very entertaining to watch as well as informative. Keep up the great work can't wait for the final chapter of the bunker series. Good on you and hello from Michigan USA.
So jealous of you man...thanks for the video!
Always nice to be out in the woods, west coast of Oregon is locked down again
Yes do an over night in the house
Getting almost “Into the Wild” vibes with that plane!
Joe Plane!
I'm 13 and I find this channel really interesting keep it up Micheal! 😁👍
the ground mold looks to be innocuous and beneficial to the area's ground nutrients
what you mean by that so he won't get sick if he sleeps in there with the white mold???
🇨🇦❤️Thanks for sharing another ‘overnighter’ with us. Those chops looked delicious!
That little clip of your daughter that was temporarily on your Instagram profile was the cutest thing I’ve seen in a very long time. She is spectacular!
Love these vids
Hey man! I love watching your videos - you do great work getting a polished final product out for us to enjoy.
Regarding the kids - if I can share a bit of encouragement with you...it gets better!! I've raised three, and they are all teenagers now. My youngest has become my "any time camping buddy" and we have such a blast getting out and trying the stuff we see on all the bushcraft videos we see on youtube! :)
All things considered, I've enjoyed every stage of the kiddos growing up. But, it definitely gets better and better as their vocabulary and comprehension increase. Children are absolutely amazing. You seem like you've got a level head on your shoulders, so I'm quite sure you're doing very well with parenting. Hey - we're all just winging it if we're honest! Anyways, have a great day/week, and I hope you and your family enjoy your Christmas holiday!
Have a very Merry Christmas and let’s hope for a better New Year.
💐Asalam o Aliakum💐Dua ha Allah Pak give all of you the long lives alongwith Eman saifty happiness and good quality health...Ameen 💐 From Pakistan 💐
Here it’s winter -28c windchill. Winter camping soon. No bugs. No people. Cheers. Be safe.
Nice to see you out in the woods again Mike, keep the films coming, we need them!
Mate, to help prevent funghi growth in your shelters, scrape the top inch or two away of the floor where your shelter is going to be before building (or once its in situe), and any timbers you use inside and out always debark to remove any funghi that will spread spores inside the shelter. The outer bark is where all the bugs live, where the bacteria is, and more importantly where the funghi and the funghi spores are, Even if you have one small patch of infected wood, it will spread and thrive in the warmer dark climate you are creating within the shelter. Debarking the timber you use will most definitely help prevent that problem from happening in the future.
Love your videos by the way, i watch them all the time.
Great to see things are pretty relaxed, and cool. It's 38 degrees Celsius here in Australia and over the next month or two it will get another 10 degrees more. Would be nice to be somewhere cooler. Enjoy the camping when you can for yourself and also those of us who are busy on the farm and don't have the chance at the moment. Love the shelter. Thanks for your vid :-)
Nice to see you out Mike, all the best to you and your family for the coming season ,
Same to you!
i like how u take it so easy ☺
Brilliant! What a fantastic way of life! Love the channel. Thank you and God bless
I just have to say you're an incredible human being! THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDS!
Great video Mike, one of your best ever in my humble opinion. 👍🏼
Have a good Christmas and Prosperous new year
When you doing an overnighter with Dustin in the roundhouse??
so relaxing as always
If you also put some stones below the firepit, could help with getting the fire up and running breakfast.
Also, hot stones could be used for warming
Just be careful where you put them
As a fellow dad I know this is impossible, but consider doing a overnight with a +1 (since you'll get bored probably) in every house and make it a multiday.
You forget, Jax got on that roof, too, and wouldn't stop. You could use the lean-to shelter as a tool shed, put the chair in there and your saw horse and maybe a small pile of wood for your next visit. I thought wood ash was the go to cleaner or that just for cast iron? Anyway, I wish I could be outdoorsy, it looks so calming. Thanks for the vid.
I love love love that you added humor to this video!! Thanks for sharing this with us :)
Moss great way to clean the pan. We used to use used teabags to clean mess tins years ago, similar technique, great video Mike 👍
Great vid Mike. Been binge watching loads of your TA Outdoors stuff recently. 👍🏻
Glad you like them!
I'll have to go and watch the video of you and your dad doing an overnighter in the Saxon house, I must have missed that one:)
It was way back in Ep.6 or 7 I think???
Cool vid I like these kind of videos
You are a very charismatic guy mike!
i only need to watch 10 minutes from your videos after work and i'm chilled ...
thx for your awesome stuff and keep on going!!
PS: i am so happy with my TA Trekker Full Loadout!
Love to see a over nighter in the Saxton house
Just great getting away for just a little bit. Solitude. Good video. Thanks.
I was searching for good clothes and thanks for the links! I just bought me a good outdoor jacket for a price fitting my budget and I am very happy. Love your vids, thanks!
Love your videos!
Informative and fun!
Thank you!
Take care and be safe!!
Such a fab location Mike brilliant
Love to have you back!
So here is a tip for you. Wood ash will thwart moss and mold. Make up a sloppy slurry using about 2 pounds of ash and water and slop it on the walls and floor. That should cure your problem.
Without knowing what type of fungi are present, I think I would have exposed the bedding logs to the fire - perhaps to about 150°C or so, just to kill any harmful spores. If it were raining during your/my stay, I would have also made a "tent within the house" by hanging a plastic tarpaulin over the bed, just to stay dry. Nothing elaborate in either case, but something to keep me safe and dry. Thanks for the video. Jon
I just got back from Okinawa Japan and im in quarantine on base. Gonna be here for Christmas. And then I'll make it home to see my family for new years. Havent been home in a year.
Love the big builds but it's nice to see some old one-on-one with Mike. I do miss little Jack though. If we don't see another one before Christmas, may you and the Family have a wonderful Merry and Blessed Christmas!
Good to see you back out in the woods ! Can’t beat a nice fireside cook up !
I enjoyed watching this and found it informative and useful. Especially making the fire keep it up. Congratulations on becoming a dad👍
