People who watched Wemby closely in November realized that he was pretty much forced to learn how to isolate against NBA defenses, which is a tall order for any rookie. So watching him not completely fail was an early sign that he was a fast learner.

When he has a season that's effectively "in the trash" he focuses on player development and one of the parts of that is giving players who are not point guards time at the 1. He did it with DeMar and he's doing the same with his guys now

Hey JJ, idk if you read this, but if I could make a suggestion for the podcast: The other two guys have very great microphones in front of them, but it's obvious that their settings are set to their shitty webcam microphones (which I'm sure is an accident). If they could actually set their input devices to the good microphones they have in front of them instead of the webcam microphones, that would GREATLY improve the podcast.

I'm a hardcore Spurs fan through and through and was very understanding of people who preferred Chet Holmgren before the turn of the year. But since Pop moved Wemby to the 5, there has since been zero doubt who the rookie of the year should be.
He's been playing the 5 since December
Pop putting Sochan at pg was a purposeful way to tank the first part of the season, and it really made Victor press early in the season because there was literally no flow on both sides of the ball. Mix that with Zach Collins being in the way and being a negative in almost every way, and you could see why people that didn’t watch every game would be flippant about the Spurs and Victor. It’s all good though now, we’re going to have a top 5 pick and hopefully we get that Toronto pick as well (if they fall out of the top 6 when the lottery is done). Then the next 5-6 years we have an arsenal of picks. It would’ve been nice if Pop had allowed us to play with a point guard right out the gate, but if it allows us to get an additional great pick, I guess it’s worth a bad season overall. I am praying Atlanta craters the next few years so we can get Cooper Flagg and AJ Dybantsa lol

Don't want him banging downtown with the likes of Joker, Embiid, Sabonis, and Brook Lopez. That's most likely why Pop started him at the PF at the beginning. Let him get used to the physicality a bit before taking on the big boys.

Also got a bit unlucky with scheduling as they had like 5 games in 7 or 8 days or something like that so he tried to go against Houston but wasn't fully back so he sat the following back to back games. Should be back tomorrow against GSW if I had to guess

I think its poetic that the one team that has always treated the game right, playing the clean and right way, is blessed with a generational 1st pick every decade that also fits their personality so well, disciplined, ambitious and unproblematic. Beautiful.

I’d still say kudos to Chet for being in the conversation with the rookie GOAT. And maybe a flower or two is due to Pop? The fact that he’s just a shade behind Brook Lopez defending the pick and roll is mind boggling. Lopez is the very definition of a veteran defensive specialist and Victor is a rookie, which tells us he’s a really smart dude.
Pop knew since day one that Wemby would be unstopable as a 5. But he wanted him to learn how to play as a 3/4 in the 1st half of the season. Actually pop had a kind of road map of how he wanted Wemby to learn and grow and set the pieces around him. Next season will be scary
That "only player ever" stat at 11:00 is even more ridiculous when you take into account that he was playing 25 to 32 minutes per game for almost this whole season so far. Like what the actual heck lol

His team when he's on the court vs when he's off the court also has the highest delta in key variables in the entire league (defensive rating, offensive rating, etc). Each time Wemby's block results in a change of possession, it is worth about an extra point for the Spurs over a block that allows the opposing team to keep possession of the ball. Plus it's hella awesome to see him either 'catch' the opponent's shot attempt or pin it against the glass. Each one is a change of possession.
Wemby should be defensive player of the year!
Wemby is all time talent and very important is that he landed on Spurs.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime talent getting a Doctorate from Pop. Let's not over-complicate this. If he had gone to Charlotte, you might have seen more production earlier, but you wouldn't have seen the growth. Also, they just beat the Nuggets tonight, and Wemby was the best player on the floor. They caused a 5 sec on the last possession and it looked like they had just won the Title. That is Pop's influence.
I'm an OKC fan so I love Chet but Wembanyama is clearly above anything we've seen.

I simply want to declare how spoiled I am as a sports fan. I am now in my mid-40s and have been both a Chiefs and Spurs fan for practically 30 years. I not only get to enjoy the run Patrick has taken my Chiefs for the past 6 years, but now, after enjoying the ride Timmy, Manu, and Tony took the Spurs on what has already become 10 years ago, but now get to enjoy watching Victor develop on my favorite team! He could possibly be the best player in the league by the end of next season!

@@seththomas6727 well, I grew up in the Kansas City metro and was drawn to the Admiral and their head coach, Larry Brown, being a former coach of the Jayhawks.
Once he gets a few solid vets, a second legit star and an efficient PG it is over.
I think the best compliment to Victor is the state of the game today. He is so versatile and moves so smoothly. His ability to shoot the 3, learning to post up and play one on one in the post, he can make mid range shots, great shot blocker, he can pass the ball on par with Pops expectation, he fits the culture of the Spurs and he’s a true 5 tool star. He learned the speed of the game very quickly and he’s only going to be more dangerous
I am an OKC fan and I believe that Chet should be second in RotY. Realistically he is not doing as much as Wembanyama which is really not to blame him. He is not asked to do that since the team does not need it. JJ Redick said it best. We have to account for role.
I was on team Chet and I was 100% wrong. Chet is incredible and is going to dominate for many years but Wemby is the best rookie I've seen since Lebron.
Same here. I love seeing how Chet fit into the OKC squad and I love watching them playing. But individually speaking, Wemby is a whole different thing.

The initial disappoint came from the spurs offensively looking like a pickup men’s game. Team throwing up shots before Wemby got down the court, in turn that had him playing a style where he wasn’t 14:13 really a matchup problem despite still having decent numbers. When the team Iq improves it will be a problem.

People need to understand how important it has been that he was drafted to a team with a coach and front office that has structure. Imagine if this guy was drafted by a team like the 76ers. Wemby is also a lucky guy too.

There were some great talents in the past who have not been able maximise due to front office, bad systems, bad ownership and other non-basketball intangibles
You're completely right. As a seed, he required the right soil. Most NBA teams, aren't the right soil for the majority of young players.

Most often that leads to never ending player changes and excuses to keep their own jobs. 76ers are an example of jumping from one thing to another every year.

This isn’t a debate about legends, but I’m glad that wemby has the mentality that he does. he has the chance to be an all-time great, and just the way he speaks passionately about basketball and his mentality feels very kobe/mj like. The NBA needs more people like him, rather than players, who just want to collect a check.

To me, it was clear from the get-go that Wemby and Chet weren’t even in the same class.
Yeah the fact Wemby has to eclipse Chet to win ROTY says so much about narratives for the NBA. I get they want a rivalry between two promising players. We all do. But Chet plays on a much better team. Wemby averages 3.4 APG, could easily be 5 or more with better teammates.

Also, the tough part of the NBA isn’t just the games. It’s the travel. The two a days. The quick turn-around between games )(one scouting report just done, gave to start prepping for the next), diet, regimen, understanding the ins and outs, learning the offenses and defenses, knowing how to taking to certain situations and what to take away from huskies, etc.
Chet got a year of that whereas Wemby just came in as a foreigner. An example would be a high schooler living college life and sitting in on college classes for a year but not being tested or scored then taking the class the second year, vs. a high schooler taking the class right off the bat. Not even course.
It was just such an overwhelming advantage in Chet’s situation and these people are making it a rivalry because they got skill similar stats through a handful of games lol. Sometimes I wonder if people just look at stats and make their final determination. Wemby is only going to be better.
Going from "there is nothing wemby can do to win ROTY" to "he is having the greatest rookie season of all time" in just 4 weeks should tell you everything you need to know about how much effort they put into their analysis'.

As a Spurs fan, I'll be the first to say I didn't hold it against people if they chose Chet for ROTY before the New Year. Wemby was putting up some impressive stat lines but Chet was almost matching them. So when people were factoring in wins to the equation, I didn't agree but I saw the logic. Now, if you think Chet is the ROTY you're either an OKC fan or a hater lol
As an OKC fan it took me awhile to concede ROTY to Wemby, but we can't win every trophy and Wemby really is special. Still not backing off SGA for MVP though.

Wemby was always better from the start. He scored 38 points against the Suns near the start of the season. Problem is the Spurs are a bad team and hard to watch sometimes. Feels bad that they were going to penalize Wemby for being in a bad team.

the way i see it is chet is putting up some decent stats across the board and more efficient on offence however if you ignore turnover, feb has been a breakout month for wemby confidence wise, STOCKS (steals=blocks) are crazy in feb, 71 to 41 and +34 on the boards over chet. with a higher ppg for feb. if wemby continues this is a wrap for both dpoy and roy
Here’s the problem with the whole “different roles“ argument for Chet versus Victor. I fully believe that if Victor was on a team with an MVP caliber player like Shai, and multiple other competent scores and passers, defenses would not pay nearly as much attention to him, much like Chet is played now. The only difference is, while Chet is very efficient in his role, I really believe that Victor would average 25 PPG and 13 RBS. I am very efficient shooting. Chet gets wide open looks in the flow of the offense, Victor is having to be out on an island for most of the season, just having to create everything for himself. He’s also much more aggressive than Chet, and I think this is just the rookie year difference between a potential GOAT candidate, and a potential all NBA talent. Both are great, but there is a considerable gap.
How could anyone not see this? I seen this last year, especially knowing he beat Rudy Gobert at 16 lol. He can move more athletic than most guards. And can shoot uncontested for the most of the time. Legend in the making. Can’t believe you didn’t see that. And everyone talks about basketball IQ. lol Vic is one of the best rookies ever. He doesn’t even play 30 minutes and we do not even know many players on his team, still averages double double and leads league in blocks.
You can only have an athletic big (however big that is on your roster) play him tight before he even gets the ball and just try to make him work as much as possible.
Got to watch his last game of the season, at home against the Nuggets, and to see him play in person is breathtaking. Closest to NBA2K24 in the flesh. Further more, his humility and desires to learn and improve are perhaps the biggest part of his game, it’s just non analytic, although it appears to be endless.
I don’t think it’s crazy to say Wemby might be the MVP next year.
