Why Wemby is your 2024 DPOY:
- Leads the league in blocks (by far)
- Leads the league in stocks (by far) - #2 in steals league-wise in February…
- Spurs defense is elite (#5) with him on the floor. Could have been higher had he played center full season…
- Spurs defense is DEAD LAST when he’s off the floor. Not only dead last but also historically bad defensively. Competing for the “worst defensive team ever” title when he’s off the court.
- Only player with 10 blocks in a game this season.
- Only player with back to back 5steals 5blocks games since MJ.
- And the number of shots the opposing team does not take because he’s there is probably his biggest argument that does not show up in the stat sheet.
- Opposing teams are setting high screens, double screens, re-screens, just to make sure he’s out of the paint… for a rookie… That’s how impactful he is.
He is the DPOY and it’s not even close.

BPG isn't the only judgement in DPOY, I agree, But Wemby isn't just leading BPG, he dominating it by leading 50% more BPG than 2nd highest BPG (3.6 vs 2.4). It's something very special achievement for a rookie, especially 3.6 BPG is also highest in last 7-8 seasons.

I'd say the three guys with the best argument for DPOY are Wemby (Spurs are 29th defensively without him and *6th* with him, plus the bonkers rim protection and passable perimeter defense), Rudy (anchor of the best defense in the NBA and a titan at the rim in his own right), and Bam (low-key been putting CLAMPS on people all year). @@franklinfisher497 Nah, I don't know Luka's rookie stats but I have seen comparisons between Wemby and LeBron's stats and Wemby's numbers are definitely better especially if you consider per 36 min numbers because a lot of people forget, Wemby played limited minutes for a huge chunk of the season.
Be that as it may, it's different eras so take it with a grain of salt. Luka now is also better than LeBron's best seasons stats-wise but that doesn't mean Luka is better period. Once again, different eras.
