  • Payment is required to ride subways, buses, and trains, as well as to cross bridges and tunnels. Fares and tolls pay for our employees and are critical to keep service running. Find out what we are doing to combat fare and toll evasion.

In Germany, no stations have fare gates. Instead, customers only need to purchase and hold a valid ticket before riding. Occasionally, station security will perform random security checks on random customers. If they ask a customer to show their ticket and they don’t have a valid one or refuse, they will be arrested and/or charged with fare evasion. So customers can technically get away with fare evasion there but at their own risk, since it’s only if they’re lucky enough to not get randomly selected for random security checks.

You show us all of this but what are you, the NYPD, the D.A.’s across the city & the NY State Legislature doing to actually arrest & penalize fare beaters? It’s clear y’all aren’t doing enough and it’s hurting the rest of us honest riders & if you don’t get a true handle on this, y’all are gonna cut services and that’s the last thing that we need. Treat this crime like it’s as serious the other crime that happens on the subway. Get cops on these buses like yesterday. The buses are the absolute worst, especially in The Bronx & it’s like the wild Wild West now. Stop talking & start doing!

The rate of prosecution needs to be as close as possible to 100% for anything to change. I'd recommend adding facial recognition cameras, and creating a database of repeat offenders.

All license plates are recorded with cameras. So anyone who avoids paying will be tracked down by the authorities.
