  • Working in the Dumpster Business, you learn a thing or two over the years. Having owned both a hook lift truck and truck and trailer I've learned that they each have their own benefits!
But this in this video I go over the pros and cons of both, and the #1 reason I own a hook lift truck!

No. For me it's all about safety. The NPR has no front end protection to the driver in the event of an accident. You don't have the protection of a hood, motor or any distance between you and another vehicle.... just glass ( the windshield ) While none of us plan on getting into any accidents, I don't like the fact its only the windshield and then my body. Outstanding question BTW.

Depends also where you are operating.

The guys that I really have a hard time understanding…
Are the guys who believe they are doing better by running dump trailers, instead of dumpsters.

What happens when the breaks the maintenance the welding astronomical. Wouldn’t it be better to buy a used freight liner Hooklift. I’ve heard you can get them for like 10 grand put the hook on there that’s gonna run about 10 grand and hire a welder so for $30,000 you can get a used Hooklift truck and 10 dumpsters about $
75,000. But of course, if you’re going to be running a Dinali which is a $90,000 truck in my opinion why go so extravagant in a very an nonextravagant industry you’re probably better off getting a 7. 3 gas
I heard they are like Godzilla‘s. I ran a dumpster business for years using dump trailers and I’ll tell you why I think you’re better off when you have a pick up truck with its own bed attached to a dump trailer you could haul everything you separate the metal put that in the truck and the garbage in the dump trailer Just my opinion but I guess different strokes for different folks. A lot of guys are getting away from diesel and going into gas trucks. You’ll make a lot more money. That way my friend. I’ve been in this business for 20 years I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Diesel engines are hands down, more efficient, and more cost effective over the long term, compared with a gasoline engine of comparable power.
Running trailers, substantially increases your maintenance expenses (I can see no way around this). You need to run the numbers realistically if you don’t think so. More tires, brakes, axles, lights, etc.
If you are trying to maximize your profits by separating out the recyclables that pay…. You’d be doing yourself a favor by creating a sorting facility for yourself. It’s an investment, to be sure…. But one that can pay you back handsomely if done properly.
Most of these factors really come down to one question, (being completely honest with yourself)…
Are you trying to run a business…. Or a side hustle?
Hope this helps anyone reading it.

Key phrase in my comment, “over the long term.”
Break the numbers down over the lifetime of the truck…. And a diesel truck will cost you less (per mile, or however you want to quantify).
A big part of this is the sheer longevity of Diesel engines. A Diesel engine will easily put a million miles on the clock when properly maintained.
Gasoline engines have improved immensely over the years…. But I would still consider one done by that point…. While the diesel realistically can be rebuilt and run another million miles.
Of course, by the million mile mark…. Most guys are sorta “itching” for a new truck anyway, lol

However, in most applications, that’s pretty extreme overkill. Most of the usual roll off operations will never require anything heavier than the #50,000 unit (which also shaves a solid #1,000 off your tare weight).
I didn’t get the price on that though, since the numbers (pricing AND weight) were getting too large, so I’m looking at alternative methods of achieving my goals.
