I feel so bad for her because she was so nervous to perform after so long, but I know her voice is better than before sounds more connected and tone is nice. I think when shes not nervous she will give us the best she can❤ love you mariah❤
Her biggest issue is she doesn’t train her voice. Trust me, if she did she would be amazed at what she’s still capable of. But her process of resting for a period then vocalising and seeing what she’s got on any given day is what is giving her such an unpredictable instrument. There’s no foundation
This is probably just that she was so nervous the day before that she did not sleep well, then on top of being tired she was suuuuper nervous, because of all the scrutiny on her voice and her stage fright, so her thraot closes. What I don't get is how she doesn't manage to take some sleeping pills or something to keep her damn nervousness under control after aaaall these years. It's like she has this self-sabotage thing we all have, me included, where you do worst when you have to do best. Then you hear her in an insignificant event and she sounds amazing. I love her and I hope she sorts that out soon.

That part! I believe same as you that it’s self-sabotage. There are too many tell tale signs of a lack of preparation for these big moments. She wings it, her nerves get the best of her and she ends up sounding a mess. I think she knows she has problems but low-key believes her voice is damaged so perhaps it’s a mix of ego and fear keeping her from consulting a professional voice coach. However, I think she would be surprised how much of her decline is down to her vices and lack of training than any actual damage cos there are times she sounds very healthy. If her voice was damaged she wouldn’t have those moments but she does, so it’s all her🤷🏽♂️

What poor Whitney sounded like in her latter years was just plain sad. Loved her dearly but her voice was just gone.
Her vocal circuses may fade with age as any other singers do BUT her unique Mariah tone will live forever and as a very picky listener that is what I always look for a singer, the unique tone. Mariah Carey will always be a global treasure!
1. Her duet with Pavarotti was great!
2. No one has come to replace her yet.
3. She's no longer 20, she can't just go on raw talent.

That's the thing with music. No replacement is needed. An artist will have their prime and demise, without anyone coming to take their place. Every new artist bursting out creats their own place in the industry. Nobody's threatening Mariah, it's just that younger generations prefer new acts. All artists stop being relatable eventually and they are remembered for their past achievements.

I was actually very surprised when I first heard this performance because I quickly realized that she seems to have almost completely stopped that staccato-singing style she was so fond of in the past few years; she seems to really have regained some semblance of legato. Not sure what caused that issue in the first place, but I'm happy it's now a thing of the past...hopefully. : )

At least she’s singing live! 👏🏻 sometimes we strive so hard for perfection that we forget that imperfection is happiness, just like watching Mariah still singing for us with her imperfections.

Her fans always coming for other artists, making fun of them and their vocals, especially Jlo, Madonna and Christina make it hard to just be like '''Oh okay, at least she's singing live'' even when she hasnt been great either. Her rehearsal sounded much better. 😢I was a bit let down during the whole performance. She had some good moments, but for the most part, I expected her to sound much more healthy and fluid than she did given her recent interviews and twitter spaces. I’ll love her no matter what. 💛

I think she still has it, her quarantine performances showed that. She just seems to be her worst enemy at times. The corsets, the breath control etc.
It still amazes me that even in current voice she’s never compared to anyone else except her younger self.

True. Her nodules were acting up this day. And being honest, this performance was disappointing and almost bad tbh. But I'm sure upcoming performances would be sooooo much better!
@@francis3792 I’m not convinced her nodules were the issue tbh. Nodules affect the quality of your tone but not your breath support etc. It sounded like her vocalisation apparatus wasn’t sufficiently warmed up. Who really knows how that day transpired backstage. If I were to guess she was likely up all night and then spent the day doing press and by the time the performance came she had nothing left to give. Mariah can still sing, it’s just a shame she tends to bomb on the biggest stages with the most cameras watching🤦🏽♂️ Personally, I think she should stop doing these kinds of performances, as they tend to do more damage to her reputation than good tbh.
@damyanthelion It sounded like to me she was taking or using her voice too much to be honest, and she was nervous also maybe was doing those Instagram videos where she was hitting all those high notes to prepare for Christmas & Halloween during the same time she was preparing for this performance too
In fairness to her, we don't know whether she's ill. We've been here before around 2014 when she did 'All I Want For Christmas' at the Rockefeller Center. It was REALL BAD and you could even hear her on the isolated mic feed stating how she wished she could do it again. I've no doubt she will come back with some AMAZING vocals....she always does!

I appreciate this analysis.
Her lower register is still in good shape and she still has the ability to do fluid runs.
Her upper chest register is still disconnected and staccato-like. Often time she stops and starts singing multiple times in the same phrase. This is probably the nodules causing this. I agree, proper breath support and increased fitness will definitely help with this. I remember in 2005-2010 when she was in great shape and it really helped with her upper belting.
On a side note, the upper ascending head voice run on “whose” was spectacular, and definitely live. The highest she’s gone on that word probably ever.

I think we should cut her some slack ,this was her first live performance in two years and in front of a HUGE crowd and at a show that was broadcasted on tv so I imagine that her stress was reaching sky high levels while she was singing , I know that once she starts touring again she will absolutely have many moments of pure vocal excellence just like she has always had in the past … she’s known
To have horrible stage fright and I think that for 32 years in the game her voice is more than enough and holds up really well still

I love the honesty Georgina it’s nice to have a lamb who’s also honest!!! I think nerves got the best of her here, her voice is also slowly declining too which doesn’t help her. I wish she wouldn’t be so nervous I feel like that causes so many problems for her.
I know from personal experience if you feel like you can’t hit a note you kinda panic and then substitute using compensatory methods which usually aren’t good for the voice. I feel like Mariah does this a lot which is increasing the speed of her vocal decline, still love her tho❤️ my fave❤️

At this point in her career I’d love it if she just did at home performances like she did during quarantine those were great and received positive reactions from fans and the general public 👏🏼 I get that she gets paid more at these big events but she rarely ever sings well at them unfortunately.

She sounds better than I ever have or will. About the bit about Celine Dion singing daily, most vocal coaches I've listened to advocate small vocal rests, even if it's every other day.
Honestly it was good to see her! she looked gorgeous as always AND I did enjoy her voice because just her tone alone is so special for me.

Well I’m not a vocal coach but I am honest when I say I really enjoyed her performance! It’s not always about hitting this or that note! And I completely disagree on the We belong together reaction! I think she nailed it and I can’t wait I for her future projects, lives etc.

I’m a huge lamb and I have to disagree with you. No, it’s not necessarily about hitting this or that note but it needs to at least have fluidity. She’s out of breath, it does seem to be taxing for her. I will always love love love my queen but we have to start taking things more seriously. Working on connected notes, hopefully working with a vocal coach. I’m just being realistic. I can’t look at a whole concert and be like “oh we belong together was great!“ but nothing really else.

I was there live too, you can tell at the beginning of the performance Mariah was realizing she didn’t have it that night. Took a few pauses for throat spray, she sounded great at the rehearsal the day prior though

I hope when she performs more she'll be able to be more consistent on her vocals. I know she's been mostly on hibernation during pandemonium, now that she got the "rest" part I hope she'll also get the "train" part
Love Mariah!!! One of my ultimate favs! The soundtrack of my youth!! She clearly has to do something to improve as she is only 50? Barbra Streisand absolutely never sang live for 27 years but returned to concerts in 1994 at age 52 with a mature, powerful, well-rounded and of course technically brilliant voice. She returned 6 years later with Timeless at age 60 and still possessed the technical brilliance she had for years. Now at almost 80 she is only showing vocal decline, but cant really be called decline as the voice just mellowed, became huskier but like fine wine it still maintained a heavy tone. Her belting is still in a class of its own, so I dont necessary agree with vocalizing or singing all the time to maintain a voice, or I guess Barbra Streisand is just what many believe to be.... A one in a million example. Love your videos!!!!!!!

People tend to forget the nodules. A lot of people lose their voice to it. For her to have sang like she's done for as long, its impressive. It's not just a get fit and everything will be okay thing

And why the nodules? My singing coach told me it had to do with the overuse of whistle notes.

I just know that she is working hard in a lot of projects! Her voice was in a good shape only few months ago, I don't say that she don't have the shape now!! because I think that she only was especially nervous in that night because it's her first show in two years and as she said they let her rehearsal in the day when she is so horse and tired.

Totally agree. I thought I sensed the nervousness in the performances but it was between songs for me where she was talking like 100 mph. She does sometimes talk fast but this was way beyond that....almost like a manic mode. It's okay to comment honestly...I appreciate honesty. I realize that some people will come for me but that's okay. The intent here is not to bash her or to take away from. We know she is still very bad-ass and she is far from done singing. I'm actually looking forward to her future projects. We're just giving honest critique on the moment at hand. I do sincerely appreciate her participation in the festival because I know the fundraising from the event will make a difference in others' lives.

I'm a huge lamb myself and this wasn't her best performance but not her worst either. She just needs to rehearse more and alter the keys and I think she'd per perfect (or close to it). I've seen her live twice in the last 10 years and she can definitely still sing regardless of her naysayers!
I think if she actually was trying to hit the notes that she didn't, she actually could. The 2009 version is what she has been performing and not the original.
Love Mariah, I think there’s a lot to be said about how certain artists lean into their vocals maturing. Kylie is an amazing example of, in my opinion, someone’s vocal technique and tone really becoming something even more pleasant and strong as she’s aged. I think likewise Mariah’s live performances of newer songs are stronger as she’s adapted her style, shame she only did the classics here.
I feel like her instrument has changed, if she can get with someone that can guide her with using what she has to work with . It might not be her 1995 instrument. But a better understanding of what she still has, she will adapt and overcome ! It will sound new and different but we won’t be clinging on to a memory of what she “used” to have! It will be embracing her newness ! She will always have my heart!

I think she just had her voice tired that day but she had to make it through the show! And that happens when we have to do a show that was previously scheduled and we have no choice!

Can she still sing? Absolutely. Is it painful to watch/listen to her sing her own songs in a way that kinda takes away from their iconic status? Of course. One thing is for sure Mariah will continue to perform and make music cos that’s just who she is.
I honestly just wish she’d get rid of the tight fitting corsets, ultra high heels that all make her seem really uncomfortable when she performs. She seems out of breath; she can not move very well, she literally needs help to move anywhere on stage..😖😖
This! Exaclty! Why have people not addressed this for her? She is usually an amazing vocalist. I've noticed she sounds very out of breath and like she keeps trying to catch up on it, like continuously walking though the sand, while talking, and never reaching the beach.
No matter what, her voice is still one of the best for ears ;)
Also remember.. her rehearsal call time was 7am and then her actually performance was 11 hours later. So that means she had to be up at 4-5am to warm up her voice especially with nodules, and her voice was just probably tired from having to get up so early and warm up. I know when I have to get up early and warm up if it’s not slow and methodical especially if I didn’t sleep enough, my voice feels dry all day no matter what, and a little raspyyy.. if I can help it I run on a treadmill for blood flow. A lot of her performance was actually pre recorded and they were even pretty rough as if she did them in the studio the night before or somethinnn. Listen closely.. the only songs she did completely live was always be my baby. Hero she lipped the runs and “the wayyyy” at the end, but it was just ehhhh. We belong together was live until the second verse, Heartbreaker was barely live, honey was all lip, obsessed half and half. She came out the gate lipping the first song. Idk. I’ve seen her live and I was a bit disappointed bc in 2019, I saw her and she sounded so buttery and she was so comfortable and confident… and even though there were prerecorded tracks, they were for certain notes and certain parts of songs. Not half of the song. Idk. I still love the heck outta her tho 😍😍
I thought the second verse of WBT was lipped as well, but I listened a few more times and feel like just the "I can't sleeeeeep at night" part was lipped because there was some variation from the Valentines mix throughout the rest.
It's not just about getting in shape. Wearing a slightly less tight dress would help. If the dress was looser she'd have more breath support.
Thank you honest coach for providing a realistic view of her vocal situation. I’m a huge lamb just like yourself and I just can’t keep making excuses over and over again. It’s always “oh she’s nervous, oh she didn’t get rest last night, oh she’s been recording an album.” She may be recording songs and yes that can be taxing however; we have to be realistic with her life choices. Even in a lowered key it’s just lacking a fluidity that we hear in the recordings. Also, you can’t do rehearsals a day before the big event. You have to constantly working on your actual vocals not just for recorded songs. That’s why I feel or hope she’s working with a vocal coach.

I think we can all agree that Mariah doesn't have her 1996 voice anymore, and as you mentioned, that's completely normal. We put so much pressure on these artists nowadays but this girl has sang every note there is on the musical scale, she has 19 number ones and has delivered a complete album for each year of the 90's. As recently as last week she became the biggest selling female artist when her album sales were updated. She's got nothing left to prove. I love what she and her team are doing recently, with giving her older catalogue some well deserved love. Imagine having been this big vocal powerhouse for two decades, and still having that musical creativity and urge to "paint and color" with vocals, but having vocal chords that won't allow you to do so. She's constantly adapting to whatever state her voice is in that day, which I admire. I'm glad the lambily is loving, caring and appreciative (we learned from mama herself) and that we're doing better nowadays, so we don't end up having another Whitney or Amy. I'm proud of her for what she has achieved, and I'll take whatever she has left to offer. But secretly, I'm still hoping for that 20th number one single, so she can break that Beatles record for most number one singles.
Regarding the "Look inSIDE you and be strong" vocal, where she chooses the lower option instead of going for the album version option. She's done that for decades. It's one of the songs she's sung at nearly every show throughout her career. To keep things interesting, she would often "downdress" the first chorus, to do the higher option during the second chorus, then back into the lower options for the bridge. It's her way of keeping things comfortable while maintaining some dynamic buildup throughout the song. But yeah, I agree, this is not her best rendition. Partially though, I feel this is due to the sound-team as well. Her vocal sounds completely dry in the mix. No reverb, no warmth, no FX, nothing. If you give me a dry mic feed I'll sound horrible as well, especially on a big ballad.

Losing weight would be helpful too. That corset is probably too tight.
One thing about Mariah is that she hates being told what to do (If you've read her memoir, it is quite evident). Having said that, I am not sure how this would work out for her. If she's not willing to take vocal training seriously, I think it's better she avoid big events like this altogether. I can just imagine the stress.
You’re absolutely right and I’m a lamb, but you have to start taking your craft more seriously. As fans we can’t enable the behavior and ignore certain trends. She has gained weight, she doesn’t like working out so that’s the cardio right there. She hasn’t been working with a vocal coach, and her memoir does show that she does like to do things her way which isn’t necessarily bad if you don’t have bad habits.

There is no doubt her voice is not the same as it was in the 90s. There is no chance she can return to the 90s Mariah we all love. Think of all the years she has strained her voice with power ballads etc, and she is not getting younger. If you listen to Mariah in 1993, and now in 2022, there is a HUGE difference. I wish she had a professional vocal coach as splendid as you to look after her vocal state. During her prime, I think she was a better singer than Celine because of her unique vocal texture, which has in part to do with her nodules I guess.

She really needs to just get rid of the tight corsets, which obviously make it hard for her to breathe😮💨 and or move comfortably while singing, her voice should flow better after this is addressed, she has such a beautiful tone but her inability to prolong her notes affects the performance we are used to. Her voice is so beautifully unique and it is also possible she felt the pressure of it all, singing live again after so long.💛 It wouldn't be the same as when she is home in a comfortable environment, so here, it feels very forced and tired. I hope she gets all the vocal rest and then breath strengthening needed, because we know and hope this lady does indeed Carry On.
Now I'm not sure if you'll see this but what I think over of her issues with not being able to belt or sounded winded is she has to be wearing done sort of corset underneath her dress.

What I respect so much about Mariah, and I don't believe many people see it the same way, is that she doesn't usually even attempt it if she doesn't think she can do a decent go at it. So she ducks notes, changes things up seemingly on the fly and does about the best she can, but you don't hear a ton of bum notes because she just ducks the note if she thinks she can't hit it. some people hate that, but I admire it. She's lost portions of her voice obviously and is out of shape so struggling a lot of the time to perform well, but her mind and incredible knowledge of vocal performance remains every bit as great as it ever was.
I think it has a lot to do with her being nervous and possibly the why she sounds dry because y'all forget her natural singing voice is a alto, and all her soprano notes come from nodules so her being nerves might effect her voice more then a person who doesn't have nodules also she was doing a lot of very high notes to promote Christmas and Halloween so I don't know if that was done during the time she was preparing for this performance but God knows how many times she hit those notes to make her video they was she wanted it

when mariah sounds like this it’s because she is vocally tired. she said in a twitter space recently she is working on a “inspirational” album (gospel) and has been using her voice a lot when she should be resting for upcoming performances (global citizens festival). this means she’s been in the studio recently rather than strict vocal rest, which explains the vocal fatigue here. I think your analysis is very harsh and delusive but considering you’re not a die hard fan, it’s expected. this clearly is mariah not at her best but now you know the reasoning. I thought y’all would’ve learned by now, don’t ever count mariah out! she always comes back better than ever. christmas time is approaching❤️
I mean, granted, this is her first performance in front of a live audience in three years, but I agree, this wasn't her best and I believe that she can do better if she builds up her stamina and confidence.

It's weird that she used a cell phone video to review this preformance. Both Global Citizen, and Mariah Carey have put out videos tha sound good.
There is a lot of word "shame" in a reaction. She is already 53 years old, her body is worn out, and it will only get worse. But each of us comes to this sooner or later.
She was so good in lockdown. The extended version of We Belong Together is magnificent. It is a shame because the rehearsal of this was better. Hopefully she maybe gets a singing part in a movie or something and invests time in training her vocal stamina. Mariah is THE vocalist.
Because she used autotune for those lockdown performances & especially that WBT extended piano version. She recorded note by note - phrase by phrase. And she sounds like chipmunk because her pitch is corrected & some notes are stretched using autotune. 😑

I think it wasn’t that bad, I agree fitness is a factor but remember her songs are also hard to sing and we can sit and judge how she didn’t do well but try singing her one song and understand it’s also not easy to deliver the exact same tone.
Wouldnt it have made sense to just leave Hero out? Agreed she IS one of the all time best vocalists of all time …. And she deserves props for that. Shame , i hope we get Maria back to a comfortable place again
I'm going to say no on this one, only because of the festival and the purpose of the festival. I think it was appropriate to have in the song line-up. This was a very large venue. Once she starts performing in more intimate settings again we'll start to see some stellar vocals. I honestly believe the largest culprit here was letting her nerves get the better of her.

The dryness is definitely from the nodules (which is what wear and tear is). It used to be something that you only noticed at the very top of her range, but by the late 2000s it was present more and more. Now her belts sometimes are almost all rasp. Interesting texture, but difficult to fit into her song catalogue. The nodules have even started to affect her whistles, you'll notice she's sounding polyphonic. Maybe the nodules could be reduced in size and hardness instead of removed completely? I'm sure Mariah would kill for even her 2000s voice condition.
And yes, she needs to do some cardio. So many of her songs rely on immense breathe control. If her technique needs more breath now, he needs to get fitter to find that breath.

I honestly thought she sounded wonderful. Had notes in there that were so Mariah…and I don’t mind the changes she made to make the performance better overall.

Thank you for the honest review. Ditch the corset and high heels and Mariah needs to hire a vocal coach or be humble enough that she needs an expert’s advice. Still I love her and the greatest vocalist ever lived.
