  • This works on all Chrysler 3.7, 4.7 & 4.7HO engines. Caution should be used when using a 3/8 extension as shown in the video as the extension can get stuck in the crankshaft snout. If the extension has sharp edges at the end, this is more likely to happen. I would recommend watching this video before attempting the 3/8 extension trick • How to Remove Harmonic...
    It would be best to use a 5/16 metal round stock 7 1/2" long. This is also a great video for VARIOUS APPLICATIONS: Compatible with Chrysler, GM, Mitsubishi, Cadillac, and Oldsmobile vehicles; Cars, SUVs, vans, and pickup trucks.

    To those wondering if the HO version Harmonic Balancer will work on a 3.7l V6, it will, but will wear down faster. I had my engine swapped in a Dodge Ram 1500 3.7l V6, and the mechanic put the HO version Harmonic Balancer on it. It worked fine for about 7 months and i started getting a horrible grinding sound when I hit accelerator and in idle you could hear clicking sounds like lifters.. The HO Harmonic Balancer was vibrating and had a lot of play near the main bolt holding it in. I believe what caused it was the extra weight of the HO version as opposed to the other version with the large holes for the wrenches.

    Would there be any reason to swap the regular 4.7L harmonic balancer to the unit from the H.O 4.7L? You mentioned weight, so im curious if this would be an upgrade to a standard 4.7L to get the H.O harmonic put on.

    I used the Autozone kit and put the rod in tightened it down - it bottomed out so we removed it and could not get the rod out of the Bolt. It was stuck - stuck - stuck. Had to use a vice and a prybar to get it out. I watched this and saw that the rond went in and out easily. I still don't have the balancer off yet. We will try your extension trick tomorrow.

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  Před 4 lety

      Yeah as mentioned in the video the AutoZone kit does not work properly because the longest rod is too short. The ABN puller however has the correct length rod. When using the extension trick make sure it feels that it will not stick at the bottom of the hole.

    Hey Marting, What type of grease do you use, or can I just use engine assembly lube? I want to make sure I am not contaminating the engine oil with something I should not be putting in there...
    Thanks!

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  Před 4 lety +1

      You can use any type of Grease. You're just applying a small amount and it is only going in the hole of that crankshaft which will not contaminate engine oil. If you are using the 3/8 extension trick that I shown in the video make sure that the end of the extension has rounded corners and when you place it in the Bolt hole of the crankshaft that it rotates freely and does not catch. I had one or two viewers that got the 3/8 extension stuck in the crankshaft. And that is due to the fact that some extensions have very sharp edges at the end. Obviously the one I used in my video I did not have that problem because of the rounded corners it has.

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  Před 3 lety

      Can't say for sure oh, you would think a 130-135 foot pounds of torque would be more than enough. On the GM harmonic balancer is there a keyway or do they just simply Press On and that may be why the 240 ft lb of torque.

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  Před 2 lety +1

      Once you get the harmonic balancer pulled off you should be able to pull the seal and reinstall a new one. I would also check the condition of the harmonic balancer where the seal makes contact and make sure there's no ridges worn into it from the seal itself. This could also cause a leak.

      @@martinbuilt the claw tool will not work in srt8 damper !! As the damper has rubber rings and claw will pull off outer damper ring leaving in the center of the core of damper!! Best i find to use is the duck 3 bolt steering nd damper removal tool bc of the way the damper is built on 6,4 it has nd sits in rubber rings !! So to pull out the damper , i noticed it has 3 boot holes in damper to pull from with the duck tool puller , that way all of the damper will come out , nd not just outer ring !!

The damper do have 3 bolt holes to be used for pulling out damper on srt8 just found out trough some research !! Easier way to do it is leave the bolt that came out of the harmonic balancer in the hole but unscrewed and clamp the harmonic balance tool on the bolt and tighten the tool up and twist and it should pull up and you can take it off worked like a piece of cake for me

      Not really familiar with the Chrysler Town Car I have worked on a couple of them before in the past but it's been years. I would think you would gain access to the harmonic balancer by removing the front passenger tire and gaining access through the wheel well.

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  Před 4 lety

      There was one other person 5 months ago had the same problem. He said he was going to try a slide hammer to pull it out I don't know what the outcome was. I would also think perhaps you could attach a vice grip to the end of the extension give it a quick twist one way or the other and it should break free. This should not damage any threads due to the fact that the extension is smaller in diameter.

      @@martinbuilt Wow, thank you so much for replying! I tried putting the ratchet on to the extension that is stuck and turning it but the whole inner circle spins as I try to turn it. I also tried grabbing the extension with vice grips and hammering it forward to try to get the extension loose but unfortunately there's barely any room for me to swing the hammer. I might have a little more room if I can figure out how to remove my clutch fan. I don't really know what else to do.

      @@HerbalTurtle420 went out to the shop and tried a few different extensions and there was one that had very Square edges on it that would catch at the bottom of the hole as I rotated it, I'm assuming that's what kind of extension you have. The Camshaft bolts get torqued to 90 or 95' pounds and they're like half the diameter of the crankshaft bolt you should have no problem going to 130
      If it really scares you I'm sure if you got it up to 105 it's not going to go anywhere.

      @@martinbuilt I had the same problem, put a 3/8" extension in that got stuck. I tried locking pliers to no avail. If I had a crow bar with a just-wide-enough fork I bet I could have extracted it easily. I ended up slipping a wrench (9/16") just behind the head of the extension and tapped the wrench with a hammer. Use the wrench like a lever. when I got more space behind the head, I switched to a 1/2" wrench. Close call!. Thanks for the videos, Martin, I've been using them a lot.
