It was a beautifully designed aircaft, however, I've only had a chance to fly in the old DC-10 and that was a thrill. It was on a Northwest Airlines flight to Minneapolis-St. Paul from Boston back in 1990.
Awesome video, thank you for sharing. I just flew back home on KLM from Spain via Schipol, on Dec. 22, 2013. While taxing I saw 2 KLM MD11s. I love trijets, it's a Shame how all the airlines got rid of them.
I agree. Flew with KLM many times. Never got on the MD-11.

I had the chance to fly with the MD-11 from AMS to PTY and return, back in 2008, for the first time and last. Was great experience, especially when the passenger next to me, who was a partner of a KLM staff worker asked me politely if i can replace my seat with his partner in the business class so they could seat together.... So i ended up flying business for 11;30 hours on my way to Panama :-) I t was amazing to see the beautiful aircraft - the bigest one in Tucumen airport.
I experienced the MD11 with Varig in the Early 2000's even though I prefered the Varig 777-200 ER THE MD11 was nice.
Despite being fully critisized the MD11 has it unique security system called PCA (propulsion controlled aircraft) that makes the MD11 fly without any actions from the pilots reducing or either decreasing engines thrust only in case of hydraulics loss.

That humming at 14:14 was some kind of an hydraulic system shutting off or something?

Each engine has 280kN of Thrust, the MD11 has three of them... This means about 840kN of thrust, a lot of power!

I spoke with the captain after landing and he said it would stay in the fleet for another 2 years. So i guess i will be gone some where around 2014-2015.

Very nice video probably the last video of the klm md-11 on youtube because klm scrappet of the md-11's. When I was in the bus i saw the PH-KCG flying without KLM logos. Later that day i took a look at flightradar24 it was his last flight to the airplane graveyard Victorville Southern california :( :( !

Also this beautiful bird is now at Victorville and will be scrapped. At the end of Oct 2014 they all be phased out by KLM.

Jag önskar att jag får flyga detta fina plan någon gång, tur att jag är ung och har många resor framför mig och att KLM inte tar bort det från deras flotta
Why did many airlines retire the MD-11 so early in its' age?
I think 2015 is the last year
The relatively small wing of MD11 limits its capability. For a long range aircraft, the wing is small in both span and area. No wonder it underperforms. MDC shoulda gone for a whole new wing when developing the MD11 instead of just using a warmed over DC10 wing.

By today's standard, the MD11's wings are quite small. Little wonder why the aircraft never fulfilled its promises.

I don't really understand aviation... why are Airbus A320 from 1989, 737s from 1980s or older still allowed to fly and this mighty bird from 1990 will soon be phased out of pax service... Even the DC 3 is still allowed to carry passengers and this ULTRA-MODERN aircraft won't be anymore...
