the L-1011, the DC-10, the B727 and now the MD-11....all classic Trijets are now history - we will miss ALL of them!!!
FANTASTIC VIDEO as always and I'm so proud to flew in the past with all this fantastic Jets, unfortunately only one leg with Delta's MD-11 CVG-FRA in 1996 but it was awesome.
I will like to remember back to all this fantastic moments with all of you!!!

Absoultly breathtaking. I have no words for this. After climbing out of the thick cloud and seeing that sea. I was sold, but I was pretty much in tears seeing this bird head on its final flight. Please never stop doing these videos.

Still, MD-11F is operated by FedEx,Martin Air, Lufthansa Cargo.... it is lucky that we can still see this plane in cargo version.
Damn! I lived most of my live near Helsinki, from which one of the final operators of MD11, finnair, flew. I was able to go to Birmingham to fly the DC10, but was flying else where when this gig was announced. I guess I now gotta go and earn an ATPL, some 5000 hrs of experience, and then go fly for UPS who probably will still fly MD11 for the next 10 years. damn. At least I've flown a trijet.
I love the wings and flight surfaces. They look so tough and durable. A pity not one was donated for preservation.

That was a truly awesome video! Thanks for sharing this. Sad to see such an incredible plane disappear from passenger service, however it still soldiers on as a freighter with a number of airlines including KLM, Lufthansa and Martinair.

I think there's something poetic about having all that paparazzi during the taxi and takeoff, i'm sure there were tons of people in those parking lots snapping pictures, but then once you ascend above the clouds, it's just you and the plane. A historic flight that nobody else in the world is experiencing except for the people onboard in that moment. It's really intimate.

Beautiful. But is it coincidence that the name of the captain on this last MD-11 flight from Amsterdam is Ooievaar (as mentioned by the senior purser)? 'Ooievaar' is the dutch word for 'stork'.

Because it is a relatively expensive aircraft with it's three engines. We are now capable of flying over the ocean 2 engines. That is why they replace the MD-11 with the 787.

Timpaaa2 Yep. And even in its heyday the MD-11 was a big disappointment that failed to deliver the fuel efficiency promised by MD's marketing guys.This may well be what killed the company.
Planes boarded through one of the rear service doors through jetways that extend over the wing? I have never seen that before. That is really odd.

why is it the last. this plane model is only 28 years old. the DC-10 is older at 48 since it first flew on 8/20/1970

2 engines are more economical, and safer and more powerful. glorified dc10 it needed to go away… look at how much runway that thing chewed up before rotation thats why it went away. super critical and laminar flow wings take 1/8th the space.

It went back to Amsterdam then was sent to Mojave Airport via Los Angeles for scrapping. :(
Why it is the last flight MD-11 KLM?
According to AW (Airways Mag) is was the coast of maintenance of spare parts that was so costly. KLM had planed to retire the 744 (747-4) first but it made better since to retire the more costly aircraft first. Not to mention even international carriers like KLM, Delta, American, Midland and many others are heavily favoring twins over quads (not to mention tris)

Yes I am fully aware of that. This guy so-called 'Mark Aviation" is claiming the title is misleading *When it's not*. This in fact was the Final KLM Passenger flight out of AMS.
The title does not say "Last MD-11 Passenger Flight out of AMS" it says "KLM MD-11 Last Departure from Amsterdam Schiphol on Final Outbound!". Key Words right there... "KLM MD-11 Last Departure" That proves my point. No wear in the title does it say "Last MD-11 Passenger Flight out of AMS".

why it go out of service
It was a very old aircraft, and since KLM was the last one to operate it commercially, it was incredibly expensive to maintain and operate.
