31:40 Forgive the unscripted rambling here... But I neglected to say I think we need to be better about elevating LGBTQIA+ voices. I am part of this community, but I don't feel like I'm the advocate or the representation my community deserves. I also said "maybe non-binary and transgender people"s voices should be elevated -- take out the "maybe" -- we ABSOLUTELY should be elevating their voices. I'm just unscripted and not very good at talking in this setting... please forgive me for these misspeaks.

Tom ... Tom ... Tom. You are an amazing content creator, and you bring so much to your channel, which is unique from most others. I love your playthroughs ... couldn't have gotten through 7th Continent without you (and there are a lot a videos for that game, but yours is the best). You are a great teacher ... others not so much. You are very careful with editing, especially supplying corrections and interesting comments. You are humble ... others are pretty full of themselves. Also, you haven't added a bunch of new people with you on your channel, which clog up the channel with inferior content and boring hosts. I have only recently found your channel, but yours is now at the top of my list. Your well-being comes first, but after that know that your channel is one of the best, if not THE BEST, out there, and all of us would love to see you continue your excellent presentations of game content. Love you so much! :)

Hey Tom. Dylann here. I just wanted to drop you a message to tell you that no mental health struggle you're facing is ridiculous, weird or stupid. You should be immensely proud of yourself for taking steps to better your mental health, identify triggers and actively work on improving things in your life. I don't know you personally, but even just from watching this video, I just wanted to tell you how proud I am of you for being able to do those things or take steps to implement changes in your life. It can be really difficult and you're doing it. I hope you're proud of yourself for that.
Continue to be gentle with yourself and the expectations you place on yourself. Your health and well-being are #1 above all else, even the channel, and when and if it is going to bring you joy, peace and happiness, that's when you should jump back into it. And when/if you choose to, you'll have new fans here at All You Can Board watching.
I also just wanted to say that when I was struggling with some things in my personal life or in the world in general, I dove head first into Marvel Champions and it brought me a lot of happiness and helped immensely. So you're definitely not alone there and I'm so happy you found it if it's something that will be bringing you any kind of similar joy.
I'm sending lots of positivity your way and you'll be in my thoughts. I hope you continue to feel better as you work through things and once again, I can't overstate how incredible and important it is that you recognized and prioritized your mental health. Be well, stay safe and I'm wishing you all the luck in the world.
    -Dylann

Thanks Dylan, that means a lot to me. Literally, one of the things my therapist is trying to help me with is "You have to be more kind to yourself." I'm absolutely my own harshest critic... even when it comes to talking about my mental health.
And I'm so glad to have a fellow Marvel Champions friend to talk to! I'm literally going to respond to comments, take a shower, and go pick up my Vision and Valkyrie packs that just arrived at my FLGS..... so excited! Since I'm new to the game... when YOU get a new Hero, do you build a deck and just put them up against Rhino to see how they play? Or how do you approach it? So far I've only played with Spiderman, Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Panther... so I have lots of people to try out...

Tom, my intro to the hobby was Gloomhaven…your videos were one of the first board game videos I watched. Since then I look forward to many of your playthroughs and I always appreciate your candor, humor and lightheartedness. My reaction whenever I watch your videos is, “ man, this guy seems like such a fun person to play games with!”. Anyway, thank you for honesty and in sharing your life, not just in this video, but in your many other videos as well. Take care and hope you are well my gaming brother.

Thanks for the video. Don’t downplay your own struggles because others have it worse. Someone always has it better and someone always has it worse. Neither should negate your experience.
IF I ever get to SaltCon again, sadly not this year again, but if I do, you’re welcome to wander around with me and play games. Walking the hall looking for a game to jump into is SO INTIMIDATING! I have a few people I look for now but when I don’t see them I just gotta get out of there and take some deep breaths.

Hey Mike! Thanks a bunch for this comment. That's a great point that the comparison stuff just isn't really that helpful. It starts as a "I want to be sensitive to other people struggling" to thoughts that become negative to myself. So it's good to keep in check.
And yeah, I thought about this year's SaltCon for about 30 seconds, then decided this year wasn't going to be the year. Both for the reasons I described, AND because of everything else...
It was really great meeting you a couple of years ago. I still take your copy of The Game with me anytime I travel and visit people. It's such a great game and I love that artwork....

Thank you so much for this. I think one issue I've always had (as someone who, for example, really struggled making a lot of friends in school) is that I always feel like I'm standing on the outside looking in. So, sometimes I see other content creators making great and fun and valuable connections, and it kind of brings me back to those feelings. Now, to be fair to them, I am not someone who has reached out much to help myself form those connections, but that's just how it's always been. I'm shy, and that's how shy people function, yea know?
But I appreciate this comment and the perspective it's giving me that "the community" isn't just the ultra-visible representatives (who I really love). "Community," by definition, includes EVERYBODY. Smaller content creators, commenters, viewers, people who never participate in digital stuff but just like to play... So finding and embracing your own spot in the community is very valuable. Thanks again!

That was literally one of my goals as I started my channel. There are other creators that I LOVE who are so great at teaching, but so often I didn't feel any connection with them, because their videos are very to-the-point and didn't feel warm enough to feel like I knew anything about them. I wanted to make a channel that could help people feel like they were sitting there with me learning the game the way I would teach it in person.... so reading this feels awesome.
Thanks for your comment, and I hope to be back at it when I'm at my best. Stay warm up there!

Very glad to see you back, and safe, and healthy. I definitely missed the presence of your videos. I struggle with a lot of the same loneliness issues that you talked about, and this pandemic has been so hard to deal with. I keep hoping that we're at the end, and I can go out into the world again, and then another wave appears. And not having anyone to play with has meant that I haven't played a game in over a year because I just can't do it alone any more - I just don't have the energy. Good luck, and keep going - and I'll keep watching.

    • @TomTeachesGames
      @TomTeachesGames  Před 2 lety +1

You nailed it. For some of us, loneliness was already very problematic... once the pandemic hit, that was a pretty crappy way to pour salt on the wound.... And you nailed it! I got vaccinated and was so excited to get back to normal! .... then we couldn't.... And not-playing-alone is a seriously relatable feeling. I mean, I couldn't even look at a game without feeling triggered for 6 months... it was like, I had to dip my toe in the water slowly as I looked for games that made me happy to play alone. For me that meant games that were very-much-designed with solo players in mind. Which I think is reflected in the games that I've been enjoying. If you find any game like that (that brings you joy playing solo) make sure you share it with me!

I just want to say thanks for the videos that you have done many of them really helped me understand a lot of what I was confused about! I also can really relate to you and would go to conventions to myself to be around like minded people . I am very introverted an am a people watcher so meeting others is really hard for me because of the voice inside your head that is you,and especially when it comes to board gaming it can be hard. What has help me in terms of just being close to people is being around online communities while it isn't the same as physical I still get the satisfaction and just being able to talk to others help.I also felt the same but for video games where just playing them made me not want to but it's good you are working on it and hope to see your videos again when you are ready! @TomTeachesGames  Před 2 lety

Thanks Billy! Especially at the beginning of the pandemic, I really tried to get online and play games that way -- but I just never got it to click with me. I think one reason is that the thing I love MOST about the board game hobby is the ability to sit around a table with friends and family, step back from the phones, step away from talking about the (important) more-serious parts of life that's happening right now, and to just have fun being with people I care about. The puzzles of games adds to the fun for me, because I like engaging my brain that way.... Also, I don't know why my brain needs that tactile stuff so much so much... it's just weird. I cannot figure out why my brain can't just embrace playing online! It's just so weird.
ANYWAY, the Sleeping Gods intimidation is REAL. It is just so big and sprawling for a "solo" game. We might be similar in that respect. I 100% agree that (assuming I have a hero deck built) the ability to just grab a hero, setup a villain, and just go for it.... there is something that is so great about that that keeps me coming back for more, night after night.
I'm on my way to go pick up my Vision and Valkyrie packs... and I'm so dang excited....

Great to hear that you're still alive and (relatively) well. Sucks that you've been through what you have, but good to know you're doing better. If it's a choice between your health (mental or otherwise) and producing more videos, it's not even a choice (though, obviously, if it's possible, having both would be ideal from my perspective).
Something I know I tend to struggle with is the trap of thinking that I'm bound to my own precedents - that if I do a certain amount for a specific project, I have to repeat at least that much for all future similar projects. Reframing it, not as a commitment to play the game, learn the rules, film a video, edit and annotate the video, engage with comments, update with corrections, design an insert, build the insert, photograph the insert, film a build video for the insert, upload the video, upload the photos and blueprint, and update the website; but rather as a commitment to play the game, and if you want to film a teach, that's a bonus, and a separate, optional commitment, and if you decide to make your own additional storage, that's a bonus, and sharing that storage is then another bonus option, and so on. The main person expecting you to do everything is yourself, and recognising that you're the person inventing the rules you feel trapped by and that you can change them can be a huge step.
It can also be worth considering whether, once you've decided you do want to do a thing, there are ways you could make it easier to do - for example, buying a second camera (and tripod) would save a fair bit of time from the recording process since you could leave one camera on a commonly used shot, and only move the second camera around. Of course, there's an upfront investment there, which may outweigh the benefits - and combining footage from two cameras is going to add complexity to the editing process - but it's worth thinking about where the friction points are, and what can be done about them to make it easier to enjoy doing what you want to do.
Anyway, obviously I hope you do produce more videos, but only if you're enjoying it. I actually checked just yesterday to make sure CZcams hadn't failed to report new videos, so, even if I didn't, in the end, reach out, know that I was still thinking about you.

Hey rmsgrey! It's great to hear from you. You always offer such great perspectives on things. You nailed (in your second paragraph) what my brain does. I have a terrible time filtering the work I assign myself... and, to be fair, it was all stuff I enjoyed doing -- but it absolutely became overwhelming. I nee to be better at filtering and pulling back, and not trying to do every single thing that pops into my head.
I actually spent the last month looking around at options for another camera. I currently use my old iPhone 6..... Originally I didn't want to make any financial investment because I didn't know if I'd actually stick with making content. Knowing I was able to keep with it for a few years, I figured I could... what got little tricky was, by the time I found a camera that I thought would be good for me, it was pretty much at the top of the budget I set for myself... and that was JUST for the camera. As soon as I started looking at the cost of a battery (that lasts longer than 30 minutes) and a memory card, and a tripod (my current one wouldn't work with the camera I was looking at) I was way over-budget, and I didn't think that would work for me. So, it's something I'm looking at, but haven't quite figured out the best way for me to do that yet.
Thanks again for your perspective, and for thinking of me! That stuff does matter.

It reminds me.... there is this early episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Season 1, Episode 11, "Out of Sight, Out of Mind") where a girl literally becomes invisible because people just never saw her. It's easy to feel like that online.... but knowing people are thinking about you means so much. Thank you for this comment :D

Hi Tom! I was on your channel a few days ago looking to see if you had a video for Glass Road that I had just picked up. You do bring something special to the hobby which is why I came here first! You are absolutely right in that I'd love to see other voices elevated in all the groups you mentioned. The great part is your voice can be a part of that too when you're ready once again. I echo other sentiments in that we care more about you being healthy than content. I love that your therapist suggested doing this. What a great idea! I love even more that you did it. It can be hard to be vulnerable and open up especially about mental health. For some reason saying, "I got diabetes" (physical problems) is easier to say than "I have depression". As an introvert and someone who has struggled with depression, I can say I've been there and know how hard it can be. So I celebrate with you doing the hard inner work that you're doing. It's worth it because you're worth it. Take the time you need. We'll be here.

    • @TomTeachesGames
      @TomTeachesGames  Před 2 lety

I never did get Glass Road... did you get it played? And how did you like it?
I reported that I finally made "the video" to my therapist last night, and she was very proud of me. It was definitely a big boost. It's almost like I pay her to help me get better, she tells me to do things, I do them, and it can have positive results..... weird how that all happens! 😂
And you're ABSOLUTELY right. Its like... with physical issues, they're all visibly verifiable. Like, not just a broken arm, but diabetes has ways to check how your blood sugar is, and when things aren't balanced you can see the negative effects of it.... but seeing mental illness is so much harder, and it's so hard to verify what people are feeling... so you have to just listen. And a lot of the times, the listening isn't a literal hearing... it's observations from people who know you best and recognize what is and isn't "normal" behavior for you.... it's just such a tough thing to follow.
Thanks for celebrating with me! It seems I'm on the right track, I just have to keep moving that way to prevent from slipping backwards....

Thanks Jack, it's so nice to hear from you, and you bring up a good point. I mean, I'm never scripted... but it could be worth considering casual "what I'm playing" or "what I'm enjoying" or "what games I want" videos. Those could be a way to ease back towards the more labor-intensive stuff.
I had the Lord of the Rings LCG.... And I was never ever able to beat the first scenario(?).... I tried dozens of times... and got so frustrated I never came back to it, and eventually sold it. I only had the base game... so that wasn't too strong of an investment... but I really wanted to like it more. Not only did it feel too difficult for me (this was when it was new) but I also found it to be too complicated and fiddly... It has been quite the teaching ride! Like, for ANY teacher, the first few years are ultra-stressful, just because it's all so new and you're learning so much. I finally felt like I was in a pretty great place (in terms of stress) from around 2016 - 2020.... then, you know, 2020 hit.... and it has felt like I'm back to year one. BUT, even that is getting better with time. This is our "refine what we built last year" year, and then, in theory, next year I'll feel like I'm back to normal.
And I love your idea of collaborating more with ANYONE, but especially people from other demographics. I say I want to "elevate" -- that's a verb... so I could really find some way to do that. And even though it's been two years since our jobs were "normal" -- I have faith that we'll be back to normal, um.... sometime. Or, so they say....
Good luck with the rest of the year! We're more than half-way through...

Hey Tom, it is good to see you! Daran here. I'm sorry I didn't reach out to you during your absence. I have this thing about giving people space. I want to thank you for your advice about recording videos - I asked you about it and you had real feedback and excellent tips. I ended up not really doing much with the video, but thank you nonetheless. What you're saying rings so true to certain aspects of what's up with me, as well, I hope you don't mind but I can't help but hear the echoes. I'm working on ADHD treatment now, and it impacts a lot of different things I have going on. Anyway, your tale about your channel really reminded me being unable to do my family blog for 8 years. It got to a sad part of my life and I just couldn't make myself focus on it. Anyway, 2021 has been rough, that's for sure. You're brave for making this video- - keep fighting the good fight - and thanks for making this and all your videos. (PS - I loved the credit card 4 dollar minimum story.)
If you're still struggling with what you bring to this hobby, I'd say a heart. It's also just going to be good because is is you. That's been the most fun about your channel since you started - I loved that you made mistakes and didn't take them out. It is actually better than "perfect" videos because we see common pitfalls - and what a human sounds like when playing a game.
Please don't feel pressure to start again or to stop for that matter - just know you too are not alone. Do what's right for your health - be that either way. (Or maybe showing up in seasons?)

      Hey Daran!
Uh, you don't have to be even a little sorry about giving me space. I love my space.... and during this time, I've also needed my space. You've been one of the greatest people to talk to since I started recording, and you're a great friend.
And hey, I think I maybe have even said this to you when we talked about you making videos before: the only way to know if its "for you" is to try... I'm glad you started taking steps and figured out what was and wasn't working for you.
Isn't crazy how, (thinking about the family blog) something like that can kind of sit there in the back of your mind.... and, while the outside observer might say, "Dude, it would only take you x-amount of time to just get this thing done...." but I totally understand that blockade that happens... that bizarre phenomenon where you can let something sit in the back of your mind, kind of haunting you, for YEARS... and you know you could "just do it" -- but you also can't. It's a real thing. And it's weird, and I can't explain it... but it happens to me a lot. So I can absolutely understand that.
Thanks again for helping me think about my possible contributions. That is a great point -- sometimes I need a reminder that "me" IS something unique. You're a great friend and I appreciate your comment. Keep in touch!

@@TomTeachesGames I also consider you a great friend and it has been fun to see what you come up with over the years!
I know I'm just agreeing with you agreeing with me in a way, but that paragraph there about having something haunt you for years is so dead-on perfect. That is almost exactly how it went down. I've been looking for the words to explain to people and cannot come up with them. I might hit you up on some kind of direct message thing to say just a little more - but nothing I want on display in YT comment section, lol.
I will definitely keep in touch. Heck I wish I lived closer, I could use a friend in my vicinity that likes playing board games and is going through some similar stuff! Take care!

Tom I've watched your playthru's for a long time now. Always great content, and I know shooting all that yourself is SOOO much work. Just wanted to mention that there's an incredible community on Steam with Tabletop Simulator, if you have the computer to handle it. I'm sure you've heard of it, and I've used it SOO much to play various board games with folks remotely(some of my favorite Gloomhaven games have happened there). And of course, you're always free to hit me up. Always up for setting up a session of play and chatting with new people. Nice thing is...NO mess or cleanup! :)

Thank you so much for that! Right when we all went into lockdown, I signed up for TTS and really gave it a try.... and no matter how hard I tried to play with m best friend (who is also on TTS) I could never get the controls figured out.... I'm so terrible at digital gaming 🤣 and it makes me feel like I'm 75 years old. At the most, I've been pretty good at being able to play iPad board games.... but even then, sometimes I struggle. Why are physical components so dang easy to use!
But your'e absolutely right, the quick setup and clean up was insanely nice. I really probably should get back on there and try again... see if I can conquer this digital-weakness...

@@TomTeachesGames I certainly can understand the control woes with TTS...my suggestion is to run through the included tutorial a few times, use an actual mouse (very hard to do on a touchpad or whatever that little knob is that they put on laptops in the middle of the keyboard) and play some simple card-based games on it first (Dominion, Uno, whatever!). Again, I'm always willing to help, teach, or play!

Just so you know, I watch your channel because I share your love of board games and your content is some of the highest quality on CZcams. You are a good teacher and seem to be a kind person. The color of your skin and/or your gender never occurred to me. God bless.

    • @TomTeachesGames
      @TomTeachesGames  Před 2 lety +1

Dang Daniel, thank you so much. You're really kind and I appreciate your compliments.
I just wanted to add that I think you and I are SUPER lucky in the sense that we really don't see skin color or gender the way other people do because it is so normal for us to see ourselves everywhere we look. Like, almost all of the content I consume is from people who look like me, so I don't really think about it.
I wanted to offer a perspective that might be worth considering, and I hope that's okay.... I lived 30 years of my life really trying to hide my sexuality. I've known I was gay since I was super young... but I also didn't want to be... so I just hid it as best as I could. Growing up, I hardly ever saw any gay characters on TV or in Movies. They may have been out there, but I wasn't exposed to them... And, again, I didn't really think anything of it, because that was my personal normal. Once they started to appear in the media, I was able to start seeing MYSELF as someone who might not be evil or broken or whatever.... So, there was that. Then, around 10 years ago, board game media was starting to get more and more popular. And, again, it felt absolutely normal to see "myself" (white men) talking about board games. I never even thought twice about it -- because it was so comfortable. Then, one day, I randomly came across @GeekyGaymerGuy 's channel. And, I know this sounds crazy.... but I literally thought that there weren't other gay people who played games. I just thought they were.... I don't even know.... I think I thought they were always out clubbing or something. But Theo literally flicked a switch in my brain where I realized, "Holy cow, there are other people LIKE ME who play games" -- and the feeling was seriously intense and amazing. I had no clue how much I needed to see someone like me (obviously I'm talking about my sexuality, not my skin or gender here, because that was already being represented) talking about board games.
Anyway, all of this is to say that I absolutely get it. It is really easy to never think about the skin color or gender of the people you are watching when they match your own so frequently. BUT, that makes it even more important to listen to people for whom those things DO matter. It wasn't until I had my own personal "Oh my gosh" moment that I really started to understand what "Representation Matters" means... So, as much as things like that are flying under our radar, I know they matter to other people, and it has become important to me to elevate diverse people, so that other people who don't look like me can have that euphoric moment, and feel welcome and included at the table.
Anyway, I'm sorry that comment was much longer than intended. Thank you again for your kindness towards me as I am obviously feeling lots of feelings. I hope to be back to my normal as soon as possible!

It has certainly been a fascinating time to be teaching.... I really think that what will need to happen is a re-defining of our job description, AND us teachers setting boundaries for ourselves. As it is, right now, it feels like everyone has piled responsibilities on US that should (or could) be designated to other people. I think it happened because we do love the kids, and we want them to be happy and healthy and successful. Sadly, when we are trying to be everything for these kids, they are going to suffer. If we can share these responsibilities with other people, I think that will only help the kids. So, for myself, I've had to set some boundaries for what I am and am not willing to do as a teacher, and I've been working to make sure that qualified people can kind of step into those roles that I'm setting aside.... if that makes sense at all...
