  • Tom teaches how to play Oath: Chronicles of Empire and Exile. He begins by teaching the rules of the game, then goes through the first round (as scripted in the rulebook), and then continues through the entire game.

    At 1:36:57 you don't stop drawing from a discard pile when you reach a vision. You only stop when drawing a vision from the world deck.

      Thank you so much! I had even paused the recording to look up this exact rule. It took forever to find the answer.... and I literally MISREAD the answer! To be fair to myself.... my brain was on total overload. So I really appreciate this comment. I'll heart it so it ends up at the top until I eventually get things annotated.

    We are learning a lot from this video. The order of reference used here is way easier to follow. We appreciate the effort. We, too, were still confused after following the scripted setup and walk-through provided by the game. It wasn’t bad, just a ton deep mechanics.
    Cheers!

      I couldn't be happier that you found it useful. I was SUPER nervous to make it, and really intimidated by everything.... but you're exactly right. It's all do-able, but introducing so many brand new ideas through a script just didn't work as nicely for me as it has for other people. I'm glad I could help.

      Thanks Conner! I know that long videos aren't exactly everyone's flavor... but I'm glad there are some people who find it helpful. I'm sorry for the extreme delay here... I've had to step back for some time, but I'm really thankful for your kind comment.

    Really appreciate the effort on this. Going to teach it for the first time tonight and had done the same multiple readings of the rule books and watching of other videos as you mentioned. This really solidified things. Thank you!

    I like the way you talk about your options for the various players, it makes it clear the agony of choice you would go through when playing this game, though saying this I can't wait to get it to the table.

    The game strikes me as having taken a number of ideas from Rob Daviau's Legacy format, without taking the full campaign idea (nor actually destroying components).
    Something I noticed in the rulebooks that might help with gameplay is that the game comes with bandit warbands that can be used to mark un-ruled sites.
    Uncaught errors I noticed on the way through:
    1:29:44 "we need 3 to win" - bandits have 1 rolled shield plus 2 locations so the requirement for victory was actually 4.
    1:31:43 "we can't put it on an empty one" exactly the reverse: if there is an empty one, that's where you must put it (done correctly whenever it comes up later)
    1:36:59 Visions only stop drawing from the World Deck, not from discard piles (comes up multiple times)
    1:41:00 If no-one holds the Banner of the Darkest Secret, you can recover it regardless of what cards are at your site. You can also "recover" it from yourself to add more secrets to it. This had a significant impact on blue's turn, with knock-on effects for the rest of the game.
    2:28:06 Because red's pawn is in the mountains, the warbands on their board also apply, making a total of 7 defense, and making the timing on purple's relic critical to the outcome (purple would have to sacrifice both remaining warbands to win, so the relic spawning more would be needed in order to rule the site). Also, red should lose one warband from their board, so purple should gain another.
    2:30:08 Warning Signals should have been discarded at the end of the combat (assuming the bandits didn't activate it earlier) - which comes up repeatedly for the rest of the game.
    2:33:42 Forgot the Wake effect on the Banner of the People's Favor.
    3:52:27 Purple should get 3 extra warbands from their combat relic here.
    3:17:53 Because you're attacking the site blue's pawn occupies, their 2 warbands should also get involved (not that it mattered given their roll).

      As always, thank you for this. I'll get this annotated ASAP. I've been doing a bunch of non-game related stuff recently.... it's kind of sucked up my time.... You're great! And considering the scope of this game... I think this number of errors is worth celebrating. 😂😂😂

    When you play a Discord denizen to the Wastes, the Wastes' ability lets you recover the relic without having to spend Supply. You still have to burn two secrets to actually get the relic.

    Round 5 - Chancellor would have gained 3 Warbands (from the Cursed Cauldron Relic) after defeating red on the Salt Flats.

  • @Grunden
    @Grunden Před 2 lety +1

    On turn 4, purple against Red campaign, you forgot to add the 2 red warbands on the the red players board. If the enemy pawn is on the site under attack, the warbands on the player's board also defend. You didn't have enough to defeat that, so technically Red won on turn 4.

    Round 2 Blue player when you are discussing recovering the Darkest Secret it says in brackets (You can recover it from yourself or the shared bank freely.)
    Does this not imply that you do not need to follow the criteria listed above "Players can only recover this from you if there is a card at your site whose suit does not match any of your advisors." in order to recover it the first time from the general supply?

    Round 5 you forgot to give yourself a coin from the animal bank when you played the rangers card. Unless I missed something. Wonderful video a lot to keep track of with one player let alone 3.

      I think you're right, but then there were only two coins left in the Beast bank, so even if he had drawn when playing to the site, he would still only have been able to take one favour for the Trade he took on that card that round, so it's the same result of two tokens.

      No!! I tried to make sense of the solo rules and it’s convoluted solo-player flow chart, but WOW is it overwhelming. Absolutely cannot find the “muster” to figure it out. I’d rather try and learn calculus!

    Complicated?.. ya got that right. I passed on it. Whys the chrome so elaborate? The naming/labels of game pieces/themed parts/rules are obscure. War bands&Relics label make sense. After that..It's 'WTH' does this represent?! Just grab some nonsensical noun/pronoun. PC proofing. ...gezzz!

    • @TomTeachesGames
      @TomTeachesGames  Před 3 lety

      I can totally agree with you here. It's much more complicated than my "fun" level. Like, my taste is that games can be explained in 5-10 minutes, and you don't spend your entire time with your nose in the rulebook. I did get into a groove by the 3rd or 4th round... but that was like 2 hours in. Many people don't have that kind of patience for learning a new game.

    • @rmsgrey
      @rmsgrey Před 3 lety +1

      There are a couple of trade-offs when it comes to naming. On a mechanical level, using standard labels for things that only approximately match those labels' usual meanings means things appear more readable, but mostly just makes it easier to not notice that you are confused when this game does something differently. On a thematic level, having setting-specific vocabulary helps with world-building and a separation from the everyday and from other settings, right up to the point where the words lose all meaning and just become noise...
      How much is "too much" for things like this is going to vary from person to person, and with context - it's a lot different having to learn an entirely new vocabulary for each of the 3-4 new games you're playing at a monthly game night and possibly not playing again than it is to immerse yourself in the one new game you're getting for the next 6 months which you're going to play dozens of times before picking up something new or returning to something old.
