- I cover the new kit that is out by Traxxas and compare it with other options that have been available for years (RPM and Tekno options). The Traxxas kit does offer the larger bearings. Just keep in mind the purpose of the original vehicle before spending too much money. You may be better off saving up to get a Maxx instead and have two behicles for different purposes.

I'd like to offer a dfferent perspective and why I say think it's worth it if you're starting with a stock truck. The driveshafts that come with this are like the ones on the Maxx which are much thicker than the stock ones. I spent $160 for the just the steel splined driveshafts alone, which are great, but I think these new plastic ones will be very durable option. Now, for $40 less than the steel splined driveshafts you get the addition of heavier duty caster and steering blocks, rear hubs, and the bearings are actually larger bearings than the stock ones. I've replaced all of these parts multiple times which is probably another $50-$60 worth of parts, including the RPM ones, but I've had issues with the screws backing out of the RPM ones so I went back to stock. These look like they are much thicker and more stable, so now you're looking at $100 savings overall by comparison. Also, the Traxxas website said something about the shock towers are to accomidate for the placement of the thicker driveshafts so I'm not sure if they will fit without these new towers unfortunately. If I were starting with a new truck, I'd rather buy this kit vs other aftermarket parts.
I'll also add that I had a Maxx, and I didn't like it as much because it felt too heavy for the size of the truck. It felt like driving a bowling ball around haha, but that's just personal prefrence. The Rustler 4x4 and Hoss are much lighter overall and with the right upgrades, can be comparibly durable like the Maxx because of the fact that they are lighter.
I just bought a traxxas hoss should I buy the 9052x and 9051x cvds from traxxas or the tekno ones
Yeah this don't know what he's even talking about
I do not have the part number for a previous Traxxas spline shafts, but those were better. Sometimes these fall apart similar to the MIP ones. I am a Tekno fan. I have not had a major use with my MT410. So I would steer you that direction. Then again... Traxxas would probably be the one to go with just because they tend to produce parts for a very long time relative to others.
Yeah I agree with this man, I bought the kit and I have loved it!
I got tired of breaking exactly these parts on both my rustler and my hoss.. its been a really great kit so far.. the axle shafts are exactly the same diameter as the maxx 4s.. lots of beef just like both the front and rear hubs and knuckles.. and for only a fraction of the cost of aluminum..
This whole kit is an excellent upgrade if you are starting with a stock truck. I am hoping this puts an end to breaking axles in both trucks on 3s.. so far so good after a few weeks of use..
What doesn't work very well are rpm arms with this kit.. my buddy had to grind a lot of material off the rpm arms to get the hubs on both the front and back. Otherwise they lock right up when you put the hinge pins in..
The cold weather hd traxxas arms are a perfect fit though.. no clearance issues anywhere and everything went together as it should..
Since you mention the cold weather arms, I actually perfer those over the RPM. They look great, fit great... and all... I'll say most RPM arms I have used need some form of "fitting" so they move freelly. Any thoughts?
@@telecomandorc my buddy had a tough time getting his rpm arms to work properly with the outer upgrade kit..
My only personal experience was tryingbto get a set of front steering arms on my xmaxx from rpm.. they wanted to bind and they didn't fit well.. that being said, I put the rpm rear hub carriers on my xmaxx and they are absolutely excellent.. I would recommend them in a heartbeat.. its probably the kind of thing where you have to pick and choose what you want to deal with.. almost everyone makes a pretty good product now adays..
I love your intro screen by the way.. made me chuckle..
@@brokenbirf Thanks for the info and the compliment. I will go back and forth with the intro. I need to come up with a new one just to change it up.
And I do agree. Even on Slash trucks, I love the TRX winter arms, but prefer the RPM carrier.
Great video as always... I've learned so much from you
You are welcome.
You suggest in the video that the only parts worth geting are the hubs and knuckles. I don't think it was made very clear that the new HD hubs and knuckles will only work with the new drive shafts because the entire spindle end is different. The bearings are bigger because the spindle diameter is larger. This means the new HD carrier parts can not be used separately from the kit as they are not compatable with stock Traxxas and aftermarket drive shafts. I do see that the new larger spindle has a part number but I do not know if it can be transplanted to other shaft systems. I really like how the rear carrier was widened to encapsulate the outer end of the A arm, a weak point. Larger bearings and spindle are a plus also. I'm not thrilled with the much larger diameter drive shafts, seems like too much mass and size for that location. Another negative, the new shock towers may not be compatible with the use of sway bars. Thank you for the video and sharing your thoughts on this new offering.
On the contrary, thank you for the details. 🤝
@@telecomandorc Turns out thee is a steel spline driveshaft compatable with the 9080 kit. $80 each.
The front knuckle assy and rear carrier assy can be purchased separately for $19 so $179 total.
Extreme heavy duty, steel-spline constant-velocity with 6mm stub axles for use with #9080 upgrade kit
9051R Front 9052R Rear
I was excited about the kit when I first saw it but not so much now. I'd have to give alot of thought to just doing the steel shafts & carriers.for $179. Just can't get past the fat plastic driveshafts.
@@desotosky1372 Those shafts are nice but they do not have the boots to keep the dust out. They look like the MIP which are heavy. But you are right, the fat plastic ones will probably give out after enough use on even 4s.
great video and information
Thank you. 🤝
if ya put hoss in the search bar teckno rc dose have the hoss/rustler big bone center drive shaft on the website incase you couldn't find it.
Thanks for the heads up.
It is a great kit, Traxxas models are tough right out of the box, anyone can say what they want I have almost all Traxxas models and bash them all and they are very durable, things do break doesn't matter if it's Traxxas or Tekno, parts will break...most all hobby grade models are very good, it just depends on if you can get parts for some brands, where I'm at Traxxas and Arrma parts are very plentiful.....and that is a reason I really like Traxxas...
I think you are right about availability. Most shops in these parts probably have a wall dedicated to Traxxas and a wall for everyother brand they carry. I love Tekno, but if I ever break something (extreamly rate) it is an order item. It depends on how people use and abuse these vehicles.
I already have the techno M6 shafts on my slash and stampede. They’re great i don’t have a problem with the shafts, but the plastic is a little on the weak side. They’re strong enough, but if i could fit the ones from the extreme heavy duty kit with the techno shafts i think it’d be on to a winner but i don't know if they fit.
That is a great idea. You are on to something.
They should fit..they made the bearing larger..in the traxxas kit
Just got the kit for my slash proline body mounts don't fit my green hd plastic shock tower sooooo ya
I would have felt the same.
I have a rustler with all tekno the center big bone is tkr6765... the nice thing about the new traxxas stuff uses the same bigger bearings...
Thanks for adding a part number. And very good point about bearings. 😅 I just think at this point a Maxx may be a better option for the overall price. But it is easier to spend $120 on something one already has than $570 on a new rig.
If the oldish cvd run a 5mm bearing and the new is 6 do they have a new bearing for that ?
Unless they changed something recently, they should come with the new size bearings. The bearings are better than stock even if it is 1mm difference. Is it worth it? to each his own I guess.
Rpm hasnt won me over..i think the knuckles are softer and screws strip faster
That's why RPM is "durable" in crashes. The parts are much softer. If you like good handling, the Traxxas winter plastics are probably the best. They are strong and do not flex or warp as much as others.
Have you used this kit? (Sorry if you said this and I missed it) You should get one and give it a beating! I think you would change your opinion, especially about the driveshafts, that are basically shortened Maxx shafts. 👍 Aside from the durability of the shock towers, the design is changed to allow clearance of the larger diameter shafts.
I agree with you that the parts are better than stock. But I just think it is a money pit and a kit such as a Tekno would be a better buy. I like Traxxas just like the next guy... and spent way too much money on upgrades just for kicks. In the end, it did not feel it was worth it. I see it as taking a current Civic and upgrading it to beat a current Corvette. I would say... buy the Civic... save and get a Corvette. But it is cool when someone has money to burn and soups up the Civic. 🤣🤣
What class does norcal hobby race on Saturday and Sundays?
It depends. It alternates between on-road and off road. This weekend it was onroad.
www.norcalhobbies.com/race-classes/
Buggy 2WD 17.5T is the most popular.
@@telecomandorc will i need a buggy and a traxxas slash to race?
@@knightairsoftwarrior Not for rookie. If you run rookie, you can run any electric 2s RC. The other classes are specific. So you will need an RC specific to each of the other classes.
Hi I just purchased a traxxas hoss should I buy the tekno kit or the traxxas 9052x and 9051x cvds
If you only run 2s, I would not invest in them just yet. If you run 3s then I would consider getting them. But before getting the Tekno kit, the upgrade you should really consider is the Traxxas GTR shocks for it. Start with blue springs in the rear and red in the front with 47.5WT in the rear and 40-45WT front. You can udjust from there depending on driving conditions.
@@telecomandorc ty for the reply I just saw it I’m definitely running it on 3s don’t know to go Tekno I heard the lighten cups snap but I was thinking of putting carbon fiber tube roll over them do u know how thick they are or just go with the 9052x and 9951x shafts pls help
@@LuisTorres-tm2jc I do not recall how thick they are, but 9052x should work wonders. Now, I have run the TRA6852X which plastic but have more material. They are strong. And I have run the traxxas metal spline (like the 9052x) and they were virtually indestructible. I used them and abused them and never had an issue. I used the plastics TRA6852X on the Nitro Slash Drag Car I build. I would need to look up the video. And I used the steel spline on a Stamped I build because my nephew blew out the stock plastic ones. The Stampede still has them, although, I gave it to my sister-in-law's husband. So we still run it and I still have access to it. Think can run 3s all day on a HW 3660 3200kv motor and Max10 esc. So, I would go with the metal spline by Traxxas.
@@LuisTorres-tm2jc I found the one with the plastic ones. Minute 3:08 czcams.com/video/8tbeuNq1blM/video.html
I need to find the one with the metal splines.
The hoss ( as I have one) is much more different than the rustler, it has the 540xl motor, no slipper clutch for a lot of tourque, and a little fan on the esc.
The fan 🤣... I do not think I mentioned that on an old video comparing the two. I should have.
@@telecomandorc couldnt think of anything else lol
@@sawyerschack3645 It's the suddle things. Have you upgraded your Hoss shocks to the GTR ones? Those I recommend.
@@telecomandorc It's a basher, dont need such nice things for it
@@sawyerschack3645 No they do not 😆... they will just get beat up. Very right, you are. Although, there is someone out there looking for the next shelf queen RC. I think that is why Tekno does not bother with flashy things.
i had these tekno m6 driveshafts and i really dont like them on my rustler 4X4. 1 driveshaft bent from a little jump and the other one split in half... I also always break the wheel carriers and i break the pin inside of the driveshaft. Also, since i installed these driveshafts my wheels were standing in some weird way, it is litterally slowing my car down... I dont know how it is for the stampede and the slash, but i do know that ill never buy these again for my rustler.
I appreciate your comment. It sounds interesting especially the change in stance. The Rustler and Stampede share arms if I recall. At least the Slash 4x4 and Stampede do.
@@telecomandorc ye i dont understand it either but i just installed the Traxxas heavy duty kit and now it is fine... So ye you should only buy M6 driveshafts for hoss, stampede and slash and not for rustler in my opinion.
@@jorritvermoesen7063 Did you get the heavy duty gray plastic ones or the metal spline ones?
@@telecomandorc plastics because you get some other heavy duty parts with it
Lord that was long winded!!
😅 I'm still catching my breath.
