This Lancia Delta S4 Is A Ballet Of Brutality

  • “It’s a car enthusiast’s collection, right,” says John Campion. “I don’t have cars because I want to impress anybody. If you don’t know what a rally car is, you’re kinda like, ‘That’s a dirty car, there are cracks on it’… But I find the passion I have for these cars goes back to the individuals who drove them.”
    Beginning as a “lucky” immigrant to the U.S. in 1984 with $26 in his pocket, Campion has worked hard for the last few decades and is finally able to indulge in the vehicles most meaningful to him. From a Lotus Cortina similar to the Ford Cortina his father bought new in period to World Rally Championship rally-winning group B cars, his collection is definitely filled with fog lights and Martini stickers.
    “I grew up in Ireland in the late-’60s and early ’70s, and had a fascination with all things mechanical,” he says. “My father was a mechanical kind of guy, and we grew up restoring old tractors and steam engines-so once I started making a few dollars, I started purchasing cars, and went through the wholy myriad of cars and ended up where we are today, which is predominantly cars from my youth-rally cars.”
    He makes no mistakes in recognizing his limitations as a driver, because piloting some of the fastest all-road vehicles ever conceived takes a steel will and full committment- “I drive the car for 15 minutes, and I’m exhausted…” he says to convey how amazing Group B pilots were in period.
    “Group B drivers were the best of the best of the best…” he says. “But it’s still humbling to drive the same car as these rally legends; to be able to show the cars, drive the cars, and get a wider audience for these cars.”
    “If you own them and don’t show them, and you own them and don’t drive them, and own them but don’t share them…it’s a rich man’s folly.”

    That guy has seriously good taste in cars. A Fulvia, an 037, a Delta Integrale, two lovely air cooled 911's, a Giulia Sprint, an early Escort, that Cortina... damn. On top of that, the mighty Delta S4. All that's missing is an Audi S1 and a Peugeot 205 T16, and maybe a Stratos, and I would call that rally car heaven.

      Kind of agree in terms of engineering with the Twincharger and the AWD, but as a Lancia fan, i admit the car was the most UGLY thing ever rallying, awful x1000 million, and it almost didn't look as the stradale S4, which was quite beautiful. honesty the regulations back then were Hillarious, there was nothing from the original omologation shape.

    Lancia Delta S4 was as quick as an F1 car of its time, 1985 they did a rally stage on a racetrack (Brand's Hatch) F1 raced on the same year and the Delta S4 got a time equal to mid field F1 cars, absolutely insane.

    • @theant9821
      @theant9821 Před rokem

      Evidence of this? Sounds quite fanciful to me, 1986 was the most powerful year for the turbo era F1 cars and 85 was 2nd most powerful year, they were far more powerful, far more lightweight and far more downforce.
      (1987 was when 4 bar the boost limit was introduced, 1988 it was changed to 2.5 bar)

    • @posniknelb6114
      @posniknelb6114 Před 8 měsíci

      Never happened I'm afraid, just a myth. No way it could've beat an 80s F1 car in 85 or 86. Even the slowest cars weighed less than 600kg with 700 to 800bhp and tons of downforce. The S4 is incredible in its own right, it might've kept up with an F1 car to 60 mph because of 4 wheel traction, but that's were it would end.

  • @alex91062

  • @sergiogiacomosammartano7623

    I read somewhere that this car could have qualified for the 1986 F1 Portuguese GP in the top 10 (driven by Toivonen). That's how fast it was.
    Thinking that some crazy dude was driving it on DIRT scares the hell out of me!
    But that were the '80s.... surely the craziest (and perhaps the best) decade in motor racing history.

      There's a very good reason why nobody has mentioned Mr. Blomqvist & that is because he was never a Lancia works driver & had absolutely nothing to do with the S4. The only time he ever competed in a Lancia was a privately entered Stratos in the '78 Swedish. He was a Saab stalwart & latterly an Audi development driver who kept Mikkola et al honest, especially in snow. He also drove Ford, Peugeot, Mitsubishi, Skoda & Nissan. What he did not do was drive an S4.

IF (as he says) he loves GpB, how come he doesn't know the names of the legends that drove them? I'd love to own a GpB car, but (forgetting the money for a moment), my driving could never do it justice. The car would need to go to a decent rally driver with the skills to use the car properly. To see this actual car driven in a hillclimb by Peruggini in 2009, on home territory, followed by the present footage just made me weep. The car just NEEDS to come home. Just my own twopence worth!

    Being Irish myself, I know how passionate and knowledgeable we are about rallying, the guy is very cool, really knows his cars and wants to share his passion with others. This particularJolly Club Totip Delta S4 was always my favourite, it was 2nd in the 1986 Rally Sanremo. It’s so good to see the car preserved and more importantly used. It’s still in its tarmac spec because it only raced once in San Remo which is a Tarmac Rally and he obviously wants it to remain as it was when raced!

      you're entirely right, it could have had the contemporary wheels on it as these were AVON slicks. i've heard though certain rally communities are switching over to slick tires on smooth GRAVEL, which goes against everything i've learned about mechanical grip on dirt but whatever, it seems to work on AWD cars quite well!
