They were so close to 1:1 ratio then! Just engine, plastic, tires and a tilt-rack. It took a couple of lives to stop it. They were modern gladiators, and my god they were risking everything during their era. It is a part of my childhood, when I never really understood what they were doing, except that I loved it. It is one beautiful piece of art, and I hope that it never comes back. Only in our memories.

It never should of been banned though few Rule changes would of been better for the sport better safety regs, higher minimum weight like not allowing aluminium rollcages and better fire safety and spectator control is most important. Banning group b killed rallying ther where multiple manufacturers developing cars that never got to see stages and they just gave up on rallying we would of had a bunch of Manufacturers not like now thers 3 🙄

@@PaceWorks dude, banning group b was not only good for safety reasons, but also it started the most remembered era on Rallying, not only Lancia Delta stood there also we got the era of legendary machines such as the Subaru Impreza, Mitsubishi Lancer Evos, Ford Focus, Scorts and Fiestas, Toyota Celica GT4, Corolla WRC,, Peugeot 206 and the glorious Citroens Xsara and C series, plus some others.
If group B should had continued the likes of Ferrari or Porsche would maked the sport very expensive and scared brands like Lancia here, giving us the same problem we have nowadays while continuied risking drivers and spectators lifes.

      They can’t, period.
Lancia Delta S4 was a competition car built around an astonishing idea of a 2000cc engine that was both turbo-charged (high revs) and compressed witha Volumex compressor (low revs) and had a phenomenal mechanic 4x4 with special suspension schemes and full lightweight strip down (most of the outside bodywork was in plastic.
The car was only 810kg with over 800HP and stuck to the ground like a suction cup, no competition car (let alone “ordinary” supercars) in the world has ever reached it’s speed in tight bend and (relatively..top was around 185 km/h) low speed tracks like those of the WRC.

Hi i worked for Audi Sport UK on the A2, S1 and E2, the E2 in 1986 was giving an honest 600BHP and was the most powerful car ever entered in the WRC
The WRC cars did indeed start setting quicker stage times from 1992 for the following reasons:-
    Massive tyre improvements
Electronic Engine Management including Anti Lag releasing huge Torque
    Suspension Adjustability
    Braking
(from 1995) Electronic Diffs, the group B cars gave huge power from 5000rpm onwards, the 1992 WRC cars gave more responsive power from 3000rpm and larger torque output.
Group B was amazing but later cars became far easier to drive for the above reasons

Kevlar-carbon body panels and monocoque over tubular chrome-molybdenum spaceframe with titanium powertrain elements and monstrously genius engine. Absolutely uncompromising hi-tech. Even 40 years later.
Delta S4 was far more friendly to handle & drive at gravel or snow surfaces, like a fish in the water. But it was extremely tricky at asphalt (and extremely quick with proper handling in same time) and only extremely talented pilots can reveal the full potential of S4 at asphalt. Actually, only one person who was able to reveal full potential is Henri Toivonen. Literally anyone involved in competition during that period said the same thing about. It is like Delta S4 was created for Henri. And he only started to shine, but... stupid and dangerous decision of Lancia team management drew all into darkness.

this s4 prototype was actually originally called the 038 since it was the next rally car model for lancia (the previous was the 037) but then they decided to change the name to the s4.
little known fact though: there was an earlier prototype than this called the "mazinga". this was a very VERY early variant of the car. so early in fact the front and rear end cover was an 037 cover shaped to "fit" the body lines so it would seem sort of like if they had the final design on since there werent any finished bodies yet. after testing, this variant had heat and exhaust issues along with the power increase being so great that they needed to upgrade to 4wd. yes, the mazinga prototype was rwd (even though multiple engineers asked for it to be 4wd)

Audi won against ancient RWD machines with the only 4WD in the championship. Still Lancia won the teams championship with a dedicated RWD car that year. Audi never really got on top of the issues it had with its 4WD system aka understeer. When other teams brought out their dedicated 4WD cars they quickly put Audi into its place. Lancia was among the best at that time. And they went on to remain best for years on.
