I was telling my Brazilian wife that the emotion and intensity of the 72 summit series was like 10 football world cups wrapped into one.
50 years later, and still I cannot understand why Henderson is not in the hall of fame. Watch the games. His play was stellar, shift after shift. He scored game winning goals to even the series. Then he scored the most precious, iconic goal in all of hockey history. ALL Canadians admired him, and they remember that moment to their dying days. Generations know of the Henderson goal. If this is not fame, then what is?
Smiling for over an hour is hard work!! My cheeks hurt a little now.
Knuckles should have his number in the rafters. He protected star players. Hockey was different in the 80s and without him Habs would have not been the same team. Knuckles will always be in my eyes a star!
We need to start a Twitter campaign or something to get Henderson into the Hall of Fame. It's bloody well time, long overdue.

My Mom worked at Eaton's in 1972 and I was 12 and i liked the $1000 26" Color Zenith TV's they had for SALE and the 8th Game was being played on one of them :D ! It was Lunch time and lots would walk downhill the 3 blocks from SCHOOL to the Orchard Cafe where the game was on the RADIO as they ate their French Fries! So I got to see the last 3 goals (1 goal and 2 Assists in that 3rd Period by Phil Esposito! Amazing!). Anyway to see that goal at 34 seconds to go made anyone watching jump up and down...I ran over to the Restaurant and there was French Fries and Ketchup everywhere! Paul Henderson's 3rd Game Winner in a row! Had Team Canada held on to a 4-1 lead and won 4-3 rather than lose 5-4 in the 5th game, it would have been his 4th in a row! What a difference from the sick feeling we had in our stomachs at the end of the 2nd Period when it was 5-3 ...as Cournoyer said...can't let in any goals and need a quick one (Esposito's Goal) to sort of get back in it. Yvan ties it up with around 7 minutes or so left! Then they wanna claim a Victory on goals for and against! Thank God Henderson got set up by Phil with about 35 seconds left...1st shot was saved but 2nd attempt went in as he was square to Tretiak and got his own rebound! The top 3 goal scorers (7 goals each) Esposito, Henderson and Yakushev at their best! The bad refereeing and Tretiak at his very best made it close. That goal with 34 seconds left was BRANDED into everyone's BRAIN that saw it LIVE!

Two things totally true for me. In Junior High School I heard about the players invited to the team to try out. We had a blackboard in our basement so I put together Canada's lines etc. together. One line I put together was Clarke centering Henderson and Ellis (the one line that stayed together throughout the series and were the most consistent). Second I remember being in class and our teacher would not let us see the third period of game 8. This one class to her was more important. The class next to us was allowed to see the third period, so while we were in class they got to see the game. So here we are, Canada is losing but we hear a cheer from the class next to us so we cheer. Then another cheer (I guess Yvan's tying goal) and then of course the winning goal. We knew what was happening because of the classroom next to us. Yup, still cannot believe this one teacher denied us witnessing that final third period

Vladislav Tretiak was a magician in the net and the team in front of him was solid. They would pass the puck endlessly while waiting for a the right occasion to commit. Hockey was different back then.
Hi Knuckles this is got to be the best podcast you've ever done. These players Serge, Yvan & Paul and Team canada '72 it's the best hockey memory of my life. I don't care what Paul says, that he doesn't care. He's at peace with not being in the HHOF. But I speak for a lot of Canadians. Paul should be in the HHOF 100%. Now It's 50 years he's due. Make it right HHOF members in 2022. Rick from Ottawa. I hope to see you there on Oct.21st
Thank you so much Chris for doing that 🙏 with these three class acts ,great show ,wow I started reliving my childhood through that ,I had the great honor of seeing that series. I remember the intensity was at a whole other level. And yes we got to watch every game of that series ,and it was totally awesome because in n.s. everything outside went dead quiet . Not a soul could be seen ,and I know our province completely shut down . You would thought we were at war. But it was so great watching the games in school. They brought out the big screens ,and put them tall metal carts so they were up high ,and no one would miss anything, a total celebration in the classroom s ,and when finished they let go immediately to celebrate the victory. Of course I was a huge hockey fan. 🏒 what a complete great moment In this country 👏 👌. I think it was the best moment I ever witnessed of everyone coming together in Canada, our little province of n.s. ,I don't think we ll ever see that again. These guys were my heroes . And for Henderson to get those huge winners 🏆 how deserving for a guy who didn't get the credit in the n h l 👏. So humble . And I adore the roadrunner ,and Serge was one of our big three,dependable. I even remember the news coming out he wasn't happy being sat a couple of games . But I think Sinden did that to stoke the 🔥 fire in Savard . Once you pissed him off you knew he was coming to play ,take no hostage s. The Roadrunner again to me a guy who didn't get enough for what he s accomplished in Montreal. That man could fly with just a couple of steps ,and he could shoot . Never afraid to go to the dirty places either. You wouldn't have known he was a small player . But he played big.

the roadrunner looks fantastic ! they all look great and like the others said thank you Knuckles for having access to these heroes of our youth . These guys are such classy people - the way they talk about the Russian people with such empathy. Not going to hear that from many athletes today it is all about show me the money . Their scouting report was that Tretiak was terrible - it turned out they had scouts watch him once - it was right after his bachelor party and so they thought he was a very weak goalie
My brother was a big hockey fan and that’s how I began to follow it. I was 7 years old and the Bruins had just defeated my Rangers in the finals. I knew that hockey was Canada’s game and familiar with many of the players on that team. I thought there was no chance a team from Russia could beat the best from the NHL. The Russian team looked so different all clad wearing the same helmets and their goalie wearing a caged face mask. Then I couldn’t believe it when they won convincingly in that first game (which by the way was broadcast on public television network). I remember my brother telling me of Henderson’s series winning goal which happened to be on his birthday 9/28. I was elated that the pride of Canada and the NHL were still intact. This series had a lasting effect on me even at an age just getting into the sport. Love hearing from those legendary players reminisce about it.

Yvan and Serge were incredible players and as a life long Leaf fan they pissed me off many times. Much respect has to go to them but its hard. I am so glad I got to golf with Yvan and Henri once.

that was Clarence Campbell - the WHA was just going to start and he said if any WHA players were on the team - then no NHL players would be allowed to play

We got to watch Game 8, during grade 7 school…the country stopped for that epic contest. I’m glad Chris brought up the Hull, Orr, Sanderson & Cheevers factor. Knuckles is a real student/fan of the game, passionately honest. I STILL believe Dryden made his name as that upstart, unknown rookie that backstopped the ‘71 Habs. For myself, he had the greatest blueline in NHL history in front of him. Like Mr. Nilan, I grew up a Bruins fan, Johnny Buyck was from Edmonton, his brother lived in my neighborhood. Espo was always my favourite, a national hero‼️We respectfully, HATED the Canadiens❗️During the 2010, Vancouver Olympics, we got to attend the preliminary game between Canada & the USA. They interviewed the Roadrunner, literally behind my back, between periods. Got a picture, just turned around…Fergie was a tough-as-nails, East Van boy.

I have often thought that I would really like to me you sometime. You mention something in this podcast as a question on who scored the tying goal that I often aske people and few remember. I an a personal friend of Paul Henderson's for about 45 years. You are to me, a Canadian even though you are a Boston guy. You understand the game of hockey and appreciate it more than most watching the game today. You look great and I am pleased to see you doing so well because I at almost 80 I understand the very bumpy road life can be when people see you as an aggressive sometimes scary guy. Hey knuckles My mom went to school in Lucknow Ontario with Paull Henderson and they were good Friends and we still live about 20 minutes from Lucknow Ontario and I have met Paul numerous times
I was at Carlton University in Ottawa watching the game at the cafeteria/pub. There was one guy who kept cheering for the Russians and when Canada won we threw him in the Rideau canal.
At the time my teacher was Mrs Maloney who was Dan Maloney ‘s sister-in-law . Who later became a leaf player and coach of Leafs in 80”s
That was great .
In 1972, I was an 11 year old Habs fan. The only stain on the 72 series Clarke's wicked slash of Kharlamov's ankle. I wonder if we would have won otherwise.

This was a great reminder of this series. I was one of the 14 million Canadian's that lived and died with the ups and downs.
I also played minor hockey at the time.
Our team just were quite misled by the Soviets and underestimated them , hugely.
If we hadn't and had Orr and Hull, Canada might of lost 2 games , even with the crooked officiating in Russia.
In Russia, our team won the series constantly on the penalty kill.

One hell of a series. I am Canadian but I don't think Canada won by much. I think hockey was much improved by the Soviet hockey style.

This is a great podcast. If any of you true hockey fans haven't seen the '72 Summit Series, you need to. It's the greatest hockey series in hockey history. And we know even back then the Soviets were on the "juicing" program and Canada still beat them. What an incredible series. There's a documentary on this too. The entire series is on CZcams.
Canada have 650000 hockey players! USA have 500000 hockey players! Ovechkin's Russia only 80000 hockey players today! Canada should have 7 guys who have scored over 800 goals like Ovechkin today! USA should have 6 guys who have scored over 800 goals like Ovechkin! Pavel Bure's father was 3th bronze medal 100 meter freestyle swimming olympics in 1972! Spitz USA won that race! North America USA and Canada had better medical doctors than Russian doctors in 1972!
Henderson has really gotten a big head now, Hull played two years later with a old WHA team and lead the series with 7 goals and 9 points , Henderson was on that team and got 3 points, again in 76 Hull the series with 5 goals, Henderson is right ,had hull played he might not have made the team, to say Bobby Hull would not have made a difference is RIDICULOUS . Tretiak in his book said, he could not see Hull shot, it was in the net is a blink of an eye .hull was 35 at this time.

Chris there used to be a hockey game called strat-o-matic and your ratings were 111 very low but AA on Penalties high and a 1-14 intimidation the best lol you and Rissling were a force but I had to create a fight system to see who won haha . Hey great job on the podcast and much luck !

If Bobby Orr was in great shape ...and he had played in the 1972 series... he would have played 25 minutes each game and would have replaced Bergman and Seiling..... Bobby would have been untouchable and would have helped Canada to win the last 7 games....

@@Biblelover1963 Sure. You speak truth. However, I live in China and although there isn't western freedom here, there is little to no personal debt. China has tons of housing, inexpensive and excellent mass transit and inexpensive food. In America, housing sucks, no mass transit in general and 'good' food is too expensive for most people. America its built around the car and higher education, in most cases, requires debt.
Everybody's a little different. I spent 55 years in America and it was mostly very good to excellent. I find the world very interesting and America a little boring. And I speak 4 or 5 languages so I like to use them. I miss playing golf but I'll survive.
