Just the Basics - Easy Way to Paint Glass
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
Here is a quick lesson on how to get started drawing and painting a glass - I like to say it is the ILLUSION of glass. This lesson is applicable for all glass vessels: Drinking glasses, Vases, Wine glasses (and bottles) and cocktail glasses. The same lesson will apply to all!
If you have ever wanted your glassware to appear convincing… here are a few do's and don'ts:
The DO'S
• Practice drawing ovals - not perfect ones - start free-hand!
• Draw an oval looking down on it
• Draw the top, the waterline and the bottom - all the same oval (hint: the bottom oval is the same - but maybe smaller, depending on the type of glass
• Next, connect the sides of the glass - straight lines for a drinking glass, creative curves for a vase
The DON'T'S
• When you connect the sides of the glass or vase, don't make the bottom flat (you will instinctively want to) - curve the bottom in an oval to match the other ovals
I taught myself how to paint the illusion of all different types of glass by photographing glasses in sunlight… early morning, midday to get a range of options. Then I painted what I saw - the darks, the lights, reflections, sparkle and the hot spots!
It's just about looking slower and closer, then painting what you see.

I just watched again and went to like again! It happens all the time. I watch lots of theory videos. Then I come back to Bob and begin to enjoy the process ❤
I love the way he simplifies.
Thank you very much. You are beyond generous by giving us the gift of artistic directions. I get so much from your videos. My style has truly evolved and most of all, I am having fun! Again Thank You Robert Burridge.
Thanks Mary!
At first the temptation to sketch it perfectly is hard to break. It seems to good to be true that it doesn't have to be perfect.
You sir are a fantastic teacher. More basic tutorials please. 🍏
Thanks Bob, I'll refer back to this video again! You're one of my top favs!
Like this one. Helps to understand what we are really seeing. Thanks Bob!

Most appreciated, much love 🙏🏻🌞
Thanks!
As always this was wonderful! I love doing, or trying😊, this if graphite as I love to draw...but I'm about to turn 49 and only began teaching myself to draw and paint about 6 years ago...never thought I could as much as I wanted to...I had a lot of physical handicaps, so I only get days here or there when my hands will work or my back will let my legs work and just found out there's more...but...it'll all be fine
I forced myself to start learning out of desperation and needing an outlet and something beautiful to keep my mind off the chronic pain and frustration. And I was truly surprised at myself. I'm nothing great at all...don't get me wrong...but that things even came close to looking like the flower I was drawing was a complete shock!! Every time I go to draw or paint i worry being able to do it will be gone...aahaahahahaha! But it saved my life and especially emotionally. I get frustrated that I'm not further along, but, I can only practice when I can practice....so I have to tell you how much I appreciate your videos, because you're just so kind and excited and that makes me excited! I appreciate the work you and so many artists go through to put up content here, but it helps me SO much because on the many days that my body stops working, I always know I can watch beautiful things in here and be inspired and it helps keep me in a good head space and always looking forward to the good days instead of being too sad about the bad days.
So, thank you for that!!
And glass and water is such a fun and interesting subject. Thank you for being there and always so encouraging!! :)
This is fascinating! I'm not a painter but I appreciate art & Bob's passion for painting is infectious! TFS! Take care!

This helped me with a painting I left unfinished for a year and a half, tysm
This is so much more fun that in a school- they just told us to draw. No explanation. That'd be 50 bucks per useless lesson. Thank you, Bob 😍

Hi. Can I ask you where you've got that paper please?
I get my art supplies from a variety of places - Cheap Joe's Art Stuff, Dick Blick and Jerry's.
Where's my stuff!! 😜
I think you’re the reincarnation of Archimedes
Hey bob the. Oval at the bottom is not the same. It's rounder perspective 101.
