Quick Guide - How to Paint the Light Source
    Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
This BobBlast is a quick guide to establishing the light source in your paintings. Using light areas, dark areas and shadows creates the illusion of depth and dimension.
Watch the video to see my step by step process:
Step One - Determine what you are about to paint. In this case, it is a colorful ball.
Step Two - Tone the paper overall - my choice is a warm mid-tone. I am using Holbein's Orange Gesso.
Step Three - When the mid-tone has dried, determine the direction and source of your light. Is it a window? A spotlight? Overall light?
Step Four - Paint the circle that will be your colorful ball.
Step Five - Choose your color palette. I use a limited palette of four colors.
Step Six - I start with the pure dabs of the lightest light - right at the point of the light source shining on the ball. I use a one-inch brush and short, choppy strokes and move to the darker side of the ball - choosing my darkest dark.
Step Seven - Blend these short, choppy strokes from the light side to the dark side in the middle of the ball.
Step Eight - The background - you decide if you will use a light or dark background. There is no right or wrong way.
Step Nine - To anchor the ball, add a shadow underneath… moving away from the light source.
Step Ten - Now is the time to check the painting all over. Fine tune any part that stops your eye, for any reason, such as wrong color, bad drawing, doesn't visually hold together.
The second half of the video is a demonstration of the same light source principles, only with a colorful pear!

Well this lesson came up right when I needed it! I was just lamenting that my pears were better when I started doing them, than went I recently came back to them. I had lost the basics, I had to get back to them. Thanks!

Stumbled upon one of your videos this afternoon. Haven't painted in three years but immediately picked up a big brush and followed your wonderful instruction. Did a creditable cup and now I'm excited about painting again. Will watch all your tutorials. You're a great teacher.

Thank you Bob. You bring joy when it is becoming harder to find.
I’ve been in a slump. I’ve made things too complex and lost the simplicity. Back to the studio for me to paint pears and put paint to canvas with abandon.

Bob, I’m so lucky to have found you! You’re truly a real blast! You’re style and fruit is simply amazing! I would say you had green fingers but that wouldn’t be right as you’re a true artist and they’re white from the beautiful fingerly highlights! I’m now going to have to do this in watercolour and have fun! Please, please, I need to know more about your classes!

Hi Bob….I love the way you teach……I love your videos. Thank you for what you do!!
I just finished watching this video. Before this one I watch the video of you in Sarasota, Fl. Doing your demos. In that video you emphasize the importance of painting light…dark…light dark with a circle and then a pear as example….I loved it..I got it and all so important.
But then I just watched this video and you painted the background all the same light greenish blue. Even the table……no darks other than the shadow or the right side of the pear…..does this contradict your earlier video that I mentioned…OR is ok with the background all one color because you are using the pear colors for the contrast of the background….this one confuses me.
Thank you again……I a now watching every day!!! If thumbs up!!!
    Charlotte
