What a Mess! - Part One
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
So you’ve painted a mess… Now what?? I’ve painted my share of turkeys! So now you have a choice. You can gesso over the entire surface and start over, or you can continue with this painting, turning it into a completely different one!
One of the most popular assignments in my Loosen Up Workshop is painting loose and juicy flower bouquets. Today's demo begins with loosely splashed colors on watercolor paper. Start off by splashing and making a big mess. Make sure it’s wet - I use paper towels to put the colors down.
I am not using a specific color combination - I am going for the gusto, with loose, abstract splashing. I keep my brush, paper towels or fingers moving quickly with pure color, avoiding making mud.
You’re making a mess - not mud. When your mess has dried, choose a color scheme and paint the part that is NOT a bouquet of flowers. I generally paint my negative space with an opaque color or a color mixed with a lot of white gesso. I make a significant amount of this color - sopping wet.
Next I emphasize the light source and exaggerate the darks and shadows. Put color everywhere - the vase, the flowers and the background are all colorful splashes!
For me, a painting is never finished - it just stops at interesting places!

Hello Bob. I love your channel. Making a mess sometimes produces the best finished results. Keep that inspiration coming. Truly superb!
Bob you’re the best!
Great video, I like your positive attitude, wonderful. Hello from South Africa.
Bobs are legends.
I love your beautiful painterly messes!!
I love your videos and have learned so much from them. Thank you!!! I used the paper towels after using them to paint with and made flowers and then negative painting with a vase. Turned out pretty cool… wish I could send a pic. My “messy flowers” are getting 100’s (and one 1,100!) of likes on FB thanks to you. It’s become my new way of painting. They are very different from yours’ but you gave me the inspiration to try them. I really appreciate your videos.
Thank you Laurel! Glad you are enjoying the BobBlasts!
Thanks Bob.

You’re so inspiring.🤗👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Its a lovely Way to open up the sensuel presence and maybe surprise - the mess is a kind of color doodeling - and I love that, exactly as I love to improvise - and then the art is to have an improvized mix of the conscious and the unconscious 🎶🧡🎵🙃
hi Bob, goodmorning. I really love your approach and fun way of presentation. I am an instant fan. Will follow you from now on. Thanks.
Thanks Monique! Appreciate You!
Love you Bob!!! You share your heart and passion and talent so generously….and you encourage us to fly!!
Thank you!!!
Thanks!
Aloha, Bob! Another good one. Wish you were around 30 years ago when I went to art school (was accepted at MICA but couldn't afford to go even with partial scholarship). Suffered terribly for my perfectionism as you might imagine. No one back then was teaching messing up. In art, maybe in life, messing up is key. It's not about starting out doing a great job; it's ALL about getting the reps in. Smearing colors around is how you learn paint and colors. Then you can do what you want. Keep up the good work!
Mahalo, Pasha 🌺
Thank you!!!

Enjoyed this one thanks much
Hi Bob, thank you for your generous advices! I’m used to paint with acrylics without dipping my brush in water. I’d love you to make a video to demonstrate the pros and cons of painting with water, that would add to my toolbox of techniques !
Hello Isabelle how are you doing today
nice job, Bob.
So awesome! 🥳
Good stuff Bob .The bible says the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord and he delights in his ways though he fall though he fall he shall not be cast down for the Lord delights in his way . And that's how it is with art mistake happen but we get up with the Lords help and start again and again and again .And yes its fun .

Formidable MESS
How do you light your studio and your videos?
Greetings from China. 来自中国的问候 !!
Can't figure this one out hope he's enjoying himself am not a good painter but this is a joke he's having us on get real
His message is A if it's not working then B go ahead and make a mess & look at this C buy some very expensive products. This is actually a scam because he isn't focusing on any real foundational skills. People don't need to go buy all these expensive supplies to merely do finger painting. What a scammer.
