- To fulfill a need for welding on an upcoming project, I have purchased the cheapest wire feed welder I could get from Home Depot!

Three years ago, I bought the same three things as you did, plus a pair of Lincoln Electric Matador MIG Pliers. For structural purposes 1/4" Mild Steel, using multi-pass, is the limit, & 1/8" Mild Steel, single pass is the limit. For non-structural purposes 1/4" or larger is no problem, as long as you have a 20A breaker.
I am using E71TGS, 0.035” flux core wire on a Forney 140FC-i to weld on 1/8 in. angle iron. First I did some T-Joints and then a cut and etch test, I was impressed with the weld penetration. It’s similar if not identical to 7018 stick. I am a stick rod man, but I like to keep an open mind.

Nice and exquisite machine, brand name, too! Try a cut and etch after you weld joints and look at the penetration of the weld. I can assure you that it is similar to the results made by a 7018 rod. Take care my friend.
I'm trying to add 4ft sides to a utility trailer with 8, 36 inch angle iron and mesh. Will this welder work?
I'd imagine so. But the outcome is going to depend on the operator. I've been pleasantly surprised at the strength of this little welder, of course I am not an experienced welder...
Use a fan to blow the toxic smoke away from you. Flux core is a dirty process...

I bought a century welder from my neighbor it's older but it's about 2.5 times the size of yours and heavy. It loads wire in bottom. I haven't used it yet but I'm wondering how heavy of metal it can weld
Glad i watched to the end... da@m, that last piece Was impressive. Hoping to finally break mine out of the box and fix some stuff. Btw, i hear you do get better penetration with the .30 wire. It's prolly hotter, so maybe they start everyone on .35 to ensure early success... maybe give the .30 a shot 💁.

Start with the .030 wire, it's way more versitile stuff,... and works better on a smaller amp breaker. just SLOW DOWN, let it create a molten pool then drag it slowly along

forney 140 fc i or century 90?? running off of solar with top of the line inverter. would love ten pound spools. welding thinner stuff like steel barrels and then welding chain link fence. Tia.
Lol I bought the same exact welder and the goodie box with the mask and tools at Home Depot today. For not knowing anything either, I think I did ok.

May I have your advice please I'm looking to start welding and really tight on cash. Which one would you prefer this particular Lincoln or the Harbor Freight titanium 125?

Not having owned or used the HF Titanium 125 I can't say much about it. I went with the Century(lincoln) because I have a credit card at Home Depot and money was a little tight 🙂
But I've been very satisfied with it in the limited time I've used it
Ive heard nothing but bad things about the titanium..burns out in several months..id get with this one the century fc90.Great welder for the price.
Look up a CZcams channel called strange garage.. he has some flux core videos that shows how to weld with a flux core machine. Also the best wire for the money is on Amazon it's in a neon green package called inetub. It's like $15 for 2 pounds. Also I've always had good luck out of the harbor freight wire. With a small machine only run .030 wire. And make sure to use .030 tips.. and buy a pack of tips. Change them out when that one gets dirty and all boogard up.
I think I watched a few of his when I bought it! I also saw a comparison between the Lincoln wire and the HF wire, I think it was weld.com's channel maybe?
This machine is made for .035 wire, and works great! I'll try .030 if there's ever a need.
I'm going to try stainless wire next, i think the brand is blue demon.
Use nozzle gel and you won't need to replace the tips as often.

Think I could use this machine to weld a small metal plate onto my truck frame? Trying to cover a small rust hole
Probably! I would definitely get my hands on some similar metals to do some practice welds first but I don't see why it wouldn't be possible.
@@DustyDingus aight, I mean I don't think the frame is compromised that bad from the rust rot, just wasn't sure of the weld strength, given the stress, bumps etc... I'm not a welder so I don't know the calculations

No, you need a welder with a shield gas to weld aluminum, this will only work with flux core wire.

It really depends on the skills of the operator, and I don't really have any welding skills lol

It'll weld, that's for sure! I had to run it on the lower side in order to not blow through the side of tube
Noob here as well. So what’s a good starting pint for the settings? My upper control arm mount tore off a little from the frame. So I’m planning on getting it flat then welding it. Then putting a plate over the tear and weld that as well. As added support
@@808kea808 it depends on the thickness of the metal, but there are decent starting settings (suggestions really) on the inside of the lid of the machine. They seemed to work ok. You just lookup the thickness of metal you'll be welding in the little chart and put the knobs at those settings and giver a go. Might be good to find some similar materials to do some test welds on first
I got the same thing. I dunno about you, but the helmet that comes with that starter pack ain't working out for me...way too dark with that #11 shield. I ended up ordering another helmet off amazon.

That welder is only capable of welding 1/8 inch you're trying to weld 1/2 inch that's why your weld is too tall not getting penetration It is a good welder tho
I turned the wire speed down and the power up and was getting pretty good penetration on 1/2 inch. Should saw one in half...
Learning more every time I turn it on.
