- I found a new watercolor brush that I love to use, especially when painting flowers. This brush makes painting flowers with watercolor so easy it's practically cheating. In this video, I paint three different flowers that compare the round brush I normally use with this filbert brush.

i don't know ... the filbert give you cleaner, sharper lines, but i love the more painterly look of the flowers made with the round brush. each have their purpose. all the results are beautiful either way thank you jenna for the demo.
That is exactly what I was thinking as well. Although both red flowers are pretty in their own right, I am more drawn to the left flower.
Us beginners need all the help we can get! So many videos are like 'just paint a stroke like this, so simple' - except it's not simple for beginners, especially ones that aren't naturally artistic! So thanks! I'll try this on the weekend. I especially liked how your gerberas turned out.
The right brush for the job is an old toll painters creed. Makes life so much easier.
The rose painted with the round looks so much better.
I agree
I love that you keep your palette in the frame so we can see exactly what you do when you go for more paint, it can be so informative and very few watercolor teachers show that part in their lessons. Also, you are very good at describing what you are doing with your brush ~ very specific and detailed thank you so much. Can’t wait to give it a try!
Fun watching you get excited about a different style brush. I’ve been using filberts for small filler leaves with a small filbert , it does great. Thanks Jenna!
Great video, thank you so much! Just started with watercolor , I have your book and following your tutorials! Love it all💖
Love this brush. Your instructions are excellent. Thanks for the E-Book.
Ooh how fun! I esp like the yellow Florwer on its side.
Thanks for the generosity of sharing your knowledge. I enjoy watching you teach and I always learn some new and exciting things.Regards from Iceland
Love your tutorials Jenna, you made it look so easy yet the flowers are beautiful 🤩
Thanks for the informative video! I’ve never used a filbert brush before, but I’m going to pick one up and give it a go. Thanks for the inspiration! Love you channel and I enjoy your book!
My first timing seeing you. A montage of info that I am soaking in. For the two different brushes you used, I definitely like each for different reasons and combining the two. I have a rounded brush at home that I can't wait to mess around with now for flowers. Thanks so much!!
My Goodness! I have several of those brushes but never tried to paint flowers! Perfection!!
First video for filbert. When I got my first filbert, I was so confused as to how to use it. Will try these tricks in the future!!!! 💕❤️
Wow! So excited to try this!! 💜
You are the very best Jenna! Love your videos!
Mind blown about using the opposite end of the round brush to pull veins into the flower petals! 🤯Also I’ve noticed you using these new brushes so thanks for the side-by-side difference! I’ll have to try them out!
Now I know how to use the filbert brush I bought a while ago. Thanks Jenna!
Thank you very much for the freebies , you are one of my favorite teachers. !!.
Thanks for sharing Jenna Rainey, I did not think the use of this palm tree would be so great after watching your video. I am also a person who loves drawing flowers, so your video is great, it gives me many options to draw a flower.
I have one filbert brush and never use it yet!
But now definintaly I'll go try it 👍
Thank you Jenna 🙏
Thank you! I grabbed a filbert and am trying it out!
Thank you for the terrific tutorial! Off to look for a filbert brush!
Thank you Jenna for sharing. Have trouble painting flowers.
I like both brushes you have used today. You're round brush flowers'" are unique too
Dude! I can’t wait to try this out!
Just ordered a filbert. Need to give it a try. Thank you.
The filbert brush is my favorite brush because it's so incredibly versatile perdiodt.
I just promised myself I wouldn't buy any more brushes! Lol! But after watching this and reading some of the comments Jenna, I just have to try the filbert for those flowers! Lol!
😜🎨🖌
When I painted in oils for 17 years, and mostly florals, I used a Filbert brush. Doing leaves is also easy. So I went back and use a Filbert brush for petals, particularly daisies, sunflowers, etc.
Love, love, love. Of course!
I finally got my blooms brush and I love it!
I really enjoy using the filbert brush too.
I love that you are still experimenting and learning new stuff is this media. It reminds me that there is always another place to go, a different challenge to tackle. Thanks for the inspiration. I am lucky enough to have a gift set of very nice brushes is all shapes and sizes. Time for some simple testing to see what they can do. 🖌️
I think experimenting keeps things fun... brushes is all shapes and sizes sound fun, lots for you to experiment with Loretta
Looks like I’m getting some filbert brushes! 😂 I like the way the petals separated when you painted them. This was really useful! Thanks! :)
Exactly the info I was looking for, thanks!
Beautiful painting 🥰
You do beautiful flowers. I loved this video. It will help me. Thank you
Thanks friend the work is lovely 🥰
OMG im a beginner of painting ,after watching ur video i learn a lot !!!! love ur sharing~👍
Love you and your videos! Even better than a filbert is a cats tongue! It’s the best of both worlds and I’m addicted!
I have loved filbert brushes for years. I have one that is misplaced right now. So I had my daughter pick up 2 for me recently. Dagger brushes are also fun.
Great instruction-thanks for sharing this!
I love your style - how you shape the flowers (with either brush) I’ve been staring at my filbert brushes and now, thanks to your video, I’m going on a filbert adventure😂
I like the different looks .... very pretty! Princeton Heritage has filberts. I'm getting mine!!!!! Love your videos always! 💌💖
Hi Jenna, I likethe end result of the way you paint every flower. Hal
❤brilliant!
i have always preferred filbert brushes for certain things, i just love them
This was a good demo for the filbert brush. It definitely has a place in my gallery of brushes. I thought with the anemone it kind of squared off the tips of the flowers.
Thank you for another great tip!!
I like the round brush results so much better for the rose but the others the filbert seems like nice change. Thanks for demo, appreciate your time!!
Thanks for sharing Jenna...never tried a filbert with watercolor!
Left side round prettiest
Wonderful!
Great video, I learned a lot! Thanks.
Very nice video!! so charm!
That was great help❤
I will have to give the filbert a try I also have it but I tend to just use the round brushes for flowers.
I haven’t tried that but recently started using a dagger from Kristy Rice collection. I think it has a similar feel. Definitely easier to paint flowers with the dagger than the round.
Thanks for your help 👍
You and Paul are the Bestest!! :)
I can not wait to try a filbert brush to paint a watercolor flower- thank you!
I love your style
Amazing work
I love my filberts!
Interesting. My soulmate brush shape is the cat's toungue. I feel like I never need to switch brushes ever because it is so versatile and can take many "shapes".
Same^^
I love watching videos of ppl using cat’s tongue to make roses. So romantic-looking
Very beautiful art work 👌👌
true! i just discovered this brush too! :)
Thank you so much! Sharing your gifts so generously has brought more joy to me than you will know! My Mom is super artistic and until I started painting with you I totally thought there was a windstorm the day the Art fairy dust was released! 3 months later...my husband told his students..."my wife is an artist". The favorite part of my day is a cup of tea and painting with You Jenna!!!!
Jenna is def super generous & you are super fortunate to have such a supportive husband who proudly proclaimed his wife's artistic talents to his students. All the best on your watercolour journey Lisa :)
Man when I finally wanted to get back into painting recently I spent a considerable amount of time in Michael’s just figuring out which brushes I should get, searching for some small sets with good variety to save money instead of buying each individually, and I focused mostly on making sure I had a variation of round brush sizes BUT I was particularly drawn a discounted Filbert 10 brush the only one left, and I didn’t want to pass it up, and then when I tested it I was IN LOVE with the effects I got. I can’t believe I haven’t used it since the first test, but I guess it’s because I’ve just been trying to practice with one or two round sizes but this makes me especially want to mess with it again, it’s such a great shape to work with.
The MIMIK squirrel are wonderful. They are vegan (non animal), available on Amazon. They are sometimes on sale, but either way the small sets of 5 brushes are the way to go. The brushes last for years.
Thank-You, this was fun and very-helpful!
Glad you enjoyed!
Really enjoy your videos! Thank you 🎨
❤️❤️
All sold out on Amazon! Good job!
You know, when you first started painting I really felt like I preferred the look from the round brush, but at the end I definitely see a difference. I think I was a little biased because of how versatile a round brush is, but you’ve demonstrated that filberts are just as versatile for certain styles. Thank you!
I will confess to having had one and not using it. Thanks! Yay!
have you tried a pointed filbert though?! It makes painting plants like ferns SO effortless. I love them sooo much
Super helpful thanks
I also have that brush!😃
awesome!
Okay, well now I want one… dammit Jenna! Lol
😂😂😂 lol
Me too 😏
@@JennaRaineyChannel is the filbert also called a cat's tongue brush?
🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@recoveringsoul755 no thats a different brush
Forget the paints and brushes....your jawline! 😍 so sharp! 😃
I love the Filbert Grainer for painting fur, feathers, and grasses ... and, I agree, it feels like cheating!
If you haven't yet: try starting with the Filbert on it's edge. Then as you press down on the brush, rotate it so it is on the flat side. The stroke can end here or you can rotate back to the side while reducing pressure. Filbert are also good at loading brush with one color then dipping one side ( or corner) in another color.
Yes! It makes it pointy on one end and round on the other!
Thanks for the tutorial!!! I guess I'll be making a trip to HobbyLobby tomorrow!!!
Hiya Jenna, It's not cheating as the brush itself was a creative process in its inception and development. If it works use it. I'm a new subscriber from England and Paul Apps recommended your channel. Thanks very much for a great video. David.
This is the video I have been waiting for!!! Now I want one, though maybe with a shorter handle. I feel like I would constantly stab myself with such a long handle (unless it is an optical illusion)
I took this video as an artist discovering a new tool to aide her in her craft. Much like everyone else when they discovered a tool that made what they did easier. It's an opinion. By sharing this, she's giving a look into how each brush behaves when painting each type of flower, the leaves, and stems. While there are things she still uses a round brush for, there are also ones that she prefers to use the Filbert brush on. Again, it's an opinion. Every creator has their favorite tool(s). Each person will view the art and form their own opinions. That is what art is. Subjective. The meaning, the message, the emotions felt from any artwork is different between each person. That is another reason art is so beautiful. Whether you already knew of this brush or not, this was an informative video providing visuals to what this brush looks like in painting varying petals. For someone like me who is newer to watercolors, I am thankful for videos of this nature, as it provides me with a viewpoint on the different brushes, and aides in my development with watercolors. Thanks again for sharing!
Hi Jenna, you could sharpen the end of your filbert brush to emulate the wooden tip end of the rounds. Just either use a stanley knife or stick it in a sharpener. You could varnish it if you were worried about water damage :)
Hello jenna,, your art very beautiful my dear friend 💕 best wishes for you 💕❤️
filberts and striper/dagger brushes forever. I have so many rounds and I wish I would have held off on buying so many before trying different shaped brushes.
I'm pretty much an amateur artist - just teaching myself - and my medium is acrylic, but I love filbert brushes for their versatility. I wish I could find an acrylic artist with a video on paintbrushes! Thanks for this, Jenna!
The Art Sherpa has an acrylic tutorial about brushes. Happy painting!

My only hang up with Filbert brushes is the numerous ways they are numbered , very frustrating to me. #18, #28 eat. and then there is 3/4 inch , 1 inch yada , yada. love your video !
I’m a Newby to watercolor only 5 months. I’m hooked. I started watching your CZcams channel yesterday and still watching today. Learning so much. Will start practicing when my new supplies arrive on Friday. Meanwhile, where can I get the ebook?
Love, love, love this filbert brush! Is it a Princeton brush? It’s definitely made a beautiful flower 🌸 😊💜
Filbert brush is definitely good for certain types of florals. I love the yellow flower the most with filbert more than the one you painted with round brush
I Love this and I want one! Could I get an amazon link to the Filbert brush? You don't talk about what size brush it is and didn't link it in your description!
Thank you for the video. Can use my filbert brush better now
Great information. Do you have a video on doing a flower with a #50 filbert brush?
