    Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

    Chris, I think you are the new Bob Ross. I don’t mean with respect to style or approach to painting. But through your CZcams channel and Patreon page you make oil painting accessible for beginners and thereby encourage more people to take up art. This has many benefits, like for mental health for example. I, for one, am extremely grateful to you.

    Thank you! I have just painted a picture that I now know to call a study. We are in hard lockdown in my area because of the virus, so I can’t actually go to the spot I wanted to paint & have had to do it from memory instead. But now I know this is a study, so that’s fine. I’ll be able to correct it when we can go out again. Thanks for the fab video. You are such an inspiring educator. TED talk soon?

    This is all such awesome advice - I have learned so much already. You talked about trying to resist adding white to colours to make them chalky, can you point me towards a video that talks about darkening colours as I still get confused about whether to add mars black, ivory black or payne's grey - especially for shadows. Thanks in advance!! :)

    Hey Chris , I remember you saying you had issues with painting cars on a previous video when you were in college or your earlier painting years . Im pretty timid of doing portraits being that everything needs to be exact or it looks out of place and I feel like cars are in a way much similar . Can you elaborate more on what helped you fix your issue with cars as well as where to begin when painting cars . Is it just like everything else with applying the basics as far as simplifying everything and finding the shapes and values ? Or is there a particular area you should always do first when doing cars? I have a friend who wants me to paint his favorite car a "slug-bug" and Ive been doing practice painting after practice painting with different view points and angles and I just cant get it to look right . Any tips would really help and also would be appreciated. Thanks bro !

  • @RatusMax
    @RatusMax Před 3 lety +1

    When I recently started digital painting at least every weekend, the first painting after months to take off the rust, (I am trying to speed up my painting process) I looked at my painting and was like "damn, this came out bad." I tired to fix it but could not. I started on a new one and it was better. Then I looked at that first painting and realized what I did wrong.
    When I stopped painting for a long time I lost my eyes. In that I mean I was staring at the painting and adding what I think what should be there instead of focusing on the reference and painting what I see. (of course not all the details) This is a known habit of mine and it's always my culprit on why the likeness is off.
    That's why my #1 rule was
    Paint what you see, not what you think you see.
    I try to tell this to everybody. There are two images. The one in front of you and the one that is simplified by the mind. If you are not constantly switching your eyes back and forth from the reference to the painting you are most likely painting the image in your mind and not what's in front of you. I knew this rule and yet I broke it when I came back from a hiatus on painting. (That's why I am doing it every Saturday and Sunday now.)
    If you spend more than 4 seconds looking at the painting and putting down strokes, you are most likely painting from your mind and not life. I did that when I came back from hiatus (I am not a pro yet so I don't know if I can call it hiatus.)
    I am recommending this channel to everyone.

      @@alexderuiter1505 Key to painting nature. A good understanding between background, middleground, foreground.
      Having a vision about the end result is vital. This way one can know where the painting is going. (Only for creative stuff we let go and enjoy whatever happens on the canvas)
      Rest is just tones. Colours wont even matter. They just add extra flavour.
