- In this video, I show you how to overhaul Sachs Torpedo 3-speed hub. In the process, I disassemble, clean, and assemble this vintage internal gear hub. I used lithium-based grease and basic tools.

Excellent video! It helped me a lot to get all the parts together again.
But there is one thing; when you tighten the conelever lock nut with the plier, you actually tighten the ballbearing, and that is not how you do it, because it will be too tight and wear down the bearing and also make the wheel spin with friction.
You should tighten the first lock nut only with your fingers and when you then tighten with next lock nut it will press the first nut a slightly bit to the bearing. The bearing should spin easy without being loose. You will have to tight and loosen a few times until you get the proper tension.

That thing is definitely messier and more complicated, then a regular 3 speed without a coaster brake :) Thanks for the video.
Thank you for watching :D
Update: It worked - but I did a quicky; Just cleaned the hub with WD40 - especially the third gear (took that apart). Some oil here and there. Special grease on the brake cylinder and done! Works fine now.
Thanks from Germany! Best Video on this topic I trink!
Thanks from Switzerland. You helped me a lot!
Thank you for watching :D
thanks a lot!!! so much better discribed then any other video I saw until now.
I just picked up an old bike for $10 because I saw the 3 speed hub on it.
Thanks for the video - helped me alot!
Don't forget to put more grease 😂😂 Thanks mate, video helped a lot!
Thank you for watching :D
Hi Kabum! I love your overhauling videos. I did the Sturmey Archer 3 speed a while ago, using your tutorial. You take a lot of time to explain how to assemble the hub. This Torpedo looks some what more difficult than the Sturmey, but I’ll give it a go. ;-)
Thank you for watching :D
Thank you for a very pedagogic video. It helped me a lot. I have just one question. I did it according to your instructions in the video. I placed the recently served wheel back on my bicycle. I tried to push the pedals with my hands in a forward direction when my bike was placed upside down. I noticed that when I released the pedals from my hands, they were still moving slightly (between 180 - 360 degrees), despite the fact that I did not give them any force. I suspect that the rotation in the internal hub is still giving the chain some force and moving the pedals slightly forward. Do you think this is because I tightened the outermost lock nuts too hard? Or do you have any other thoughts. Greetings from an amateur mechanic in Sweden.
Thanks alot this Video saved me ❤
Thank you for the video
Thank you for watching my videos :)
...Vídeo perfeito 👍
thank you you are very good
Thank you for watching
I did this with mine. When back togheter the brake dont bite.. Do you think I put too much grease on the outside of the break cylinder?
Good Video and explained too.
Thank you for watching :)
Thank you for making it, haha I'm in california and the bike shops don't know what a torpedo is.They only sell mountain bikes and bikes made in China. Almost no service on bicycles.
Legend!
This video helped a lot! I thought I would "remember" the order of the pieces but well that wasn't the case so here. I am😅. Great work!
What is your experience with using lithium based grease on coaster brakes? Is it good enough to handle the heat?
Thank you for question, Yes it's the best multifunctional grease for bikes and definitely can handle the heat, and it's not expensive :D
In Holland we usually have the 3 gear hub combined with a drum brake. Do you think dismantling goes the same way?
Thank you for watching, I think they are pretty much the same :)
(is mij 2x overkomen) zie vanaf 28.00 in film.
Yes very comparable with SA-Hubs. If you put unadjustable cone in its place (28.00 onwards) push down driver with uout hands. If you just screw it down with force you risk to break the axle key when it stucks. I broke 2 of these axle keys that become RARE and EXPENSIVE!!
good film

That is the video I want to make in near future, maybe in week or two

You should have put your damn gloves on in the first place 15:00 Kabum. I work with someone who has very same accent as you. 😀 I use isopropyl alcohol 91-99% in a spray bottle and toothbrush to do my degreasing as well.
Yes I should :D Thank you for watching
hello! nice video. You dont put oil anywhere, just grase, its this ok? its from the manual
"LUBRICATION
Lubricate ball bearings by filling the spaces
between balls with grease. Be careful not to
grease pawls. Lubricate hub shell, brake
cylinder and friction spring liberally with
a high-temperature grease for steel brake
shoes. Oil, never grease, brake cone and
gear ring with a good cycle oil. (WD-40 is
too light for lasting lubrication, 3-in-1 Oil
gums up with age.)
Note to self: Study the principles of internal gearing.
How can I have this Tarpido gear unit for my England made RALAIGH Cycle...
No longer in production; parts become rare. Maybe better to repair the SA hub.
