    I live in Clear Lake, TX. and the eye literally crossed over our area... it was the most eerie feeling of peace. It was taunting. The wind was blowing in one direction and suddenly, after the eye wall passed, the wind completely changed to the opposite direction and trees and limbs started falling everywhere! It was terrifying. The wind was howling andit sounded like thousands of dying souls, very scary sounding. I NEVER want to experience that again.

      I'll never forget that night. It was the most eerie feeling of my life. I lost power at 3:30 am and didn't get it back for almost two months. It sounded like a train coming through for hours and I could here all my huge old oak trees slamming to the ground. I lived on the Trinity River up from Galveston and for months afterwards they flew up and down the river in helicopters looking for bodies. It was so sad and so surreal.

    I had just started my first semester at A&M Galveston when Ike hit. I grew up in the DFW area, so it was all so foreign and amazing to me. I lived in the old cinder block apartments on campus on pelican island, and was going to muscle through it. I’m glad they forced us to leave, because that whole island was under 8ft of water. That whole ordeal was so unbelievably humbling.

    Born & raised in Galveston county, but we left that area and moved permanently up to Central Texas to get away from that BS. I'll never forget the great hurricane evacuation in 2004, when they closed all roads, wouldn't let people go where they wanted to go and tried to force the population of the Houston/Galveston metropolitan area into a tiny town called Huntsville. We were trying to get to Laredo, where my husband's family lives. My mom & dad wanted to go to Austin, where my brother lives. It took us 48 hours to get to our destinations. The hurricane didn't even end up coming to our area. After that, we were fed up.

    I spent a lot of my childhood growing up in port bolivar which is a ferry ride across the ship channel from galveston. Inhave rode out 3 major hurricanes here and i knew when i saw the waves coming over the seawall in galveston the storm surge was gonna be a huge factor in damage . And it was. It wiped out the bolivar peninsula where i spent my whole childhood. It was so heart breaking to see that. My deceased mother loved that place alot. Im actually glad she wasnt here to see it.that seawall did exactly what it was designed to do . If it had not been there galveston would have been destroyed way worse than it was

    I remember Ike! We had to leave ahead of the storm to avoid the eye wall and ended up in a little hurricane party with relatives to ride out the storm together. The howling wind is something I will never forget. One of my clearest childhood memories is of trekking across waterlogged lawns to get to a house that still had power. Downed branches were everywhere and even some whole pine trees had fallen. I was only 7 at the time, but I was absolutely fascinated by it all. Seeing it all go down again is a trip and a half

Since we live in midtown the live view of the seawall is usually a more accurate depiction of the current weather, then the weather channel. 🤷‍♀️ While flipping through CZcams for the live shot of the seawall before I took off for the day, your video popped up. In response to why you leave...as for the reporting guys..it's a passion for them and I appreciate what they do...I can see what happened while I have no power and fixing my home falling down.
    The force of wind is one thing but water has a force that will kill you faster in my opinion... If I was in a place where my first floor would fill forcing me to the attic... I am leaving... there is nothing I can do but die in that... I live 25 miles inland and the surge wouldn't reach me ... the area may flood but not to my attic... the wind is the factor...and I had hurricane winds up to 110 mph-120 gusts I think higher..under the North, West and SW eyewall (never the eye )and bands over me for at least 6 hours. I stayed because in this storm as my roof was coming off I was able to poke holes in the ceiling to let water run into buckets unlike my neighbors that had it all collapse and lost everything and they were living in my house.. granted we had no power for 10 days no way in or out for 5 days... but I had a ceiling that didn't destroy all my belongings.... this is why I stay....

    • @JimEdds
      @JimEdds  Před rokem +9

      not everybody leaves. The decision is based on a lot of factors. Did you see all the people stuck in traffic for 10 hours around Houston in 2005 when Hurricane Rita approached? Some ran out of gas. Some tried to find motels that allowed pets to no avail. You might travel to a different state before you found a hotel. Some don't have the money. So whether you stay or go depends on your particular situation but whatever you do . . . do it early before the traffic jams and crowds. If you stay know the power and water may be out for days or weeks. It will be difficult living. Some want to stay to watch the house and other assets. If the storm surge can flood your home I think you have to go though. As you saw in the video there was a 17 foot seawall built to protect Galveston. However it started flooding from the north first - where they dredge to raise Galveston up after the 1900 Hurricane. But even 17 feet is not enough. It may be you cannot ever keep Galveston from flooding. Ike was a big Cat 2. What about a big diameter Cat 5? Katrina had 27.8 feet of storm surge in Waveland, MS. Whatever your decision is know what you are in for - staying or leaving are big decisions and you have to pick the least problematic one or the one that you deem the best for your family. So you see like many things in life - it's complicated. If you have evacuated before you say you'll never do that again. If you stay and it floods your house or the roof blows off you say I'll never stay again. That's what people have told me. Just make the decision early.

      As a Texan that grew up 17 miles from Galveston, I think in 42 years we left for one hurricane and that was it. A lot of the time it's too much trouble to pack up a lot of your stuff and sit in 18 hours of traffic just for a storm that might pass or hit and it might not even be that bad. It's definitely a risk, but after living in a place prone to tornadoes and hurricanes, honestly after like your second or third one it's just not a big deal. You'll take the chances.

    • @JimEdds
      @JimEdds  Před rokem +6

      I believe some of the fires were started by short circuit spark related. Some started and ignited the adjacent homes. It's not unusual to see fires in neighborhoods in storm surge high wind areas. If lines blow down they can still be live wire and spark. The spark can ignite material that burns easily and there it goes. Just another hazard that makes up what I call the Danger Zone. Thanks for watching!

    There is this one video of a storm chaser that says he see the Full Moon during the passage of the eye, do you remember seeing the Moon during some break of clouds in the eye?

      I think it was more like 26 ppl died and 40 or more unaccounted for. I live in Houston. I was in Galveston County Jail (the new one)when Ike hit.
