Being a dancer that doesn't have the "ballet body", I feel that she is a true role model not just for dancers but for every girl alive. I hope to see her on stage live someday.
being 5 foot 2, African american, starting at a late age, and not having the typical ballerina body wow... believe it of not but she is a very inspiring person breaking all these barriers, she lets young girls know that they can be anything they wish to be if they work hard
I know! This really inspires me because I've just started ballet a couple months ago and I'm 13 and everyone told me I would never be a principal dancer, or even on pointe, but this video really got me thinking
+Puckles 100 and you know this how?? Are you a geneticist? I've seen fairer skinned people with straighter hair than hers and they identify as black. You mad because she identifies as black and not "mixed"? Lots of mixed people identify as black because no matter how mixed they are, they know which side of the fence they're accepted by and belong to. And, that black is dominant in genes. FAIL! lmao
You only want her to be 50% Caucasian when she's successful. If she was any other African-American struggling, you wouldn't dare point out the Caucasian in her.
Lorraine Ashby can u do ballet at the age of 15 I stopped as a little girl but I love dance and I'm so scared to do it again because of how much time I've lost with ballet?
keke rezel Dear Keke I have never done ballet but my daughter started at 14 yrs with no prior training and was told she had the flexibility and musicality. I searched the internet for some information and someone else asked the same question and they were considerably older than you and the word 'flexibility' seemed to be of key importance. Keke don't be scared - what have you got to lose; if you don't try then you will never know, plus it depends on whether you want to do it as an interest or a career and how determined you are. If I were you I would call a ballet school and talk to someone who can give you some good advice - at least it's a step in the right direction. If it it really in your heart to dance then take that first step - I wish you all the very best and hope everything works out for you ~ regards Lorraine :o)
keke rezel I can tell that this means a lot to you - I am not a dancer but I love to sing and it is something that is a part of you and always will be ~ regards Lorraine :o)
I absolutely LOVE dance! I had my first tap recital earlier this month and it was so fun! =D And I have been complimented on my dancing :) I do hope that mean I've improved I sure feel like i have
As a former pro ballet dancer, I had her body and was always at war with it! It's time for a change in classical ballet --- it's a new era and the art form has to evolve or die. Misty exemplifies every aspect of what's great about this evolution.
I remember when I first saw this video. I was a little girl feeling ostracised and alone by the other girls at my dance school because I was different. Only my love of dance kept me coming back. I don't dance anymore, but this video taught me to trust in myself to be my own artist and understand my self worth. It helped me through the times where I felt invisible and underappreciated, thankyou Misty Copeland you are truly an amazing role model!
I remember a story she told that served as an example of the racism that exists in ballet that so much a part of that culture that people sometimes brazen about it, or lack the basic introspection that it would take to think about their expectations. Some time back, her company was doing Swan Lake and the girls were told not to let themselves get darker, rather they had to avoid the sun at all costs because they needed to be as pale as possible. Great message to send.
Being in the corps de ballet is about uniformity, thats why they all wear the same costume and same hairdo etc. Skin tone is to be same so as not to call attention to any one person in particular but to have the dancers in unison in the choreography. If a dancer does not fit into the corps than they better have something extra special so they can get soloist or principal dancer parts. It just so happens that ballet has origins in white culture. It's not about racism. If a person stands out in body type as well, they may not be able to cut it as a professional ballet dancer. There are many variables involved, its not about racism.
Such poise, beauty, strength and intelligence. Miss Copeland has been uplifted as a revolutionary wonder but she has actually been a champion of the conservation of a classical art form helping the public see the power and majesty in traditional arts.
Such an inspiration to future generations! She displays such grace and beauty when she performs and speaks the truth in correlation to classical ballet maintaining its foundational roots: purity, it is untainted. That's a rarity in modern day society.
I feel inspired by her, I just read her story in Teen Vogue. And now tht I know her story, I feel my worries slip away, little by little, because I've seen someone like me, achieve something so grand, like her.
This video is a true inspiration to me. I started taking ballet very seriously last year, and started giong to a serious ballet school. I found out all that I didn't know and and I was soooo discouraged but I eventually got better and better even though SOOOO many people said very rude things to me about my desision to be serious about dance. They said "what good would ballet do for you" or "I hope in 15 years your not disappointed with all the time you spent all on ballet. Even though these things hurt, I proced forward. I have Ben told so many times that you have to have this you have to have that to be a good ballet dancer. Now I know in order to be a true artist you can work with what you have and make it wonderful like this brilliant artist. I may not be the best. I may have trouble with a few steps. But every day I go to class I feel myself improve and am one step closer to becoming a professional dancer.
She is marvellous! Her entire body is just #goals . It's been several years since this vid and i'm so glad her life has blossomed. Go Misty! An inspiration to us all.
i know she may not have the ideal body for a professional ballerina (which is odd because she has an amazing body, just not at the typical standards), but her hard work and passion for ballet are definitely things to admire, she's definitely an inspiration to me
This woman is extraordinary! From her natural talent to her passion, to her drive... Watching Misty dance is like watching the most beautiful poetry come to life. Honestly my biggest inspiration and role model at this moment.
You give hope to so many...Misty you such wonderful inspiration and so graceful when you dance...what energy you send as we watch you dance...good job Misty...
Watching her dance is like watching Roger Federer play tennis. Both perfect technicians one can't imagine were born to do anything other than what they do.
Melissa Carlill , well stated. Not sure your age or genre of film interest, however the finale' of this clip reminded me very much of a scene from the movie "FLASH DANCE" with Jennifer Beals in the eighties. Another mullata sistah' , quite, attractive as well who also had the honed gift of extra-ordinarily ELOQUENT PHYSICAL expression through , balanced, precise, energetic and integrated movement.
She's so different to other ballet dancers in so many ways... AND THAT'S WHY I LOVE HER! It's impossible not to keep watching her, so strong and gracefull, just look at those jumps!! just beautiful...
I love her! For so long I've been trying to find myself as a dancer and what she said is spot on. Dance should be all about you and your personality. Don't let the fear of being embarrassed or judged by others hold you back from your dreams. GO FOR IT!
What great words on being an artist! She dances with such joy, grace and attack. I absolutely love her! Her proportions are beautiful, she seems much taller.
I always say, tell the truth. Misty Copeland also needs to say she's German and Italian, I love how when someone is part Black, they just say Black instead of what they truly are. They are mixed, so tell the truth, you're not only Black, you're also German and Italian, it cracks me up....
whats so wrong about being different? Thats the point. you have to realize that ballet is no longer being restricted to white stick figures. Its moving forward. She's amazing. Point blank. She's had to work her butt off to get into the American Ballet Theatre only doing dance since the age of 13. Stop being so freaking negative all the time

Watching this makes me want to put my pointe shoes on right now and just start dancing! I love when people talk about dance this way: as an art form and means of expression, and not just about lines and pictures and flexibility. Because dance is so much more than that, and Misty expressed it beautifully. She's gorgeous!

This young woman is amazing. I am going to see her next season at the Met. I am just waiting for her to get her well deserved promotion. She should be dancing the role of The White Swan.
I struggled last year I gave up dance ive only been dancing since I was a freshmen.... I understand now thank you so much... I know where my passion lies with dance
HOLY CRAP!!! I had chills this whole video and I wasn't really watching... Just her words captivated me! WOW! Then I replayed it and watched... now I'm speachless!
She started at 13! That is incredible. What an inspiration
Jax B She's amazing! And only a year after of starting ballet she was already on pointe and taking part in competitions
@Laura Streeter Obviously they couldn't be that horrible she is a principle dancer. Many women who started at 3 couldn't even achieve that 😘
I started at 3

Michael Z Martin I was more interested in what she had to say about ballet and how it always remains constant even when everything around it changes

Teenagers Scare Me do you do ballet?
She's only 5'2"? She comes off as much taller.
Yeah, those legs!
Part of it is probably due to her being on pointe all the time.
All them legs

What's not to love about this amazing woman? What a beautiful soul.
And how wonderful is it that she's now a Principal at ABT?!
I saw her perform with Marcelo Gomes in Liam Scarlett's With A Chance Of Rain. She and Marcelo smoked that stage.....
How many times can I Like this?? Her artistry, technique and form are breathtaking. She has incredible heart-- and form.
How can you NOT like this?! Her lines... her body... her EVERYTHING! Shes amazing...
she is so beautiful :-)
did anyone else catch that she was doing bluebird?? i love that variation so much
she is gorgeous and says inspirational things. Long live classic ballet.
Such a BEAUTIFUL human being inside and out and a fantastic ballerina. Thanks for Posting this

People now enjoy seeing dancers with meat in their bones. Congrats Misty, you deserve it PRIMA BALLERINA!!
she is one of my favorites! she is so strong and graceful and pure and sincere !
she is absolutely magnificent

That's BEAUTIFUL Olivia. Keep the FAITH as whatever you want The Most High wants you 2 have AND THEN SOME. Shalom ballerina.
I am not the dancer shape myself, but I am a jazz, tap, and ballet dancer who will be starting lyrical soon. Do what you feel you are meant to do, no matter what.

I love how she feels about dancing in this video. She's such a smart and talented young lady.
What's the name of the background music??
She's articulating the 'X' factor... which knows no rules. You either have it or you don't.
Oh my God. She actually gives me so much hope! I started when I was 13 too, she is such an amazing inspiration. When she dances, it's just..effortless!
My favorite! So stunning!
Beautiful, but I believe that if she were not biracial she would have an even harder time getting recognition.
Marilyn Malcolm Misty identifies herself purely as african-american, and her challenges and treatment in the ballet world certainly reflected that. She refuses to be identified as anything but African-American. Her choice. Hell, all African Americans are biracial if you want to get technical about.

Fanny Arnars I'm 157 cm tall and I'm only 10!
***** Okay?
Fanny Arnars oh my god, really? I tought she was taller :O
This is the most inspiration video I've ever watched. Thank you misty and Anaheim Ballet.
what a role model to me, and everyone else who is a ballet dancer! your an amazing dancer Misty!!!! I'll always being looking up to you now.
I want to be a professional ballet dancer when I get older, I'm 12. But I don't have enough confidence..:(
+Mermaid Laura
Just Do It...
Yep...
Talent and a work ethic are enough most of the time. Forget people. Let the music take you where you need to go.
you can do it!! Misty started when she was 13; if you have determination and are very passionate about ballet you will go very far. Just believe in yourself :)
shut up, and get to work; you can do it !
There is nothing called luck in dance you just work hard to get to the spotlight
She is an inspiration to all.
She is beautiful! Her extensions, jumps and feeeet are amazing.
yo!! all these recent posts are crazy! ys'll r being haters! how could u not love this girl?
She looks much healthier than Svetlana does
Racist
Her words and her dancing are truly inspirational.
Oh my goodness! She is so talented! Every spin and turn is so graceful. Please make more videos.
Is she popular because shes good, or because shes mixed race? She speaks very inspiring, so thats pretty much why I dont mind the hype. But still.
Because she was the first African American principle in ABT.
Sorry *soloist
She popular because she is an accomplished dancer and broke through the barriers with hard work. It seems you would have already checked her dancing out before asking an ignorant and obvious racist comment.
