It’s so cringe that they’re still making jokes of men in ballet. Grow up - or maybe they’re just outdated. Misty Copeland is amazing they really dropped the ball on an amazing opportunity
I mean...Jimmy Kimmel got his start on a show called "The Man Show" which started with a woman with big breasts jumping on a trampoline in slow motion. He's a totally immature misogynist.

@pia3652 I don't know if you're a dancer, but what he meant is that this was a great opportunity to give more ofnthe REAL ballet world to the public, whereas they gave a lot of stereotypes instead. I do appreciate that Misty Copeland made ot clear THE WHOLE TIME that she wasn't approving that, and she was just doing her job in the most professional way. Actually she treated them like dancers are treated most of the time, and I like that compared to other cringe "professional ballerina teaches ballet to grownup men" she wasn't pleasing or laughing alongside. Actually in general the show madebit clear that that was COMEDIC and PARODIC, which is a lot better than pretending ballet world actually looks like this.
However, ballet is not only an art, but a real niche of people that differ completely from the rest of the world in the way they train, think and interact. It is appropriate for me to talk about ballet CULTURE: because yes, ballet world has its own culture and obviously people outside aren't to be blamed for not knowing it, but they also should not be misrepresenting it. The same way ethnic cultures nowadays ask to not be misrepresented by foreign media, art cultures also need that.
To get more specific, ballet already has the stereotype to many of being a feminine thing, that straight men aren't meant to do. This can't be further from truth: baller actually has a strict and distinct division between male and female dancers, they have different techniques, wear different clothes, do different roles. Men in ballet, regardless of their sex orientation, are required to act and look masculine, they wear clothes that emphasize the masculinity by showing the muscles in the legs and accentuating the wide shoulders and if involved in any romantic story, it's always with a woman. This does NOT mean that gays can't do ballet, it just means that the art requires that from all men. The elegance, lightness and softness often give the effect of a "feminine" movement, but if you compare how men and women dance it's completely different. Men are more athletic, jump generally higher, and last but not least they partner the ballerinas, meaning the handle them and lift them around. The work of a male dancer in general requires an incredible streght and most male dancers are regularly in the gym.
So if you want to put random men in the position of learning and experiencing ballet, teach them the reality of how ballet actually is for male dancers. Already wearing a dance belt, tights and a tight t-shirt, and having to to all those athleticisms is hard and can be embarrassing for who isn't used to it. But by doing what men do in ballet, they would feel more involved and it would be more meaningful to the experience. Obviously this DOES NOT apply in the case a man specifically wants to try to feel like a female ballerina, than that's legitimate. But teaching ballet to men, by making them wear tutus and move like girls while implying that is part of the job of a dancer, just makes them look ridiculous, and ballet itself through them. And ballet needs so many other things than looking ridiculous to the public.
I am a male professional ballet dancer, and have never worn a tutu, never tried on point shoes. Ballet world does not require that, and traditional repertoire does not allow it. Obviously everyone has the freedom to do what they want, but let's not pretend like this is ballet normality.
@@pia3652 If that was their motivation they would have dressed appropriately and known not to go eat a heavy meal right beforehand. The gendered choice of outfit was an obvious attempt to make it a joke (which backfired because Misty was so gracious they just looked disrespectful).

I feel SO sorry for Misty! I feel like her company volunteered her for the "skit", and all the way through it, she's secretly thinking: "they are NOT paying me enough for this".

You have to look at it with an open mind (though my heat sunk a couples of times😨), I also believe the 3 of them did their best to have a good time. After all life is about that too.

@@emhu2594 I agree with you. I'm fairly certain that Misty was told this wasn't to be taken seriously. Otherwise, Jimmy wouldn't have televised it from the beginning. He would have taken lessons and tried to be as good as possible before showing the world.

I feel like this was kinda a slap in the face to Misty. I mean how many people would give anything to have the opportunity to have a private class with Misty? I haven't danced in years and would jump at the opportunity. Then to bring two guys in who make it look like ballet is nothing but a big joke it's almost insulting. She was clearly not amused by this. Still the amount of grace she help herself with was incredible. So many times she forced a smile when all she wanted to do was cringe. Misty is awesome all around.

I think the most upsetting part is that we baller people have our own ballet culture, and they are misrepresenting it. As well as ethnical cultures should not be misrepresented, ballet culture also shouldn't.
I will give anything for a private lesson with Misty, but this was a miss opportunity this “joke” about men in 🩰 is not true. Men in ballet quite athletic.
lighten up! no one was belittling her or the art! How many times have you gone to a ballet shows that featured a comedic sketch among the featured performances? or have you? This was a scheduled guest comedic sketch added into the evenings performance that's why Kimmel was in New York City.

I absolutely love Misty Copeland so much. As a black dancer myself growing up she has made me feel seen and validated when others have tried to knock me down in the ballet world because of my skin color.
I also thought about making a living out of dancing, but that wasn't possible and wouldn't fit other goals I had in life.
However, I'm always happy when I'm prooven wrong, like seing ballerinas still performing at theirs 70s, mans dancers performing on pointes, people starting ballet in their 20's and be cometting enough to be on pointes... Those are few things I heard my teachers said it wasn't possible during clases. And I believed them. 🥺

I stopped ballet in 2007 before YAGP but Misty Copeland has given me the confidence to get back into ballet again. I got back into ballet two years ago and even went back en pointe.

I'm not even a dancer (I'm a harpist!), but I love ballet and your content so much, Josephine! I'm glad you gave Jimmy and co the light roasting they deserved for this performance, haha. Really wish they could have taken it more seriously, but Misty was such a good sport and gracious teacher.

Definitely. I'm open to them starting with a joke and then parlaying it into a lesson on the male aesthetic (i.e. hand them leggings and a costumed top.). They can still go foppish.
Absolutely agree. Or if they really want to feel the magic of ballet, give them a costume for male dancers, such as tights and a nice top or shirt

I agree about the fact that so much fun is poked at male dancers. I remember a great video, which was the Kilted Coaches ballet part 3. It was so refreshing to see the respect they gave to the skill and strength of the dancers

She legit sounded annoyed when she said “it should look easy. That’s why we train hours and hours for our whole lives” it’s really rubbing me wrong that they made a joke of men in ballet AND a mockery of/wasted the time of an amazing black dancer.
I’m 69 and it’s been 50 years since my last ballet lesson. I’ve recently started doing beginner senior barre lessons on CZcams and have to admit that this video has been really good for my ego 🤣 although I remember enough to know how very terrible I am. But whatever, it’s extremely fun. Here’s to all the senior ballerinas!

@@emanuelebabici Thank you so much! I walk and do easy aerobic classes with no jumping on alternate days with two days off a week. I try to do the ballet lessons after my walks. It’s hard to stay disciplined and I’m not always successful. Oh well.

@@Imgone2024 One of them is Ballet for Seniors Express Barre by the Queensland Ballet. If you search for senior ballet or beginner ballet there’s more. I can’t do the more advanced movements in some of them because it’s not safe. So I just stop at that point. Have fun!
I'm a teenage ballet student but my parents started a ballet class this year because, in my dad's words, "I'm gonna be watching it for at least 3 more years so I might as well know what's going on". He's always complaining to me about how sore he is after class and I'm like "now you know how I feel!"
I love that they hired all the dancers and live musicians for the final performance.

I have read the comments here and people were totally offended. I am 66 and know nothing of ballet other than i love to watch it and listen to all the other dancers with their you tube chanels. I think misty would have definitely been totally in on this as these skits are well prepared on these shows. Josephine, they made you laugh so just enjoy the tongue in cheek. Ballet dancers are the fittest athletes on the planet and i think if anything this skit just proves that. Relax and enjoy people and takd this for what it is.

I've come to this conclusion that when people mock or make fun of men in ballet, they only succeed in embarrassing themselves. Misty is a better person than me. I almost couldn't watch this from the sheer cringe of it all.
No, sadly they also succeed in misrepresenting ballet and it's culture. I'm a male ballet dancer and I've been asked hundreds if times if I wear tutu and pointshoes. At least in tge Western world, people have a distorted idea of ballet, and they're not helping

I have just found your channel and I get great enjoyment from all of your comments. As a 62 year old, who loved dance and can no longer do so due to osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, seeing beautiful dancers with beautiful feet is exciting to me. I dream of putting on my pointe shoes again and grasping on to my kitchen island for dear life just to get that rush of adrenaline when one stands tall and strong. Gosh your reactions are just so good. Sweetie keep making my day. I laugh with you on many occasions through shock and bewilderment at the antics of the participants in the videos. Ballet can be too serious a discipline, to fool around or break free in class. When it happens it is a joy.

Adult ballet classes do exist in many places! And I believe American Ballet Theater offers virtual classes for a variety of levels.

Misty Copeland obviously was in on the skit and she played it perfectly. It wasn’t meant to be a serious ballet lesson. Does everyone else here believe she was somehow set up or blindsided with this? C’mon guys, really!?! That said, she was lovely and amazing, as always.

I'd so be here for Ballerinos. Why do women get to be ballerinas but men who dance ballet are just, dancers? I think that's some valid commentary. Especially with the push for wider acceptance of men doing pointe work in roles that aren't exclusively comedic, I feel like there needs to be a better term than "ballet bros" or "dancer" because doing pointe work is so much more than "just dancing".
Yea and in Italian ballerino always existed, I'm a ballerino per say, and it just means "professional male ballet dancer". Ballerina in languages that are not Italian means "female principal dancer", and they could use ballerino to indicate "male principal dancer". Point shoes don't egen matter in the debate, ballerino is just the masculine for ballerina in Italian

Josephine, as you're from korean descent you might be able to watch some korean content so I'm saying this : thankfully in Korea men doing ballet (and figure skating for what it's worth) are represented as super manly strong males on tv ! Which is exactly WHAT THEY ARE ! Also you must know that lots of korean men are shining on the international scene as principal dancers, and since korea likes their 국뽕 a lot, they're even more loved for what they do. You should try to watch 아이언빈 윤성빈's video of him trying ballet. He tries ballet with another female gym athlete (instructed by a ballet pro couple) and it's HILARIOUS lol

I love Misty Copeland. I just finished reading the book about her and her life is so interesting,, and I'm very happy that she is a pro ballet dancer now and she made it.
Misty Copeland is beautiful, she was on the Late Show With Stephen Colbert in 2015, she danced to a Bach cello piece played by Yo Yo Ma and then had an interview with Colbert about diversity in dance.

Wow, Misty has a food sense of humor and love of ballet. She teied very hard to jeep ut together. There were some interesting not too bad moments where the effort was shown by these two men. Misty us a geeat teacher full of grace
I saw this a while ago. I found it disrespectful to Misty. She didn’t let them off the hook, though.
She behaved absolutely in the best way. Just like a ballet teacher would act to a 10yo that isn't well behaved, and in some cases just how ballet dancers are treated. She was very professional and didn't laugh alongside or act pleasing

Absolutely. And do an actual real 1st grade or 2nd grade full class, including jumping for half an hour. Then the smile would go down a bit.
Plus: while wearing tights and a dance belt they would probably feel just as uncomfortable 😂
They need a strick teacher who dowsnt laugh at stupid jokes and orders them to take off those horrible costumes and show what the true ballet class is like, and if they are acting like it is a big joke, they are out.

Can I be an old lady for a moment? Things need to change of course , but I do see changes since I was coming up. My friend and I were pulled aside after ballet class and subtly discouraged from continuing to pointe. Modern dance was offered as an alternative. I don’t have any particular talent, passion or dedication, but my friend was a prodigy compared to the rest of us. I can’t hold a combination in my head to save my life while she never needed to be told more than once (I just used to do whatever she did, so I was perpetually half a second off). She was everything I thought a young ballerina should be. She’s African American, I’m Asian American. I think the teacher thought she was being kind, heading us off from careers with no future, in the world as it was at the time. I did give it up for years but finally made it into beginner pointe class in my twenties. This was way back before adult ballet classes for beginners were common, so it was me, the middle schoolers, and my friend the teacher who about killed herself laughing when she described it at dinner that weekend. My childhood friend went on to modern dance in college. I think she must have danced on pointe at some time. She would have killed it.
As an opera singer, I run into the same thing. People just making fun of it, rather than being serious about the art form.

My optimistic take is that they know they could never be graceful or lovely at ballet and that's the joke part but I really really want to believe they respect her skill and grace.

as much as i'm always happy to see Misty, i think this kind of skit would have worked better for me if they had used a male dancer for teacher, cause then Jimmy and Guillermo could have done the same bit with their tutus and stuff, but the audience who may still hold that prejudice against men in ballet would have also gotten to see what it actually looks like when a man dances

In German we have the word "Fremdschämen" - you cringe about what others do -- that was really the case here about Jimmy and Guillermo.
I found this disrespectful. Misty was more gracious and good-humored than they deserved. I was surprised at how decent Jimmy was and I appreciated that they didn't entirely goof off in the class. Like they tried, not very well, but they could have given her a really hard time. And I noticed that they did not stop dancing in the performance, even though they were not doing all the right steps. But it would have been better to have them wear male ballet clothes and be taught by a male dancer, I think.
Yea I'd say at least the show tried to make it clear that it's all nonsense, they were literally dancing next to male dancers dressed as males, but still these misrepresentations don't help our world and make me mad

I think Misty was in on the joke the whole time. Jimmy Kimmel is 1st and foremost, a comedian. I believe they were making fun of themselves not ballet. They are complete opposite of ballet. By juxtaposing their ineptness against the beauty and skill shows that ballet is an enjoyable art that many may enjoy if they take a closer look at it. This was a beautiful collaboration. Each artist bringing their skill to the match. Misty's comment at the end was hilarious. Ballet born in Itay ... died here today. She is a highly skilled ballerina and she is a great commidian with that last line. I would love to see the out takes because they were all laughing that day!!! Misty's is too good to be bothered by this.

Hi I am never over the box on my pointe shoes even tho my teachers say I have hood and strong feet my teachers always make me get new shoes and change their options on diffrent aspects with every pair. It costs to much and I hate getting fitted for a different pair each time I’m frustrated and just fully convinced it’s just not being strong enough because I’ve tried almost every show I’m going to keep trying to get stronger feet but I don’t know what to do with my shoes. I really like baroques but my teachers said the vamp was too high so I got the smart pointes but I can’t get over the box! I have no idea what to do I just feel like giving up
it would be cool to see a male dancer do something like this it might take some of the mockery out of it also lord someone give him a dancers belt
Jimmy Kimmel is a comedian. She agreed to do a segment on a comedians night time talk show. So no one should be expected to take themselves so seriously. She might want to become a brand and not just a too class world elite prima ballerina.
