He’s extremely technically gifted and he had an incredible season scoring hat tricks in multiple games. Unfortunately only being at city w pep has groomed him to be a system player in a very specific squad and without being in the perfect position he gets nullified and ineffective so quickly.
Its become evident that Palmer is actually so clear of Foden. I do rate Foden though but Palmer is a level above.
Foden just suits City because of the manager and his team mates. Foden clearly is a class act, but I'm taking PALMER in a heart beat. One players needs a system and team mates to compliment him and the other one does not care about the occasion and just want to ball out!!!!!

@Tigerheiress the 1st team, yes. But pep system is what every level of City plays. The system doesn't produce one type of player. This is the same 1st team, Mahrez, Leroy Sane, Raheem sterling etc plays under.
Palmer is silky af, sees a pass and isn't scared to shoot or misplace a pass. That's the difference, they are both good but Palmer releases the ball way more than Foden.

I think this comes down to Pep demanding constant perfection from his players. Foden is probably more fearful to misplace a pass or shot where as Palmer is given the freedom to play as he pleases in a system that relies so heavily on his quality.

Foden used to be more like Palmer in his willingness to carry the ball, take players on and make things happen. Unfortunately, Pep has coached that out of him and he's become a system player. I think Palmer perhaps has more natural ability than Foden, but Foden is still an exceptional talent who could be doing a lot more in my opinion. Palmer absolutely made the right decision to leave Man City.
Totally agree about the way Pep coaches natural excitement out of players . They've just signed Savinho and he'll be passing sideways and backwards before long .

It's not true that Pep is coaching their natural ability out of them. It's just this season they haven't been at their level and it's reflecting in their international matches. It was just last season when City won the treble. Now they're transition and they might come back way stronger next season. I'd say some players don't fit in a Pep system and style of play and some do and they do very well. And that happens everywhere even at Man United.
Id say palmer is as good as Bellingham but he hasn't got the hype machine behind him yet

ok what is this magical system that foden can only operate under? the only tactical difference is that he had a pressing forward that gave him some space. keep in mind that defenders have more of an eye on him because he is literally the PL player of the year. when palmer comes on, they are not expecting him to do much or do anything because of his different style of play. same would happen if it was foden hoping off the bench. coming off the bench gives you this inclination to prove urself to the coach hence making u an unexpected threat. idt the bench would do any better than the starting eleven if they started.

For this high level of football and under Southgate it’s easier to come on a sub rather than start. Foden is the more accomplished and polished player but Palmer has potential
You could say this about 8 or 9 other players in the starting lineup. Most just don't turn up internationally. It's been the same in Sven's era, same in most other eras.

Foden is just a side kick earning glory alongside top names at City. Palmer is on the other hand shouldered Chelsea on his own last season. City made a massive Error with selling Palmer. Also Southgate relied on Foden saw him as a saviour and faced the consequences. Foden is not what he assumed he isnt the new Gascoigne. Foden is ordinary. Palmer is a million miles better player.

Pace and heading maybe his most visible weaknesses but truly what sets him apart from his contemporaries is that his confidence/arrogance (fine line) is through the charts. You can't say that based on that small sample from the euros. He was better than Foden there. Even though he only played about an hour. He was more important for Chelsea, but that is because City is littered with stars. Chelsea didn't have one effective attacking player before he came.
That's another reason why Palmer is better though. Not only the Euros. He scored 23 PL goals in an absolute mess of a team with no Identity.

Palmer a pure footballer. His style of play more versatile, Foden seems more system based. He is a good player nevertheless, but Palmer a lot more versatile and creative. England will never win anything unless we train up youngsters to be able to play with both feet, to be able to play in a range of different positions, to be able to dribble past players, to be more tactically aware, to be more pressing, to appoint a manager who has actually won something (or preferably multiple trophies, especially CLs, Euros and World Cups) and who can get England playing like an actual team as opposed to a group of individuals, and who can get England playing attacking football, not passing it sideways and back to the keeper.
We also need fans and the media to stop saying "It's coming home" from the first match of a tournament (or even before the first match). The only time they should be allowed to say that is AFTER England has actually won a tournament.
