- Kia won’t shift out of park FIXED!
Is your Kia stuck in park? Will your Kia not shift out of park when you hit the brakes? Cars with an automatic transmission have safety mechanism that when you don’t press the brake, you can’t shift out of park. This 2010 Kia Forte Koup SX wouldn’t shift out of park when pressing the brake though. It could be a couple different things that aren’t working. Since in is an electrical solenoid that engages the shift lock release, it is looking for an electrical signal from the brake pedal sensor. If that sensor is not working, the shift lock release will not engage on your Kia and you’ll be stuck in park. There is a very easy way to check that though. Have someone press the brakes while you check if your brake lights come on. If they come on, it likely won’t be your brake pedal sensor.
You could also try to listen for a clicking noise by the shifter when press the brake pedal on your Kia. If you do, you’re lucky. I heard that on this car. That meant the shift lock release solenoid is working and it might be a free fix. Free fixes are my favourite by the way.
So, on this car, it was just a screw from that shift lock release solenoid that came lose. But to know how to get shifter unstuck in a Kia, you better just watch the video. If you have the same problem and you follow what I do, you won’t have to worry about can’t shift into gear in Kia. Enjoy the Video!

Channel Overview:
In this channel I will show how to repair your vehicle or other vehicles yourself. I will also show you, teach you some trick what to look for at certain jobs and try to explain the best I can, on why I do it the way I do it. You will see links of the most of the tools and the parts, at good quality and reasonable cost, that I am using in the description of every video (It may be not the exact tool or product, but that has the same function. So, it may be just a different brand). If any torque specs or other specs are mentioned in the video, they will also be found in the description. I am a self-employed mechanic myself, with a garage on my property. So here I am recording how I repair and trying to help you repair your customer vehicles and also how to fix your own vehicle and save a lot of dollars. So, every video is intended to be a great ‘Do It Yourself (DIY)’ tutorial to save money.

How to take it apart would be helpful
Did you watch the whole video? I try to explain how to take it apart when I put it back together. It sure would be helpful seeing how it comes apart.
Watch how he puts it back together at the end to figure out how to pull it off
The same thing happened to my KIA (2010 Forte) for the first time yesterday, this video helped save the trip to the KIA dealership service place. Thank you so much for the details explanation, straightforward to follow.
Thank you so much for the compliment. I'm really glad I was able to help you out that way. May God bless you further on
Had this exact problem, did exacty as you did, screw was loose, tightened everything back up and was good to go! No trips to mechanic, my daughter was thrilled! Thank you.
Hey, that is awesome. I'm glad it helped you out 👍

Thank you so much for this video! A huge help, everything done on my own under an hour with no body shop.
That's nice.
Thanks for the video! My teenage son got an excellent lesson. The shop wanted $899. + tax to repair. We ordered the part ($25) and completed the repair on Kia Forte 2010 - "Frank" - in less than 20 mins after arrival.
Awesome. Thanks for sharing. That's so good to hear. God bless you
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY And May God bless You!
Thanks for showing where all the bolts and screws. I was stuck on reverse @Walmart. Had to borrow their 10mm socket wrench. Its just the shifter clips on mine. $6.99+tax for E-clips at O'Reilly. Thanks again
That's inconvenient. At least they borrowed you a socket. Seems you got away fairly cheap. 👍
I really appreciate you and your video. I ran into this problem last weekend and immediately I Google search the issues then the part. Also tried go and purchase the part at a local automotive store and turns out it's a dealership part. So then I go home and Google again, then came across your video. I also had a loose screw and I also had a 2nd screw missing that was in the corner near the carpet.
Thanks again for your video and sharing it with us
Hey, your welcome. Thanks for sharing you struggle. CZcams is a great thing isn't it. God bless you.
Thank you so much for the video. Saved me some money. God bless you brother!
Thank you brother. God bless you too.
I appreciate your video. I must say It’s very helpful. I haven’t gotten to it yet but I’m looking at the same car only a year newer. The automatic gear shifter stopped shifting and got stuck in drive. I’ll let you know what happens….
Thanks. I would imagine it would be something different though. Usually you can always put the shifter in neutral without pressing the brake. But let me know what you find out.
Thanks for the video, this solved my issue!!!
Happy to hear that
Great job buddy
It will definitely help us
Thank You
Thanks. Good luck with your project
Thank you so much you're a blessing!
Thank you. Glad I could help. May God bless you too 😉
I love that all you need is a Phillips head screwdriver and a 10 mm ratchet.
That is pretty cool eh.
I have a Kia Sorento 2011 with the same problem, i'm going to check this solution.
thanks.
Your welcome. Hopefully it helps 🤞
Nice concept. I like this. Keep it up
Thanks, I'll try 😉

Very Good Video, Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
Dude you are the fuckin man. Went to dealership for recalls on my 2010 Kia Forte recently. They needed to remove the center console to do the recalls. My shifter started acting janky right after. They wanted $525 for a new shifter because the shift lock release was loose. I watched this video and fixed it myself. Thank you so much!!!
Oh wow. I guess that was the main idea of the channel. Thank you
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY Sincerely appreciate it!
Fantastic. I'll try it in the morning
Best of luck to you 🤞
This seems to be my issue... I'm gonna check my solenoid, and if this is the issue I will like and subscribe in a heartbeat
So, was that the issue? You got me all ear now 👂
My car has been on an hill broken down from a map sensor that was replaced and fixed . Died in reverse , got it out of reverse and started but now it won't shift out of park even if I press on brake .. I fixed the shift lock release thing and still won't move. Is it possibly locked into park since its been on a hill for so long ?
Is the shift lock release module working though? Did you make sure it pulls down the little lever?
Can you make a video showing how to remove the rear dash on a 2011 kia forte koup.
Thanks for watching this video. This car is one of my customers. So I can't unfortunate. What is the issue that you have though?
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY I have extreme rattling from the rear dash on my 2011 kia forte koup sx... It's annoying. I just wanted someone to make a video because there seems to be a shortage of repair vids pertaining to the Kia Brand in general. Thanks for the reply.
@@onireno oh, that must be annoying. Good luck finding something 👌
What is the replacement part number I've got the same issue and replaced with a clip but it didn't last but a few months before it slipped
Oh that's too bad. If you have a4 speed transmission, check this out: amzn.to/3EWho1q.
If you have a 6 speed, check this out: amzn.to/3i9nbqB
Thanks for watching and best luck.
Would that affect my dash lights My dash lights won't go on and the car is in lock, I keep using a key to press the button to unlock but dash lights won't go on.
I wouldn't think so.
Does this applies to kia rondo as well? I got mine stuck in park.
I'm not sure. You'd have to take it apart and see. And then come back let us know for any people in the future looking for it.
Would this fix also apply to a 2014 Kia Optima?
If you just put the hand on the shifter and press the brake while the key is on, you should hear or feel the solenoid click by the shifter. If you hear nothing, then it might be your solenoid or your break switch. If you do here click, then it might be the same issue.
Can this help if the car is atuck in neutral? The shifter moves but its stuck in neutral and wont change gears.
I think it would be more likely to be shift cable that may have come loose 🤷♂️
What if the transmission stuck in drive, but the gear shifter still move up and down, but it still stays in drive. The vehicle does not go in Nutral or Park. What can cause that problem
Hey thanks for asking. It sounds like the linkage is unhooked either at the shifter or the transmission.
Quick question what if it's the same problem and the car won't start and v the break paddle won't go to far down. I'm about to give this a try
I'm not quite sure what you mean. But I would definitely try this. And if it doesn't work let me know.
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY It worked. Before this the car would not start and the shifter was stuck in park. My next question would be what to do to make sure that this doesn't happen again. Can I use electric tape or is there something else that can be cone.
Great 💪 You could try electric tape. But before putting it all back together, make sure it still works. You could also put some thread locked or lock tite on the threads before threading in the screw.
Would a 2010 kia shortage 2.4 fit in a 2010 kia forte koup also has a 2.4?
I don't know. But if you call a kia dealer, they should tell you. That what I usually do if I'm wondering if something it's interchangeable.
So by liking my question does that mean it would work?
No Haha. I just appreciate the interaction on my video.
What camera are you using?
My cell phone, a Samsung note 8 and an old Panasonic Lumix GH2.
If i have a stick shift and its stuck in reverse/First. Is This likely this is the problem??
I think that would be something different. Because a stick is build differently than an automatic.
Find where the shift linkage connect under the hood and disconnect them. If you can now move the shifter freely, the shifter is fine and you have an issue with the transmission.
If you still can't move your shifter, then you'll likely have an issue with the linkage.
Good luck! 🍀
Disculpe mi troca si se mueve la palanca solo no da parking ni reversal nada solo D que podrá tener
Check your shift cable. It may be broken. God bless you
Hello! What happend if I press the shift and the screen don't go down?
What screen are you talking about?
Will this be the same for 2011 optima
I couldn't tell you. But it very well might be if you have the same symptoms
The Kia Optima should have just been the bushing on the transmission linkage cable
Thanks
Watch how he puts it back together to know how he took it off. Trying to walk my DIL thru this right now
Chicks who work on cars rock!
That's right and good luck
Yes I can do this myself 😜
💪
How did you remove the center console? I cant get mine out to replace the part
What is your exact problem?
If you watch the complete video, you can see all the screws that I had removed and am tightening. If you remove those, the center console should come out no problem.
I just realized I should of filmed the whole thing when I had it all apart. And since I was in a rush to get done for the customer, I didn't have time to record a removal procedure.
I hope this will help you out. So just watch the complete video and if you have any more questions, let me know.
Make sure you remove the little cover below the E-brake too! I did have to give it a really good pull to get it loose and moving.
👍👍👍
Thanks. Hope your good to shift now
I had to do this to my Corolla. Not the same car, but Amazon had the bushing's needed so yeah just get in there and tear out the center console. Easy 15 dollar fix.
Nice. Good job. Must have felt good when done 💪
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY You had no idea I pulled it out and went to work with console open to place the barring into the shifter until it arrived. Greased and fixed. Appreciate the idea of the cables.
Haha. That's great
Why would you /not/ show how to take it apart, and ask people to watch the re-assembly, and reverse the procedure??
I had it apart, saw the problem, and decided that I should do a video on it. But had to get it done for the customer.
@@AutoTechWorld_DIY ah, ok. Makes sense.
Push the brake
That's right 👍
Not helpful
Oh, come on now. I hope you'll figure out what you need though.
