Neurodiverse Friends - Tics & Stims

- Welcome Tourette, the adorable new member of "Neurodiverse Friends" with Pixi & co. - Cats on the Spectrum. In this episode, we explore the difference between tics and stims. While stimming, common in autism, is a voluntary self-regulatory behavior, tics, more prevalent in Tourette syndrome, are involuntary.
Story, Design, and Animation: Luca Fattore
Music: Ratatouille's Kitchen - Carmen María and Edu Espinal

I never realized that I hadn't seen any non comedic tourettes depictions until now. This was pretty accurate for me. I'm glad they found friends.
I recently watched the charming movie Mary and Max which has a depiction of autism I really like. The director, Adam Elliot, also has a short film about a boy with tourette's called Harvie Krumpet. It may be something to check out if you like witty indie claymation.
Phoebe in Wonderland is a movie about a girl with Tourette's! It's been a while since I've seen it, but I remember it being pretty good
Motherless Brooklyn is non comedic movie about detective with Tourette's. Nice one actually, Edward Norton is starring
"In front of the class" is a movie based on a real person about a man with Tourette's who wants to become a teacher
I've got autism myself, but I imagine tourettes can make social interactions just as difficult.
Stimming is simply not enough, I need to fucking explode.

thats not neurodivergence, thats nervious system malfunction
A neat detail, not sure if it's intended or not, but the tourette's cat is the only one of the neurodivergent cast with a visible mouth while casually idling, since it's the source of what makes them special. And when they sit next to the other two at 0:29 you'll notice their mouth disappears for a moment almost as if they're trying to hide it after being shunned so many times because of it
That is a really cool observation.
That a really cool detail
Oh my god I'm crying?? So good
i think it's the animation style
What about the adhd cat? He does mouth things but he has no mouth while idle.
The _Neodiverse Friends_ cats really gives off the UPA-inspired cartoons from the 90s/2000s. Not only they are expressive through their designs, but their personalities showcased a healthy representation of neurodivergent people. This is coming from someone who has ASD myself. Kudos to you!
Thank you for your thoughtful words, Poweroffriendship! I'm delighted that you've noticed the connection between 'Neurodiverse Friends' and the UPA and early Cartoon Network style. Your perspective, especially as someone with ASD, adds invaluable depth to my work. Your insights are truly cherished! 🌈

I see you everywhere. lol
@@PixiGags as an adhd haver, the adhd cat is accreate.
i need an asd freind i can mess with.
I have autism and PDD I still stim but I also pace back and forth in my own house but when I see my favorite character from Villainous black hat I start dashing every where until I go to the glass door and press my face against the glass while having a massive grin plastard on my face not to mention I have a hyper fixation on eldritch horrors because of black hat is one and I started making eldritch horror cryptid and fairytale and legendary creatures hybrid oc's on paper while basing them on real animals
I love how... calm the ADHD kitty is. I see so many characters with ADHD portrayed as excitable and off the walls hyper, and while that's not necessarily inaccurate or anything, it gets tiring when it's all you see. It's nice to see some variety :]
SO TRUEEEE
Same! As someone who is calm with ADHD, it's nice to see a depiction of this version of ADHD. It isn't always having the zoomies, sometimes it's sitting calmly and just needing a fidget toy. Or a fidget ear, in this case. Lol
They've got a fidget to play with, and they're with a friend that's okay with their fidgeting. When you can unmask, life is pretty good.
So true, as someone with ADHD I never found myself relating to the hyperactive portrayals of it. So the ADHD cat is my first time ever truly relating to a ADHD character.
fr!! as someone with adhd i could be a really chill person
I'm autistic and stopped stimming for years because I always got into trouble for it. My mum scolded me for "behaving like a child", other kids made fun of me, teachers scolded me for distracting everyone, etc. The result were crippling anxiety, an eating disorder, biting my lips and fingernails and having more meltdowns.
Now that I finally unmasked and stim the way I feel comfortable with, most of my issues slowly faded away. Stimming is important and nobody deserves to be made fun of for it. Neither deserve people with tourette syndrome to be bullied or shunned for their tics.
I like drugs
I honestly don't even know what stimming is, and some of my friends tell me I do it sometimes, so it probably just looks normal to me.
I have ADHD, and there are things I do that I never realized were stims until I learned that stimming also occurs in people with ADHD
It makes me look back and think about all the ways my kindergarten teacher tried to lie to me to get me to stop stimming 😶
@@RaindropsBleeding Do you know how "people under stress" supposedly move? Like rocking back and forth, or fondling your fingers, and many more? Well, it's been associated with stress reaction or "tell", but really it's likely just stimming that yes, might be from stress, but also just a normal activity for certain people. Sucks for us, because if it's used to analyze suspicious people during interrogations, we're probably doomed
@foxtrox7616 we all doomed anyway. Body language interrogation analysis is kind of borderline pseudoscience, and channels that do that pretty much never analyze people who aren't already convicted of a crime. Like, no one *isn't* going to be stressed when talking to a homicide detective, guilty or not. (the strategy of what questions to ask can be interesting, or what defense someone's going for based on how they answer - it's just the body language part that doesn't hold up under scrutiny. You'd have to compare it to how that specific individual acts under other circumstances, and a lot of different self-soothing behavior is labeled as defensive or otherwise obnoxious even on guilty people in that type of content)
also - related tangent - polygraphs are BULLSHIT. In order to pass a polygraph you have to have the same physiological reaction between "what's the weather like lately" and "imagine if you were the one who murdered your life partner". The state that makes you """pass""" isn't even the state an innocent person would be in; they are only useful as props to trick people into confessing

The fact that Autism let the other Big cat (i don't know their name) touched freely it's ears show me how much comfortable it's with them.
And it's true! When we trust enough on someone, we let them freely touch anywhere (well, not anywhere but y'all got the point).
I love this animations, the fact that they represent Autism without being cliché or offensive it's something that i'll always admire
the other taller cat is ADHD! from the previous episode, you can see the same very long neck
I'm autistic, and I love tactile affection. But, yes, I like to have some sort of heads-up instead of suddenly being touched.
As someone who had to hide all their stimming to get my degrees and a job and has basically forgot how to stim with expected consequences raising awareness for this is super important.
Ps:slowly discovering how to do stimming again, as funny as that sounds.
Thank you for sharing your experience, Michimatsch. Your journey is important, and I appreciate you opening up about it. I'm glad that raising awareness for stimming resonates with you. It's wonderful to hear that you're slowly rediscovering how to stim again. While masking is often necessary for social interactions, repressing the need to release sensory overload isn't advisable. Wishing you all the best on your journey! ✌💖
@@PixiGags thank you so much!
I know what you mean! I've had to hide stims for most of my life, mostly for embarrassment. I've discovered how to stim again; it feels very comforting, and I wish I had rediscovered it earlier.
Cheers to you, and your stimming!
Sorry, may I ask? What are the consequences for not stimming for a long time? Are they very severe for your well-being? I'm just curious about it.

Thank you so much, Franck! I am thrilled to continue the series and raise awareness about mental disorders. 💖
as far as im aware, autism is considered a neurodevelopmental disorder, i dont know what adhd is considered. as for tourettes, its a neurological ot neurodevelopment disorder. (google says either? but you dont normally go to a psychotherapist for tourettes.)
Often just neurodivergence*, it CAN be a disorder if it negatively impacts your life - but usually the 'negative' is society's lack of acceptance and accommodation - making the actual problem lie in society (which is slowly changing for the better) and not our brains. Luckily audhd is positively influencing my life and my job, I can't imagine thinking like a neurotypical person.
this is adorable I love how they found their lil friend group in the end bc i do feel like thats how it goes for more neurodiverse ppl is you just find your lil group of weirdos to hang out with

i love this, not only is it so cute but it also brings awareness to stuff (also i relate) like every time i do my weird little facial/vocal tics around people they either tell me to stop or ask me why im doing it, which tends to make me nervous thus making it worse, but like when i do it with my neurodivergent frens they are like hell yeah do your silly little things.

And of course, people in the 80s or 90s who have tourette syndrome would have not have any friends because normal people would think of them as "weird"
There is a movie about a kid who has Tourettes. Throughout his life he has been in many hardships because of Tourettes, even his dad did not like him before he discovered he had it.
But he eventually became a teacher.
But hey, people on the autism spectrum can become good friends with people with Tourette's Syndrome.
Just like it is show in this animation, just incredible man.
i both tic and stim, and this is a great way to represent it!! while stimming can sometimes feel necessary and is somewhat difficult to not do, tics are something that is uncontrollable and involuntary. while you can suppress tics, they’re an uncontrollable, repetitive movement and can cause injury to the person ticcing or those around them :)
As someone with adhd, Ive been loving this series so far. I think this could be a great tool for explaining some of this to other people.

Your perspective on symbols for autism and your personal experience with making friends is highly appreciated. Each symbol carries its own significance, and it's wonderful to hear your thoughts. Yes, we definitely empathize with individuals that can understand how we feel and how we see the world! ❤️
I have ADHD and I make friends with people that are neurodiverse more easily to. I also find that the few romantic relationships I've had have been with people with disorders of some sort. I've been with this amazing lady that has DID (disassociate identity disorder) who had 6 different alters each with their own personalities and names. There's a popular movie that attempts to portray this disorder called "Split". I'm not sure if you've heard of it but of course they make the main character with DID into a bad guy who turns into some sort of monster or something so I really don't know what they were thinking, but they got the general idea of it down at least. However with the case of my ex, whenever an alter "fronts" (or takes over, fronting is another word for it), it's usually because she's involved in a situation she doesn't want to be in, is extremely uncomfortable or if she's really comfortable and feels safe enough a specific alter fronts which is the little girl alter. If I remember correctly she's between 6-8 years old (obviously not my ex lol she's in her 20's) but her childlike alter is. When we first met though her male, very protective alter would front a lot which I understood completely because when I meet someone new I'm more reserved and guarded as well.
Idk it's like people with disorders are easier for me to talk to and relate with. Sorry for the long message btw I just thought I'd share my experience to not that I wanna make it about myself... People probably think I'm selfish because I relate whatever they say with things in my own life and experiences but it's really the only way I can really understand something is if it relates to irl situations.😅 My bad.

It makes me very happy to learn that I'm not a "freak" for stimming. Sometimes it really does take just knowing the right people to feel less alone with ❤
That's great to hear, Void! You're not alone, and you're not strange for stimming. Understanding and acceptance from others can make a big difference. But remember, being proud of yourself and embracing who you are is the key to feeling truly happy and fulfilled. Keep being awesome! 💖✌
Awwww! They are so cute! Hope we can see more of them being together :)
I really love how they all become simple geometric shapes from time to time!
Inspiring to do my own art😊
Lovely to see these cats just get along and be friends with each other!
Thanks for the kind comment, Floof! I'm glad you enjoy the themes of friendship and connection. 💖
As a person with adhd, yes, yes, yes, this is heartwarming
Thanks so much for sharing that, Marshpool! I really appreciate it! :D
as someone who developed tics in their teen years, i really feel this and im glad youtube recommended it to me. its definitely my autistic and adhd friends who reacted better to my tics than any neurotypical people ever did. Tics and stims are different, and I do both! These days with my friends the only thing that happens is sometimes apparently over discord calls my vocal tics sound like sneezes lol
Ahhh adorable work once again!! I really love your stuff 🥺
Thank you very much, Delta! I appreciate your kind words! :D
@@PixiGags Aww of course!! I get so happy every time I see you post something new ^^ you’re very inspiring
this animation series is awesome, terrific, amazing, superb, fabulous, fantastic, staggering, incredible, extraordinary, breathtaking, tremendous, stunning, phenomenal, wonderful, excellent, marvelous, exceptional, extravagant and splendid.
These little guys always bring me so much joy, thank you for making them! I just recently started watching you guys and I have loved them so much when they pop up ❤
Screaming and crying this is so CUTE 😭 i’m late diagnosed autistic and basically restarting my entire life rn. I relate to the tourettes kitty in the beginning so much
Both the actual movement as well as the stylisation of the walk cycle were so freaking satisfying
It took me years to get rid of tics, I'm glad I no longer have them but somehow still remember how it feels
Hi Retrobitadam, thank you so much for sharing your story! I am also glad you were able to relax from your tics, I am sure it has not been easy. I also had a severe tic, and now I just have a very subtle version of it, but to compensate I stim more, but that's ok, because with stimming I can decide when and how to to them. Wishing you all the best! 💖
Watching these neurodivergent kitties just warms my heart!
I am happy to hear that! :D
I do have ADHD but I don't seem to find a lot of animations about ADHD so seeing this makes me happy. :)
I love how flexible ADHD is with everyone, happy to accept them as is and support them
I love the Neurodiverse Friends videos so much, it makes me very happy! The animation flows in a super satisfying way, really good stuff
I am so glad you enjoy it, Ken! Your kind words are very rewarding, thank you for your support! 💖😺
I got both Autism and ADHD, so I’m glad to see something that actually portrays us in a more positive light. Beautifully animated btw!
These are probably the best videos I've ever seen in my life. As an autistic person I understand what it's like to be different.
You need to be making so much money as an animator. As an ASD person, animation (movement) is kinda my special thing. I will rewatch certain movements that I like looped over and over. And let me just say that EVERY SINGLE MOMENT of this is stimulating me in the best possible way! I'm getting flashbacks to the first time I saw Riki Tiki Tavi as a kid (which was a very defining moment for me). THANK YOU!
You're welcome, @justinwescott8125! It brings me joy to hear that my animation resonates with you so deeply and stimulates your interest! I share your fondness for 'Riki Tiki Tavi' and always find it a pleasure to watch. There's something special for me as well in watching favorite animation parts in a loop, particularly when the animator adds playful touches between the frames. Your support means a lot to me. Thank you! 💖✌✨
WHEN THE KITTY WITH THE TIC GOT HAPPY OMG 😭❤️ MOST PRECIOUS MOMENT IN THE VIDEO
Thank you for sharing that, @bar111a.5! I am happy that animation resonates with you, I wanted to get a cathartic moment after she was treated so poorly. Wishing you all the best! 💖
As someone with born and raised with Asperger’s all my life, this video really struck me home and I love it!! Amazing work! ^^
Thanks so much, @JustinRoKStar! I really appreciate it! 💖✌
Wow... this is what it feels like to be seen ❤ Love this series!
Oh yes, I am happy you got the point of this episode! Thank you so much for the appreciation! :D
I have sooo many "issues" bc of my childhood and family genetic history and I'm always terrified to say how much my brain is fragmented because of that trauma. People always seem to believe you're faking having disorders if you list off more than 3, or more than depression and anxiety. Representation like this makes me less anxious and self loathing at how my childhood shaped me. I am so happy to see adhd, autism, and tourettes represented so far, and even happier to know you plan on adding more kitties into the mix! I subscribed because of this, I just love how adorable the animation is and can't wait for future content!
God I love these animations so much because not only are they so cute, they're so informative and are genuinely helpful. Thank you for making these :)
