- The CZcams 355 hits the dyno with a simple non inter-cooled turbo kit and makes big power! Stock block, cast crank, and factory rods are pushed pretty hard for some boosted dyno testing @NicksGarage
*I do not recommend pushing stock components to this level of hp*
A simple but effective budget blow thru turbo kit using a On3 7875 turbo and mostly parts I had laying around the shop we were able to get 700+hp/700+tq out of the 355 before we ran out of fuel injector!

The SB Chevy was Gods gift to the internal combustion engine.
Haha 😄 agreed
Building a SBC with my son he just got his license and battled through leukemia. Think it'll be a great father son thing. Thank you for the info, God bless.
Love to hear father and son projects, not enough of that these days. Feel free to email me pcperformance1@outlook.com or message me on instagram @cutter_performance if you have any questions during your build. I'm a father and a cancer survivor, it must have been quite hard seeing your son go through that. Hopefully, onwards and upwards 🙏
Make some videos. Love the father son videos
@@cuttersperformance it's been rough but thankfully he is doing very good and can't complain.
I know this is an old video but my 1st 10sec 1/4 pass was with a stock rod, cast gm crank, hyper pistoned 355. Roller cam TFS heads and 55/55 tuneup in a cheater plate. Spun it 7k and had COUNTLESS bottles up to a 73/73 jets. Built like tanks!!
That's badass! 🤘🏻
Great job. I am a Sbc person myself. Keep up the great combinations. Love watching to see what kind of low buck big horse power things you can come up with.
I'm with you. There's something about the gen 1 SBC. Nice video 👍
Thanks man!

If I built a decent 350 with forged parts just for insurance and an intercooler for my peace of mind.... do you think something like this (tuned down to 500-600 torque) could be a viable option for reliable towing?
Stick with what you Like ! - Thanx for the Colab with Nick - That was Cool !!!!
This is an awesome setup and is approachable for many true gearheads.
Such a great video. Thanks man.
So nice to see a old SBC make that kind of power, and the bottom is pretty much stock, besides the pistons. I Will build a turbo sbc myself, thanks for the inspiration!👍⚡️
I’ve been waiting for the video to drop!
Love the sb and votech builds!
I will always love the OG SBC (where I started my chevy life). I hated the LS at first but I've grown to love em....
Sbc gang!!! Love this stuff and you got me on that turbo it rips🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁
Found you through Nick's channel and subscribed.
Even though I play with Fords, only a fool would ignore the huge place the SBC has in hot rod history.
In these days of LS swap everything, it's good to see something different and interesting.
Good job!
I appreciate you coming to check out my channel and subbing. Motors are motors. They are all fun haha we all just have our preferences
Awesome brother. Thanks. I'll see you then.
Just started my sbc turbo build thank you
More turbo/superchargered SBC content is coming up
I saw this as i am currently building a turbo’d sbc and am super stoked
Easy power!
Thats awesome!
Good stuff. I dig the sbc content
Cool project
BRAVO!!!!
Suffering from success🤣
Once again an excellent video that is much appreciated. Although I have a little much of a first gen in my Sonoma I enjoy the inexpensive engines you build, very impressed with what you are getting out of them vs. what you have in them. I hope to have a F-1 ProCharger within a year or 2 and run it via blow thru but i'll wait till I retire back to Windsor Ont. first. Keep up the great work.
Thank you I really appreciate the positive feedback. More budget friendly builds coming up!
Thank you Richard for this video and test. I built two destroked motors and they have more power on top end with a tight duration cam it has good torque also. The 327sbc made more power than the 350 so I’ve always understood the science. Thanks again!!
👍👍👍👍 totally Cool keeping it simple
Very cool! I have a couple turbo sbc builds
Great video, can't wait to see when you fix the waste gate and add fuel...
Man, I almost had the BIG one when you said all the sb stuff was going, but I think there is a little room for a LS/vortec build or two. Keep up the great work, I still say it's the best sbc/vortec site avaliable!
Haha I thought i might be able to get a few guys with that joke 😅
Theres a bazillion ls channels out there. Nice to see someone focus on gen 1
sbc forever
Most underrated channel with soooo much information!!! Wish I could implement all your Information in a build… One day!!! Thanks for what you do brother some of us truly appreciate it.
Man I appreciate that alot
I’m a gen 1 sbc guy as well. Same reason.
great video!
CZcams is full of😢 ls stuff. Love the sb content !
Im build LS engines aswell but Gen1 are my favorite, thanks for checking put my video
I feel like the only thing the small block lacks is consumption of air. The Ls has the superior ignition system. Plus huge intake for more air to go through compared to a SBC. Air/fuel is all you need to make power. So the SBC just needs a little tweaking. I’ll say. But when done right! They’ll blow people away with the power it makes!
I had a 355 built with stock crank and rods with a 200 shot that ran in the mid 10's.
Awesome video man. Maybe some blow through setup stuff later?
OLD SCHOOL....IS THE BEST SCHOOL
Sweet.
Yes Sir!!!
Wow , 700 HP , that's a bunch , looking forward to the video showing the stock vortec with a cam upgrade . Mine , I have a stock Vortec with the ramjet cam .I have no idea how much hp I'll get but it should run strong . Stock ex. manfolds going into side pipes on 65 vette . You've helped a lot , Thank You !
Glad your looking forward to it! It should be fun to see how it works out for power
well, the ramjet 350 makes like 348hp, 390+ft lbs with 1.5 roller rockers, so id say like, 340+, if you have a dual plane 4bbl intake and headers.
Can't wait to see that budget l31. I've got one sitting at home waiting to go in my 99 suburban, but I've been holding off cause I want a little more grunt.
In the works right now
Pat the 44 mm wastegate is big enough the problem is the placement of it. It vents the drivers side of the engine but the way that manifold is design it's not venting all cylinders on the passenger side.
You would need to move the wastegate closer to the turbo. Right on the elbow where the pipe comes to the turbo flange so the wastegate has priority over all cylinders and then it will work good.
I moved into the turbo LS but would love to do this with our c20.
Yeah, I know it is not the most ideal spot, but I thought it would be ok with that turbo...turns out no lol. I will probably keep this out and add another 44mm I have as well in a better location
Thank you for your knowledge and videos USA 🇺🇸 USA 🇺🇸
With a turbo it's all about the harmonics. Turbo boosting loads the down stroke when the charge gets ignited as well as the up stroke from back pressure of the exhaust having to spin the turbo wheel. With both sides loaded it dampens harmful harmonics that can cause catastrophic damage, kind of like brake torqueing when you launch at the dragstrip vs doing a neutral slam. Turbo charging is probably the safest power adder to use to make big power with factory parts because of the cushioning effect of being loaded in both directions.
That's why LS engines can handle making so much power with the wimpy fasteners they are put together with because of the better harmonics that is train drivered into them. The firing order really helps an LS calm down harmful harmonics as well as the larger diameter camshaft, probably the number one advantages over the sbc. The LS firing order sbc camshafts are becoming more available and do help cut down harmonics but not as much as an LS because the LS cam diameter.
IMO the sbc still has its place and is what I also prefer vs an LS as long as it is going into a Chevy vehicle. And they can be built to make even more power than an LS can make using the aftermarket components available for them. They make cylinder heads for a sbc that flow over 400 intake cfm I'm not sure the LS aftermarket support has reached that level yet?
So now if you plan on running 800 + HP in the vehicle its going in you might want to consider a mid plate or a front plate to mount that thing or you can run into some problems from block distortion in the drivers side motor mount area. I have seen it happen to a boosted LS and a boosted small block Buick where the number 2 cylinder lets go. The only thing we could figure what was causing it was all that torque yanking on the drivers side motor mount causing the #2 cylinder to distort making it fail. I would imagine the same thing can happen to a sbc with lots of boosted torque on tap too? Cool build, good job.
Thats a really good point on the engine mounts vs mid plate. The centralized force on the block causes the cylinder to distort. Makes sense very smart
So glad you were kidding about going all LS,lol
Nice
Great to here yer staying true to the small blocks, good to see your working with Nick too. I am thinking of doing a turbo set up on my next engine, it would be a 400, cheap ebay turbo set up, blow thru carb. Trying to figure out what to use for a good cheap turbo, i plan on only running like 5 psi of boost, on a low compression ratio 400, for torque and economy in a truck. Also trying to figure out what to get a cam ground too,, as far as specs. It would be a mechanical flat tappet cam in all likelihood.
Id call crower or iksy for the proper cam. No word on cheap/good turbos...id be hesitant as to longevity with ebay stuff.
ILL TAKE ONE TO GO
Don't get me going, to wanting a turbo now 😲.... I haven't even got to use the other goodies you made me install.... LOL
Haha sorry sandy 😅 everything needs boost
A budget destroked sbc turbo application would be awesome 🤔🧐 lol
i dont know if that steam-holed 400 block would like it LOL maybe if you put splayed caps on it ...MAYBE
I actually prefer the old school x rods over the powder metal rods for a boosted application. From my experience, the old school rods tend to just bend and the powder metal rods tend to break if you over power them. I've been boosting mild small block chevy motors for several years with blow through carbs. I also like using the Snow Performance water/meth kits, they work very well.
Ive pushed a few PM rods way father than I should and always suprised how they hold up but your right they break and dont bend usually. Ive only used the AEM meth systems in the past but man do they work well. Gotta love meth haha 😄
I've had an occurrence where a Hyperutectic piston shattered at high rpm. The "Old School" Stock Rod, with it's Pin, went up and down a few times in the cylinder until the Rod/Pin broke through the side of the block. No more engine turning, Everything came to dead stop. The Rod only bent into a slight S shape. No Breakage.
What did this motor make na?

Have you built a turbo SBC strictly for towing? I'm kind of wondering about doing one while trying to keep MPG up.
I don’t understand “I’m a SBC or LS Guy” , I’m a horsepower per dollar Guy! Love the budget builds. Great content just subbed
true. in the end when youre building high HP stuff(higher than this like four digits) it aint gonna matter if its and LS or small block
at that point it becomes a matter of cubic inches and cubic dollars and how much money you spend to spin the RPM and boost levels it takes to make serious steam
That makes sense for strictly race engines but most guys are building street engines. Like in my case the gen 1 was the best way to go. The swap kit was cheaper and used parts for a gen 1 are more common in my area.
I am in the process of building a sbc with a fuel injection setup with Bosch 210 injectors and an on3 107mm turbo. For my 89 camaro.
Third gen 🤘
Big fan of e-85 been racing with it for years now i wouldn't worry about the crank but that block gen2 block at .060 over won't last but good job guys!
Man I wish we had E85 in my area, crazy stuff. I figured the rods, would go first, then pistons and then block. Its .030 this one and sonic tested well.
@@cuttersperformance I buy E100 and mix it myself you should dyno the e85 mixed down to 70-65 percent makes the most power on my dyno and still has the cooling,
and mix it with reg gas not race gas that helps kick off the ethanol.
I realize that this is a while back but, this SBC has a small turbo exhaust system(not diameter) but length. The first time I saw this was 89’ on a turbo Buick V6, comparing a regal exhaust system to a T/A exhaust. The T/A system was much shorter(different chassis clearance) the engineers calculated more energy was reaching the turbine and making much more power. They de-tuned the Buick V-6’s in the T/A’s cause it would have stomped the factory Corvettes.
I watched this again, and I still like it. I'll be looking for the down and cheap l-31 build cause that is exactly whre I am right now. My vote stick with geen 1!
More boosted and NA SBC builds in the works
Mad HP. Looking forward to seeing your next builds. Funny note. My girlfriend asked me the other night while I was driving down the road, what is a piss cutter, how much are you spending now and why do I need one? 😂 I said what? She said ya, 😂 I turned and looked at her with a smile and said, "Babe, don't worry. It's not that much, and remember! It's not how much I spend, it's how much "we" save!" 😂 Ya that didn't work out to well. I had to show her your channel really fast before I got slapped up my head. 😂
Haha that made my day 🤣
Dating? none of her biz what you spend!
I love it when LS guys are getting rid of small block Chevy parts because I just scored a low mileage 84 corvette 350 and a set of nice 906 vortec for free 👍
Nice score!
Shh don't tell everyone. More SBC speed parts for us.
That yr and 85 have forged trws
Oil line 2 the fuel block off plate works well O'Reilly's Auto Parts sales the plate also
It is likely not that the gate is big enough but the placement. If you can put that gate on the turbine housing
Seeing this is making me even more excited about getting my Camaro up n running... got a 396 stroker that I will be running the stealth sniper efi and a turbo.. curious what power I will be making with the turbo since its at around 530 now😃
That is absolutely awesome budget build man!!! What was the air intake temps without a intercooler?
I'm a sbc,bbc,bbcad,master builder
Wait...what channel am I watching?...I'm with Pat in the shop and next thing I know I'm in Nick's dyno cell. It's like some sort of weird youtube dream. I knew I huffed too much gasoline.
Hahaha 😂
my guess on boost creep is the wastegate is in a bad location bypasses whole left side of head basically
I drive a 6.0 ls every day at work, you couldn't give me one.i'll keep my gen 1&2 small block toys
5:49 697 hp at 5100 rpm.... Wow.
LS Cylinder Heads are what make them so good. They also can take a lot of power on stock bottom ends. When they came out SBC heads sucked in comparison, unless you were spending a lot of cash. Now we have a ton of affordable SBC heads. These DNA heads did well, especially when you consider the cost. I looked at LS swapping. A Summit engine swap kit is 1400 bucks Cdn, without headers. Then a tune/rework or something like Terminator or an MSD box if you want to run Carb. Based on the cost of swapping an LS into my first gen F body it's better to spend on a better set of heads.
Yeah exactly its 50 years of technology difference between the two. Ls swaps as often not nearly as cheap as some may think and may not make sense for some if you already have money invested into sbc parts. I go through that alot at the shop with guys wanting to LS swap for $1500 lol
It all depends on what you want and how you go about it.
I turbo LS swapped my Fbody for relatively cheap, but I also had a budget in mind waited and watched for deals. Of course doing all the work myself, I used a basic 05 truck 5.3, which has the "gen4" rods/pistons
I didn't rebuild engine, just cleaned/inspected inside when I swapped pans, resealed the known leak points, cam in and used same turbo pat has in this video.
It's a solid combo that can cruise or rip.
LS = Great heads and 6 bolt mains
its cheaper to put aftermarket heads on a 350 than it is to ls swap.
@@gloryautomotiveservices2578 tiny 6 bolt mains.
I'm a gen 1 root blower guy but I'm starting to to do some LS stuff
Factory rotating assemblies with an optimized tune usually can take around 1300 horsepower before failure which is usually a connecting rod per Richard Holder CZcams channel.
Boy you smoking some good stuff 😮
@@user-cx9qy7ky3w I used to think the same way until I checked out Richard holder CZcams channel
My opinion if EFI was mocked up and tuning kept in check with some arp rod bolts I bet this set up could live a respectable life on the street
People have pushed this kind of power without any issues from the rods
single plane intake? good job!! old school fun with an sbc.
Dual plane air gap
@@cuttersperformance THANKS
I’m doing the same build right now copying it
Turbo and all? Haha maybe add some forged pistons and better rods for longevity
Yes the same one
Is there any other pointers or things that might need to do?
@derickpruitt6846 good rods, forged pistons. Also water meth or intercooling is always good too. Keep the boost at 10 psi or less and she will survive a long time with a proper tune
Nick face when he see sbc make 600 hp he did like that l😂😂😂
Haha he was having fun
Great job, Pat! I'm impressed that engine held together. If I'd be worried about anything on the motor it's a head gasket. I'm really jealous about the SHP block! 😮 I'd love to have one of those!
QUICK question . . . Can you please explain the Vortec head issue with the coolant passages on a pre-Vortec block? I've read about it but there must be something I'm not grasping. I'm more of a visual learner. Even if it's a "short" video or whatever YT calls them. Thanks. 👍
BTW, I have seen your previous video. For some reason I'm still not getting it. 🤷
Yeah, the GM head gaskets surprised me. I never used them with that kind of power before. The arp head bolts help alot.
I can try to make a short video, but real quick, i will explain it.
-A pre vortec sbc has a small passage from the water pump, through the block to a hole in the passenger side cylinder head
-the passage allows a small amount of coolant to flow even when the thermostat is closed
-Vortecs dont have this passage because the stock water pump and intake have a small hose that allows coolant to flow instead of the passage in the block.
- Without this bypass, you can get major temp swings and overheating from air pockets stuck at the thermostat.
A simple fix is to drill a few holes in the thermostat to allow a bit of coolant flow and prevent air pockets.
He has a video explaining that.. I just don't know what one off hand though.
@@cuttersperformance Okay. I'll do the t-stat trick. I have a pair on a 638 block and I have exactly that problem. Thanks.
@@williamklibinski3475 I have seen it too .
Dude that's wild! Has it thrown a rod yet? I want to do the same thing with a beater 83 Camaro.
Haha not yet but its alot of stock rods/hyper pistons. This turbo kit is actually going to he used on a 383 stroker built for boost going in a third gen Trans am 🤘
Tell you what im a sbc fan too, and i seen a boosted 377 sbc that made 1400hp and the dyno couldnt load it any higher, that was suprising!
I stumbled on this video and I like what you did with this basic turbo setup, especially the factory manifold on the drivers side, cheap but effective. Any inform on the other parts you used besides crank and block, which I have several of right now? I'm stuck on gen SBC, and now you have me thinking turbo again, dog gone you! I could limit the power at say 625-650 and have a ball for a long time.
Thanks mike! Check out my channel with the videos about the "CZcams 355" it will show all the parts that were used
@@cuttersperformance OK i will....now you got me thinking about turbos again....I might try to duplicate your efforts....kinda simple and cool.
Oops🤣🤣🤣
I watch your show every now and then. I I was wondering, have you ever built a 400 small block? I was kinda thinking of it being Pro charged. 😁😉
Funny you ask... I have never built a 400 for a boost, but I just made a trade deal for a Dart block. It will be a 407 SBC built for boosted goodness
Oh that sounds like a awesome idea!!! Looking forward to seeing this video. You put together great videos by the way. Very informative. Thanks 😉
@Cletis Kroeker thanks man appreciate that. It wont be for awhile as im still collecting parts, but you'll see a Turbo charged 383 before that
Hello since the last time I left a comment i've come to the conclusion the Pro Charger is a little rich for my blood so have decided i'm going with a turbo combo. My setup is a 399 1st gen stroker that i'll be wanting to run an exhaust system on (Magna Flow), i'm curious if you think it would be easier with the turbo mounted under the hood or in the bed of the truck? This will be a street toy 95% of the time.
Ditch the EFI and get a ATM E-85 blow-thru carb. More timing, more power and E-85 will cool everything down!
No E-85 in my area unfortunately
@@cuttersperformance Bummer, I'm in Indiana it's everywhere!
I wish, its race gas at the pump lol
Can you let me know all the stuff you got for that sbc.... I got a 383 stroker I'm trying to do the same way... please and thank you...
Dude when you said you were fixing to swap over to LS this was going to be a serious hate letter🤣 so I'm glad you were joking the zip tie was a great idea as the saying goes necessity the mother of all invention dude I want to ask a favor I started a Vortec 502 build about 10 years back not to go into too much detail but I didn't get to complete it because of an injury basically the bottom end it's all forged and throw a set of relatively decent heads on it and run a 871 just think it over and turbos are the big deal now but I'd like to see what it would do to just naturally aspirated & maybe a little boost we had great success with the 454 but really what do you have to lose man?? With a little machine work on the bottom and set of heads you decide whatever cam you want like I said just think it over it would make for one Killer video not to mention very inexpensive like you I build mostly small blocks👍 eventually I'll probably do it again just kick it around I'm sure you can find one in a jock yard looking forward to your next video👍
Haha I was hoping to get a few guys with that joke 😅
Man, I've actually thought about getting an 8.1 vortec, but everyone wants an arm and a leg for them. Would be fun to budget, build, and boost for sure
A sbc can be made to run just a good with turbos if not better as a LS, the only downside is the cost to do it lol, you gotta put a few k into a sbc to make it an equal starting point as a junkyard ls ill give them that. But there's just something about the old tried and true Gen1s I can't get away from, more costly or not ill always have a few around! Not saying ill never have an Ls but if or when I do it'll be setting next some good looking sbcs 😂
Exactly man, totally agree

I keep getting asked how much powerccan a sbc handle
by Bloodviking master engine builder
Old school 350 sbc 4 bolt stock internals around 500 hp and 6500 rpm
Old school 350 4340 internals and forged pistons 650 hp at 7500 rpm steel main caps arp bolts
Block will fail much past that. I've seen 850 at short bursts then eventually boom.
Ls small block chevt limit on stock parts about 1200 hp. They do often break at 1450. Even beefed up. Even with a girdle.
Fully forged ls more reliable but block reaches its limits at 1450 or so.
Bbc.stock internals 2 bolt on boost part block fill 650 hp. 6500 rpm
Forged internals max rpm 7500, 1200 hp 4 bolt main arp studs.
All engines fail if rpm is held for a long duration.

Where did you get the oil feed from? Just wondering.
Do you have a recommendation on s blow through I'm nuild a twin turbo 350 right now and not sure which way I should go
I used blow through EFI on this one, it was a MSD Atomic 2 (Same as Holley Sniper). For blow through carbs, CSU makes good ones
Also I got the aluminum Dna heads do you know what torque spec the rocker arm screws have to be?
45 ftlbs with thread sealant for the rocker studs
Did you use some kind of boost reference fuel pressure regulartor with this blow throug carb?
Its actually EFI and yeah I used a boost reference regular 1:1
Can you share the link to the manifold
I wouldn't sweat the rods, they are forged steel. But I would be a little more nervous about the hyperutectic pistons!
But engines like Pontiacs, Buick's, and Olds that have cheap cast iron rods, then I would be very worried!!
Ive pushed some hypers pretty far in the past with extra ring gap and conservative timing (no room for error). Maybe I will have to do a Richard Holdner big bang test on a SBC and boost and see what lets go
I wouldn't sweat the rods either, if you're keeping it below 6000.
