    The first season of Riverdale was set in the present. The final episode, actually, the entire final season was a multiverse. They all graduated high school and the sixth season was 7-8 years after graduation and ended with a comet hurtling toward Riverdale. In the season all of the gang had gotten superpowers and gave all of their powers to Cheryl. Cheryl was then able to try to deflect the comet but couldn’t. Instead an an angel, saving all of the people in the town, transported them to another universe set in 1955 where they were all in high school again. None of them had any memories of their previous lives. In the second to the last episode, all of them got their memories back so they remembered living two distinct lives. This series definitely had some sci-fi and supernatural content. It even crossed over with Sabrina the teenage witch. Several of them had died, and Sabrina resurrected them. Very convoluted, but probably one of my favorite final episodes to a show ever. The endings very appropriate. They are all dead, and together in the afterlife living forever 17, just like the Archie comics have been for the last 80+ years. They are perpetually juniors in high school.

    I really appreciate you talking about the show in a way that i think is more productive. you say something like "this show is doing X, and i prefer when shows do Y" instead of "this show is doing X, and its objectively bad when shows do X".

    The middle episode is a rough one, because the Veronica storyline is promoting a new CW show, which always takes away from good story development.

    In case you're wondering why the timeline seems so weird in the final episode, in the last season the characters went back in time to the fifties and forgot that they were from the future and lived as teenagers despite the fact that in the season before they had graduated high school moved away and then there was a large Time Jump and had come back to town all as adults. So they were literally adults who thought they were teenagers living the lives of teenagers in the past and somehow had parents there despite the fact that they came back in time from the future. It was really stupid.

    "An albatross around his neck" is actually not as weird a line as it seems! It's an idiom which comes from the epic poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner - an albatross around his neck is used as a symbol of the narrator being burdened by his regret (over harming the albatross which brought a curse upon his crew) and attempting to redeem himself. Nowadays, an albatross is often used as a metaphor for regret or a heavy psychological burden. (Just providing context for this one thing, since, like you, I have no idea what's going on in the rest of this video!)😂

    Oh, quick note I forgot. Luke Perry played Archie's dad originally, but he died IRL after Season 3. If they kept "Archie's dad" as a character on the show, then yes, he would have been played by a different actor. I wouldn't know if they kept the Mr. Andrews character, as I stopped shortly into Season 3. Maybe they just brought in "the uncle" instead so they wouldn't have to replace Luke.

    Honestly, the first season is a solid little murder mystery story, and is worth a watch, I think. But I gave up about halfway through season two, because I thought it was getting a little silly. Everything I've heard that happens after makes me happy with that decision.

    this was such a fun video! so refreshing seeing someone actually treat it like something worth of analysis and thinking about rather than just thrashy or mindless fun, yeah the final speech in the finale feels so antithetical to the theme of the whole show, really, but otherwise i think most serious fans (not the hate-watchers or the people only watching for ships) agree the rest of the episode is pretty close to perfect. to me, each season of Riverdale kinda works as an anthology with a new theme and vibe and aesthetic that carries over similar-enough characters, so you could mostly jump into any season and if you pay attention to the dialogue you could still understand most of what's happening, though of course that's not ideal because it's meant to be a linear story. but yeah, this was a really cool and fun video! honestly, you could do a whole series of watching the show or even just a first, middle, and last for each season, which i think would work wonderfully for Riverdale because of its format. honestly there's so much of this show that's written off as something stupid or like it has nothing to say so this was just a little like a "faith in humanity" restoring moment for me lol. thank you for this

    No, you are exactly right about the middle episode. I ended up liking Riverdale in a “oh just here for the crazy shenanigans“ kind of way in the end. But I never loved it the way I did season one, because they completely lost the friendship aspect of the show. I hated how each of the core for characters (Archie, Veronica, Betty and Jughead) were always siloed off in their own storylines. That in my opinion was the number one factor that made the show drop in quality so much after season one. And that is also why I enjoyed the final season. Yes they were in the 1950s because of time travel and magic nonsense, and there were certainly faults, but I enjoyed that they were friends and spending time together again.

    I've seen to about season 3 of Riverdale but couldn't miss up this reaction. The show is actually based on the Archie comics, which is why all the names are 😘
    To go full circle with your reactions, Luke Perry (RIP) who played Archie's dad, also played Pike (Pike, not Spike) in the original movie version of Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
    Thanks for reacting, much fun! 🥰

    This middle episode you watched is just a couple after I gave up I think... After that I just kinda kept up with the story from Alex Meyers videos... But as I understood it, there was a timejump between S4 and S5? So they graduate in "present time", then they make a jump to 7 years after graduation. Then they have a "multiverse" time-jump back to the 50s in S7 and they are back in highschool again. (Ok now I saw you googled it a little) S1 was actually really good. S2 was more up and down, some parts better than S1 and some misses. S3 had it's moments but started to get a little bit too out there... And as I said, I gave up a bit into S4. And after that I guess it was pure chaos with timetravel, superpowers and parallell universes 😂

    I actually think you would be the best judge of this than most of Riverdale fandom:
    The characters not meant to be real people . They are literally archetypes. They are indeed immortal. They’re comic book characters (Archie the comics) and their stories fracture into different dimensions and trajectories, yet end up in infinite loops, as we see in the final scene in heaven.
    People who watched the story all the way through expected it to be a TV show. It’s really not. It’s a comic book brought to life.

    I also hope you’ll make more similar videos where you watch first , (middle) and the last episodes of other tv shows as well.
    The commentary/reaction somehow often becomes more intriguing I guess, with the person watching certain episodes without much context :)

    I'm not entirely sure because I never watched the entire show (I gave up around season 3 I think) but in the first few seasons it was definitely set in modern times they had smartphones and it was current, and then in the last episode its the 50s so I'm assuming that time travel happened somewhere in amongst the unhinged seasons of the show

    I know, me again. I didn't want to keep editing comments, but then I think of something I want to add....I'm easily distracted that way, like a squirrel. Anyway! I was initially skeptical of this mode of "first, middle, last episode" until I saw you do it with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (Then you started actually watching that show, and that is awesome!) I found it novel to see that show I had loved for so long and watched so many times be seen in that way. Now that you've also done this with Riverdale, a show I gave up on in its third season, I've been fascinated by seeing how things developed beyond what I had actually watched when it aired.Jughead's criminal father a cop?!? Cheryl and Antoninette still a couple! St. Clair is back again, WTF??? I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm enjoying your first/middle/last take on shows. I enjoyed it with a show I knew very well, and now I enjoyed it with a show I didn't even finish.
    If you are taking suggestions for other shows to do this to, there are a lot of candidates. Going with series that have officially ended, off the top of my head and sticking with a supernatural theme, I would suggest Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (set in the Riverdale world, sort of), Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, True Blood, and Teen Wolf. If you have no intention of actually watching any of them. Just a suggestion, though. I'm enjoying your Good Place and Buffy runs, and I look forward to whatever your next first/middle/last series will be.

    The show was my fav from season 1 till season 3, season 5&6 was where i felt it got really crazy. The 6 year time jump really threw me off and the flow of the show in my opinion. Then rivervale was bonkers. I didn't really like the 50's time frame, I wanted them to go back to the present and resume that to end the show off. I enjoyed your reaction though. It helped me work out how I feel about the show as a whole. You were spot on about a few things. Like how it was weird how the characters were handling new information. They do that a lot in this show and it gives it a weird vibe. The characters are never really shocked with anything that happens in the show. Which is strange to me, especially when so much happens in this show. Also with how the first episode was so cohesive and it got more chaotic. Which is exactly how it feels watching the whole show, its just a descent into madness, lol.

    LOST is one of my favourite shows, so I definitely would love to see you watch the whole thing (if you haven't - I think you'd milk that show dry (in a good way lol), with the kind of commentary you do), but I also can't help but think that it would be perfect for a First, Middle and Last video. Just pure insanity, what the hell is going on kind of reaction. Very similar to this video, except the show is actually good. 😄

    I used to love the comic books when I was a child. I wanted this series to be better than it was, but isn't that just how it is? The first season was actually pretty darn good, and although they messed with how the characters are/should be, I felt they did alright bringing them into the modern world. The second season wasn't as good, but it was still decently watchable. I couldn't get through the third season; I tried twice to do it because I wanted to see the crossover with Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (they are set in the same universe) and was intrigued by the idea that there might be a supernatural angle or undertone coming to the show. But Season 3 was so damn convoluted and ... the worst sin for a show ... boring.
    In regards to comic book vs. TV series (not that anyone really cares, ha-ha): I love what they did with Veronica. I felt Betty was treated fairly. Archie in the comics was rather a dunderhead, so that's alright, too. Jughead should have been asexual as he is in the comics, and the character is ALL wrong. Every single one of the parents is totally out-of-character with how they were presented in the comics, so much so that it's actually irritating to my nostalgia. 😜 But I do like how Archie's father was portrayed; Luke Perry will be missed, RIP. Miss Grundy in the comics was NOT a hot, young teacher going after students! She was an elderly, grouchy teacher who shared a lot of similarities with Professor McGonegall of Harry Potter's world (though not a witch). Cheryl and Jason Blossom were occasional side characters that mostly had their own comics and weren't brought in much to the lives of Archie, Betty, Veronica, and Jughead. Reggie Mantle should have been a main character in the series; he was a main character in the comics, but in the series, he is shunted to the side. I HATED what they did with Chuck Clayton! They made him a grotesque predator when in the comics, he was a really good guy. One of the few people of color, and they made him *that* guy and I hate it. (If that was him in the final episode, it was a completely different writing of Chuck than in Season 1.) Dilton Doiley is also completely wrong in the series.

  • @DucktorDoom
    @DucktorDoom Před 8 měsíci +2

    Not in the fandom and didn't follow the show that closely so I can't speak to why other people didn't like the polyamorous ending but for me it's that Jughead was famously and explicitly asexual (and aromantic) in the Archie comics that the show is based on, and the show totally erased that throughout its run. The finale could've been an opportunity to have Jughead realize that about himself, but no he's in a polyamorous relationship (and on top of that, he seems to only be in a relationship with the 2 girls, not with Archie, so it's not even like they made him bi). I was really annoyed by that.
    I agree with you about disliking these types of finales where they tell you everything that happened to the characters. I'm OK with timeskips if they're carefully done, but stuff like this tends to leave me pretty cold.

    • @jakemartin4116
      @jakemartin4116 Před 8 měsíci +1

      I think the Jughead thing was a factor for the whole comics, but for the polyamory thing, any positive feelings that would give are kind of ruined by the fact that it's never actually part of the show. In the last episode they say that it happened for a while off screen, then it ended, and then they never talked to each other again and now they're all dead. That kind of takes the fun out of it for anyone.

    • @DaphneQueen
      @DaphneQueen Před 8 měsíci

      That is an interesting point. Jughead being asexual wouldn’t effect being polyamorous, but being aromantic definitely would. The funny thing about any of it to me though is that he was with Betty for most of the show, so they had already tossed his original romantic preferences out anyway 🤷🏾‍♀️
