    This episode is dedicated to Robert Forster, who played Ed the disappearer AKA the vaccum cleaner salesman. He died shortly after recording his appearance in this episode. Rest in peace Robert.

    The way you analyze the dialogue is so f#$ing good. Video essays can be good but they always go for the big scenes that everyone knows, but this kind of reaction makes it possible to analyze back and forth scenes off the cuff which makes for a very interesting watch

    I think the "world's 2nd best lawyer" mug was a funny gift from Kim, but now for Jimmy it subconsciously represents Chuck always being the best lawyer and putting him down as he used to.

    • @brookeannschrock
      @brookeannschrock Před 2 měsíci

      I disagree! Jimmy always seemed to really treasure the mug and I think it’s no coincidence that the episode where Kim starts talking to real hardened criminals is the same where the mug is shot (Bagman). I always saw it as a representation of their relationship especially with how the travel mug is treated in season 6, but I’ve never thought about Chuck when it comes to the mug so maybe you’re right, I’ll pay attention on my next rewatch!!

      @@brookeannschrock Spoilers!!!!
      I think that's a good interpretation. But I also took the mug as the representation of their mundane lawyer life, so the mug being shot and Kim throwing it in the trash represents how they can't just go back to being regular lawyers (after it being shot), and they deciding that that life is over (Kim throwing it in the trash).
      Also, if you rewatch it, I'd look at how Jimmy grabs it. I think during season 5 he usually puts his fingers around the 2nd best lawyer part, cause he really wants to show and believe that he's number 1, that he's the magic man. I'd recommend you watch the Ological youtube channel. They have great videos on the topic.

    Peter'd initially planned to have only Ed's voice, but as Vince was shooting the film at the same time, producer Melissa Bernstein suggested they showed him as well. Glad they did as it was one of the last scenes he ever worked on.
    Shout out to Mr Odenkirk for his magnificent acting, gradually morphing into Saul as you've cleverly caught.

    I love how this show uses color. Jimmy wears red when dabbling in the criminal world, and blue when dabbling in the legal world. The fake news story anchor scene beautifully combines both aspects. Also notice how we don't get a wide shot of place until after Lalo gets there. Lalo sees the full picture unlike anyone else

    I get the impression from that last scene that Kim is almost afraid of being a bad influence on Jimmy. Like she takes responsibility for his morality, and if he slips, it’s her fault not his. So she’s willing to defraud her client, because she thinks she’s safe from being corrupted by it. She thinks if she lets Jimmy be knowingly involved, he’ll take that as endorsement and fall further.
    I think Jimmy kind of sets her up for this by being so deferential to her earlier in the episode. He’s so desperate for her approval he almost turns her into a mother figure, and she’s feeling responsible for him in a way that’s just not healthy for either of them.

    • @TylerAlexander
      @TylerAlexander  Před 3 měsíci +9

      I agree that Kim definitely has Jimmy and his poor self worth in mind, but personally what I drew back on during that moment in this episode is the moment in the diner last season. There's a conversation they have after the con for Mesa Verde and Kim says they can only con and use that sort of thing for the 'right cause'. I can't remember what phrase she used exactly, but Jimmy questioned her on it and asked whether carving out another chunk of pie for Mesa Verde was really so morally good. Kim gives him a look because she's not pleased with how he starts to hold her up to account and he backs off in the way he usually does.
      That's how I see this moment here, except Jimmy goes further. He presses the point further than he usually would rather than backing off (probably because he's in Saul mode and feeling more confident?). When he actually presses for the con Kim doesn't like it. She knows that the morality at play with their cons is flimsy, and she's always sensitive when he brings it up. I think part of this sensitivity in knowing it's wrong stems from her own morality and ideology that leans the other way to Jimmy's, and I think a big part of WHY she partook in his cons in the first place was for the reason you say - to cater to Jimmy's well-being. As much as I think she derives enjoyment from them as well, I don't think she truly aligns with the morality of these cons, and I think that's what we see in that last scene.
      The catalyst I think for the change in her here is his rapid descent into Saul and his tearing off from her to go his own way, which I think snapped her out of the mindset she'd been in that allowed her to compromise her morals to partake in the cons herself.
      I don't disagree that her concern for Jimmy isn't at play here, it absolutely is, but I think her reaction when he suggests conning the couple stems more so from her own ideology of 'that's not right', and she's more sober to that now considering the events of the last two episodes.
      At the same time as all this, I could totally see how she'd perceive this as a double edged sword she's now found herself being cut by. She did it originally to make him feel better, to lift him up, and perhaps now sees how she's liable to let him (like you say) slip further down this unhealthy road by giving into his wants in the way she did before, and how this WASN'T the right decision to make for his well-being all that time ago.

    Always cherish your reactions. I think another interesting way to read the fact that Jimmy doesn't use the coffee mug Kim gave him while pulling his magic man pull, it's him trying to keep Kim separate from the part of his life that's one foot in the game.

    I don’t think you included it but that final scene having the camera swing round Kim’s head showing Jimmy going into Saul mode (as well as the lighting you touched on with nacho) really cements this show as some of the best looking tv I’ve seen.

    What Kim did was wrong. It achieved the right outcome but lying to her client was unethical and wrong. But as Jimmy said, there was Mesa Verde and that was her idea. Kim is a very conflicted person.

    Ironic that in the very first episode Chuck told Jimmy he should "carve out his own identity" (under the guise of "Howard" having a problem with Jimmys practice being closely named to HHM).
    Also I personally read the not using Kims gift more surface level. He wants to present himself as the "magic man", best lawyer you can get, etc. Having something (even as a joke) to undermine that even a little might hurt that image. And also he treats it as quite an important and personal gift from Kim to Jimmy, not necessarily a gift to Saul (although maybe that idea doesn't fully work since he uses the JMM briefcase despite being Saul).

    31:11 for this comment gotta say, I think the more simple answer is that having a coffee cup that says “second best lawyer” would have the clients questioning who the best lawyer is, or Jimmy would have to explain it was a gift from his gf, regardless, much easier to just not have it

    Santiago is the capital of Chile. Remember in Breaking Bad Don Eladio says to Gus after killing his partner, "The only reason you are alive and he's not is because I know who you are. But understand, you are not in Chile any more."

    Re: your comment about Lalo being around still in Breaking Bad, that bit is unclear. Jimmy/Saul seems to believe he's still a threat because of what he says to Walt and Jesse, but late in season 4 when Gus talks to Hector after wiping out Don Eladio, he explicitly says that all the Salamancas are dead except for Hector ("the Salamanca name dies with you"). So it does leave a bit of mystery to this prequel story. Lalo is like Schrodinger's Salamanca. :)

We don't know Lalo's fate, which is what makes it exciting to see what's going to happen. The same can be said for Kim, Nacho, Howard, etc... The ones we know are safe are the ones we see again in Breaking Bad, such as Jimmy, Mike, Gus, etc...

    Mike punching Kai is some BS. Regardless of everything, you[Mike] are the embodiment of Werner being disappeared. Obviously Kai and the others smartest option is to say nothing, but you can't blame someone for trying to suck up to their prospective murderers.

      Mike is so interesting because there’s kind of this idea that he’s one of the “noble ones”, but he’s not. He’s a criminal who kills people to make money. His very last moment in the show in season six is incredible because his worldview is completely torn down by an actual good man. Such great writing.
