Yep, this movie is great, and its sequel too. It also directly follows this one, as it begins with signal from Ripleys pod being picked up by another ship returning to Earth from its mission, just like Nostromo was. But be prepared that the second movie (and there is an ongoing debate which one is better) has different tone. While this one was haunted house movie, the second is horror action movie. And it is VERY good with some truly iconic moments.

A fun thing regarding the filming process. While they actors had read the script and had some knowledge of the dinner scene, they were NOT given the exact specifics (other than John Hurt, who played Cane). The absolutely terrified looks on most of their faces are genuinely frightened looks, and it's one the best parts of the film.

A skeptic is boarding the "Nostromo." What will the yoot make of this "old, long, slow-moving, character-centered, no-DFX" movie? In 1979, TV and print ads gave us no idea about what kind of movie "Alien" was going to be. The "In space, no one can hear you scream" was all we knew. At one point, I doubted that anyone would survive, as in "Event Horizon" (1997). 4:20 The Company is making the equivalent of a freighter crew "do science" on an unexplored planet! 7:22 Canny observers saw Ash's "calisthenics" as suspect. 9:55 The Space Jockey, a mystery for decades. 11:22 Second Officer Kane = Zapp Brannigan. 12:21 The first jump scare. 12:31 This conversation has become iconic due to recent events. 13:35 The Face Hugger, grossing out audiences for decades. 14:55 Acid Blood! This is why they can't "just cut it off him." 18:40 A Props dept. work of ART, made of sea animals. 20:10 Kane's last meal. 21:05 The Xenomorph, scaring audiences for over 40 years. 22:09 Along came Jones. 23:23 Say hello to Bolaji Badejo. 24:33 How's that for a "syntax error"? 25:29 You're in command, Ripley. 27:30 In 1979, this was my "WTF? Ash ISN'T Human!?" moment. 28:49 Most didn't see this coming. 29:41 "The Thing" came out in 1982. 33:33 Yep, some reviewers of the time were convinced that Jones the cat was an Alien. (Idiots!;) 34:02 I've read that Lambert is standing in for us, the audience. 35:04 That is a Stinger. 35:54 Escape route cut off, stop Destruct to gain time for Plan B. 38:28 Tonight's entree on the shuttle"Narcissus" is Steamed Xenomorph in Shell. 39:03 Correction, Char-Broiled Xenomorph. This and the next movie made newcomer Sigourney Weaver a major movie star. Together with Linda Hamilton of "The Terminator" (1984), they became Action movie Badasses. "Jennifer Lawrence"? Who is that?

The others take Buffy for granted, she's been depressed and yes traumatized. Everyone has moved on with their lives, they're not getting her help (suggesting to her to talk to a counselor or a therapist) and they're not letting her go through grief because it makes them feel uncomfortable or annoyed. They want happy Buffy and don't wanna deal with her while she struggles, they blame her for it. Giles has been the only one who saw her pain and didn't have a go at her when she was at her lowest. I'm pissed Buffy was being gaslit and thought she's done something wrong. Even if the spell didn't work it's still a traumatic event.

It’s also worth considering the psychosexual elements of the film - there was a very clear understanding on the part of the designers and filmmakers on the queasy implications of the mix of phallic and vaginal imagery that makes up the creature in its various forms. The penetrative, thrusting mouth of the adult; the face hugger thrust deep down Hurt’s throat and leaving him with an unwanted pregnancy, the violent birth of another phallic symbol thrusting out of a man’s chest.

About the only thing that's dated on the capitalism message of the film is that the blue-collar workers were probably unionized and at least got shares in the mining haul thanks to that, whereas now they'd probably be on zero hours contracts, or be "self employed" and have to take on the expenses of doing business by bringing their own ship and fuel to work while the company takes most of the revenue as "platform fees". One thing you really notice on the film is just how great the lighting is. The scene where they first go outside, with the blue lighting of the mist and the warm yellow on the cast as they leave the ship... modern films would just slap a blue colour-grade over the entire scene "in post" and lose that sort of spot contrast. End of the film is somewhat predictable... because we live in a world where 45 years of films have turned to this one for inspiration as one of the best there is at doing suspense horror. It's a genre-defining movie, and its echoes are ones you'll have encountered in all forms of media.

Hi Tyler - great reaction to this classic masterpiece 👍🏻. Hope you consider to react to the sequel 'Aliens' as well. It is widely considered one of the best possible sequels to a movie franchise. If you do make sure to take the extended version of 'Aliens' cuz it paints a more complete picture of how the events take place. You might also want to check out the 2014 released videogame 'Alien: Isolation' which takes place between the events of Alien & Aliens Greetings from Germany PS: lookin' forward to your next Buffy episode as well

    • @Ylyrra

Extended version also destroys its own suspense by revealing some stuff (no spoilers!) WAY earlier than the theatrical release and completely screws with the pacing of the movie as a result, turning what should be a slow build into a protracted interlude. It's good for a second watch to get those missing scenes, but theatrical is far better story-telling for a first watch.

Fantastic reaction to one of my favourite movies. This is an early movie that shows "dirty space" or, indeed, "blue collar space"... no shiny silver corridors or smart military uniforms here. We've basically got truckers in space just trying to get their job done suddenly get trapped in a haunted house creature feature/slasher horror thanks to the uncaring forces of capitalism as represented by Mother and Ash. I never think the plot is so much "predictable" as "inevitable", but ironically it's when they show their humanity by bringing Kane back on board to try to save him, that they are doomed. Dan O'Bannon's script for Alien began with a note that said, “The crew is unisex and all parts are interchangeable for men or women”. Director Ridley Scott has maintained Ripley originally plotted as a man but changed early on in production, that none of the dialogue was rewritten when Sigourney Weaver was cast. She gives a landmark performance here and in Aliens (and it is often remarked that if everyone had listened to her character, they would have all survived). As ever, loving your work mate, really hope you react to Aliens too (very different movie but brilliant in its own right).

Word around the campfire is that the actors weren't told about the blood spurting stuff in the chest burster scene, so the reactions were real. Also, Ridley Scott does really pretty movies. The sets, the framing, the lighting, they way the camera moves, everything is just visually amazing. Also, also. You flew right past the single best 4th wall break in the history of movies and didn't notice. Don't feel bad, I hadn't realized until Dan Olson told me. czcams.com/video/XmOateL3ohI/video.html

There are some aspects of the film that are difficult to appreciate the way they would have been at the time. A big one is that Sigourney Weaver was a total unknown surrounded by recognisable character actors, so on a meta level, the film signposts you towards believing Ripley will be one of the first people to die - the actress is less famous and therefore more expendable. Since Ripley has become so iconic and Weaver is now the biggest star in the cast, that element is lost, but at the time, it was a genuine shock to have the heroic leading man captain played by a pretty famous actor die partway through and get replaced by someone who seemed very much like a side character in the first half an hour or so of the film, played by an unknown actress.

I also find it interesting (whether intentional or not) that all the white men die off first, including the robot made to look like a white guy. It's true though that the screenplay was written such that each role could be played by any race or gender (which was explicitly noted), so maybe just a coincidence.

yes, for me this is a very important aspect of this film. I watched it as a teenager about 1981 and I totally expected Dallas to be the survivor, perhaps surviving with a woman or the black guy or both and I was waiting for Riply to die because she was presented in a not very likeable way. It was a very good suprise to see her as the 'winner' and especially good to see her in her underwear lol (i was 13) so this is a very important point that is totally lost on people today because things like that have been nothing special for decades now.

It's recognised universally as a Masterpiece. And has been for 45 years.
