EUC Ride Modes and Effortless Acceleration

  • Electric unicycles have a few or more ride mode settings to choose from. The hard mode is named "Expert" in the KingSong app. Is it aptly named? Is that the one we should always use? If not, why not? How do I determine which setting to use on my GotWay/Begode, Veteran, KingSong, Inmotion, Ninebot, or any other wheel?

    I've been riding on expert mode on my KingSong all this time. I had no idea there was different modes. So, I tried all of them. The soft mode was not for me, but then I tried intermediate mode, and wow, it was great. I loved it. My feet no longer hurt as much anymore, and it's so much easier to accelerate and turn. It has made riding so much more fun and enjoyable. I hope all EUCs have different modes. I plan on buying a Lynx in the future.

      Glad you found the medium mode! It’s usually my recommendation for the exact reasons you described.
      Most EUCs have three modes, and they are of course different on each wheel model. Inmotions (since V10F) however have three sliders you can fine tune the response with, so you’re not limited by preset options.

    Excellent Mr Elwood. Thank you. It’s important some of this stuff is explained as I think so many simply buy a wheel, turn it on and try to ride without ever reading the instructions, doing any research or even knowing how the thing works.

    This has been great advice for me, and thanks for the explanation. I have to admit to putting my V12HT in off-road mode with 100% acceleration and braking + 100% sensitivity. Then I went to the default but used off-road and 100% sensitivity. But after watching this I spent some time reflecting on the way I ride, which is pretty laid back to be honest, although sometimes when I go off-road I kinda try and go for it. After trying commuter mode and different sensitivity settings, I've decided to stick with 70% sensitivity + commuter mode, which coincides with your recommendations. My ride feels far more stable and relaxed, which I guess matches my actual riding style a lot closer.

    • @mrelwood_EUC
      @mrelwood_EUC  Před rokem +1

      Yeah, the effect of the ride modes gets especially notable when you are riding a large and heavy wheel. I tried a Sherman S in hard mode the other day. That thing just did not accelerate!! My V11 is much peppier due to weight alone, and my ride mode settings are designed to lessen the effort to accelerate and brake. So the difference was outstandingly large.

    • @SpencerWheelman
      @SpencerWheelman Před rokem +1

      @@mrelwood_EUC I just went from MSX 100v with 3300 miles to a T4, (~55lbs to ~65lbs) and it takes way more effort to get near the same torque. The weight isnt much more, but the height of the T4 also contributes to needing more force to tip over. I have both in hard mode but after watching this, I'll try changing the T4 to soft :)

    • @mrelwood_EUC
      @mrelwood_EUC  Před rokem +1

      @@SpencerWheelman Don’t forget medium if the soft mode is too much! That’s actually surprising that the T4 requires more effort than the MSX, despite having a smaller tire diameter. One thing could be that all manufacturers have made the hard mode stiffer and stiffer year by year. So the hard mode on an MSX is very likely softer than that of the T4. Add also the weight and there you are.

    • @SpencerWheelman
      @SpencerWheelman Před rokem +1

      @mrelwood EUC Yea, it disappointed me how much less peppy the T4 is. Like it's not even close. That's a good point that the newer firmwares stiffness on hard mode might contribute. I've never heard anyone talk about that.

    Here is some info. I pilot a s22, I got the ironman pedals. The ironman pedals have a slightly raised toe and heel plates. I always rode on hard, on the new pedals just after a few days my toes hurt so badly I couldn't walk for 3 days. I came to a conclusion that the pedals were so hard and in combination of the raised plates it put to much strain on my toes. Put it in medium and never had an issue and don't notice a difference in acceleration or braking, and the ride is comfortable and I get a bit better range.

    • @mrelwood_EUC
      @mrelwood_EUC  Před rokem

      Good choice! But I do recommend that you get back to trying out various settings once you get more familiar and confident with the wheel. Split mode (or “assists”) especially is a thing for later examination. You’ll know when you long for different behavior for braking and accelerating.

    Thanks for the vídeo, I have a 16s and in "rider mode" (medium) I can achieve maximum acceleration with much less lean than on hard mode, and overall the wheel just feels better too. I would just add that there is a small delay in the softer modes between the lean and what the wheel does. Since I am not a racer, this is not a problem when it comes to acceleration, but there is a small delay when it comes to emergency breaking (a fraction of a second, but still). I imagine this is different for every wheel, but it is still something that I think about when riding in a softer setting in my wheel. Thanks again

    • @mrelwood_EUC
      @mrelwood_EUC  Před 11 měsíci +1

      The delay you mention could be the time the wheel lets you to get into the leaning position. Even though it feels like a delay, it will still probably make the braking faster.

  • @rayluo4665
    @rayluo4665 Před rokem +1

    Thanks for the insight! Question. On inmotion wheel, does the commuter mode and off-road mode overlap? For example, is the commuter mode with 100% pedal sensitivity equivalent to off-road mode's 40% sensitivity? Or is commuter 100% still softer than off-road 0%?

    • @mrelwood_EUC
      @mrelwood_EUC  Před rokem

      The input-output curves are different enough that they don’t really overlap or compare like that. The difference is not directly in the softness. But since the maximum tilt angle is so small at 100% pedal hardness on both, that’s where the difference is the smallest.
      How do you feel that they’d compare?

  • @milordas
    @milordas Před rokem +3

    i dont like my feets going down from horizon, so im using hard mode from beginning.. on soft mode when i start learning im always feel like slipping from pedals. Hard mode was much easer to learn and catch stable position

    • @mrelwood_EUC
      @mrelwood_EUC  Před rokem +1

      Soft mode is overdone on many wheels, which is why I recommend starting from the medium mode.

    • @mrelwood_EUC
      @mrelwood_EUC  Před rokem +2

      Yes, it actually does, since the wheel accelerates harder on each tiny bump. It of course depends on the wheel and firmware, but I used to gain about 10% more range on medium and maybe 13% more on soft compared to hard on the MSX.

    I'm still confused. I just have the Inmotion V12. So which way is soft mode, 0% or 100% pedal sensitivity? I started messing with the settings a few months ago, and my wheel rides terrible now. I've tried everything; default settings, experimenting, just like you suggested. I even tried turning off split mode.

    • @mrelwood_EUC
      @mrelwood_EUC  Před rokem

      0% sensitivity is the softest, 100% is the hardest.
      If you are lost with the settings, turning off the Split mode (or “assists”) is the first thing to do. Like I suggested in the video, put it on 70% Commuter and adjust from there if need be.
      If you have messed up other settings as well, check that the forward tilt is at a sensible setting, and calibrate the wheel.
