Well, after failing 2 times on this watering hole, I'm elevating it to the next, and last level... Pond Liner!!!! Watch the fun day unfold as I show just how to DIY a pond liner with some tips, how the action unfolds, and of course some fun along the way. Here are the 2 videos that precede this one:
Digging watering hole: • Digging Rocky Ridge to...
Adding Bentonite to watering hole: • New Deer Watering Hole...
It will be great if the liner holds and seals the leaks over time. It may give the bentonite a chance to seal the cracks in the rocks and organic soil. Good luck on the pond.
Lots of work.... but it's fun work. I too like to sit and admire my accomplishments. If it's worth do'n, it's worth staring at it for awhile. lol
Man I'd be sitting in that pond after a long day of doing that sipping on a cold one!
Ryan Hoover I wanted to! I even brought shorts but was so tired, I didn't feel like it...
All that back pain will be forgotten as soon as you see that first buck headed to your new watering hole. lol
Nice peaceful place
Scott Loescher thanks, that's how we wanted it :)
Will be interesting to see how it holds up to the deer punching holes in the liner. Hopefully it all works out.
Scott Davis I read a bunch of reviews from people that have heavy Labrador Retrievers playing and jumping in it and did not puncture it. hope so!
Kapper Outdoors hopefully with the added weight of the liner filled with water and the bentonite, the pond will stay full even if it is punctured.
Exactly what my thoughts were is how's it going to hold up with deer walking through there and puncturing holes through the liner
In the future if you need to seam two liners; I've found that butyl tape will do the job very well and cheaply (about $6.00 for 45 feet at Home Depot).
Kapper Outdoors it's very thick and flexible, used to seal foundations to prevent moisture issues below grade.
Hey Joe, will the deer go in the pond to drink and will their hooves tear teh liner as a result? What can be done to keep that from happening?
Great Questions... As far as the hooves, they should not puncture it. I have installed this same liner at another location and it has held up for a year so far. I've also read many reviews from folks who have large dogs that splash and play in this liner and has not torn... As far as if they go in to drink, that is yet to be seen. They love going in my other ponds, but I think they are a little leary of the weird black thing laying in it... I put 2 cameras up to see whats been happening the last couple weeks. Heck, maybe today I'll go change the SD cards for an update! ? I'll keep you posted!
We just put in our first deer pond several weeks ago. Any learning you can pass forward after several seasons?
Congrats! Here is my philosophy, and others might not agree but this is my reasoning. I put watering ponds near food plots, as just another thing to keep deer longer. Also, they really seem to like catching a drink when hitting the food plots. Also, I try to make them as deep as I can get them and in the shade. If you make them large enough and deep enough you can water your food plot during severe droughts if you get desperate. Best of luck! Thanks
Omg hung like a fire hose. Totally looks like ur taking a leak at 9:00 minutes in. Too funny, good vid!
kapper you need to put underlayment under that liner! its cheap insurance from sticks, roots, and rocks
bwilkinson6901 point taken, but in this case I raked the entire bottom and picked it clean of all rocks underneath of it
@@kapperoutdoors that wasn’t raked and if it was it’s not good enough.
Hey buddy just curious if you do it that way by trapping the water what keeps it from becoming stagnant because of the lack of water flow?
Jett4you it will get water flow during heavy rains so there will be constant water coming into it over the weeks and months
Ok gotcha buddy!
Jett4you but in long non rain periods it can get stagnant. that's the beauty of having an excavator though, if it is not getting enough runoff I can always dig shallow trenches and divert the rain water into it :-)
How has it held up over the years?
still there and holding water! In hindsight wish I'd have made it a tad deeper, but the deer still love it! Problem is, they wade in it a lot and poop and pee! But they still keep drinking it...
I hope you remembered to bury the edges after you had your cocktail. lol. It looks like I should hold up though.
LOL, No I actually didn't! Once I sat down, that was it man, I was wiped out! I'm hoping to go back and add a couple of pieces of pond fabric when the water goes down a little to bring the level up 4 to 5 inches..
where does your water line come from kapper don't see a well house, you that close to the city.
walter williams we are WAY out in the sticks. there are regional water districts, kind of unreal in such a rural area, I've never seen it. buried line throughout the whole area (s)
How does the deer use it?
They love it! Can't keep them out of it!
How is that liner holding up? And how long does it hold water in dry weather?
you can do it yourself ,just go to inplix page and learn how to make it.
forget the home depo liner nonsense. find your local aquascapes dealer and buy superior liner and proper underlayment whatever size you need. no seams and a liner as thick as a tractor innertube
bwilkinson6901 if I'd have known I would have, but this was the best I could find!
