  • With the whitetail hunting season fast approaching, make sure you take the time to check on your waterholes. If not properly maintained, the waterhole will not be as attractive to the deer throughout the fall months. In this video we discuss a few things we make sure to check before the season opens.

    Seems like good practical advice to me!

    Dry is a understatement for us down here in the S/W. 😥 I had a failed plot for lack of rain. I reseeded last Thursday. Finally got some rain as you know on Friday. Need to keep it coming though. Water holes are great. I cut a 5” pvc pipe in half and made a 3’ drain trough to help gather the rain. Doesn’t help much when there isn’t any. Lol. Usually keeps it full all summer. Not this year.

      That's a great idea! I need to do something like that to help catch water. But like you said it's hard to catch water when it doesn't rain.. hopefully we get more consistent rainfall headed into the fall. the food plots need it!

    After the water hole install was there an break in period for the deer to get used to it ? Or did they come right in ?

    What does the stick do in the water, how close do you hunt near it,great interesting facts thanks, good luck this year

      Great questions Joe! So the stick is placed in the waterhole to help any animal that might fall in while getting a drink. if the water level is too low they would have a hard time getting out without the stick. If anything were to drown in the tank the water would become contaminated and nothing would want to drink from it until you replaced the water. So the stick helps prevent that.
      As far as hunting, the stand behind me is about 25 yards away on the downwind side of a major deer trail. The thought process is that the deer will come down the trail to get a drink and then continue to a food plot.
      Good luck this season too!

    Do you do anything to prevent mosquitoes and algae growth?

    How far is your closest source of natural water? Creek, pond, etc

    • @whitetailevolution
      @whitetailevolution  Před 2 lety +1

      We have a pond about 200 yards in one direction and we have a small creek (dried up this year) about 400 yards in another direction.

    in the words of the classic movie toy story... Someone poisoned the waterhole! what do you do during hunting season if the water level is to low? will you do a quick top off or just wait it out?

      Woody knows his stuff!! But no, after Labor Day we don’t do anymore habitat work and that includes topping off the water holes. If the water levels happen to get low during the season the deer will have to make do.. we don’t want to risk spooking them off the property doing work during the season. It’s normally ok though, we get a lot more rain during the fall as opposed to the summer months.
