- Banjaiga's OpenHouse 23 features the beautiful country house of Ar. Arif Masoud, Situated in Tumair, Islamabad.
Arif Masoud started his professional career in 1975. 20 years later he still did not have any house of his own in Pakistan. His Mother (like all mothers) wished for him to have one in his home country... The year was 1994, when her wish came true. He knew she would be happy if he gets a “plot” in the beautiful city of Islamabad... but he also knew that she would be more happier if he gets a bigger piece of “Farm land" where she can have a life full of Life of her own !
Therefore, he opted to go half hour outside the city limits of Islamabad (but still within the Capital territory) to a place called Tumair. Though it was distant, but she loved his move.
The 20 kanal land already had a chicken poultry SHED upon it. (Measuring 100’x30’)… This became an interesting Design challenge for him.. He had to have a contemporary style of living but with a “Country” flavoured of Design. The answer lied in “adaptive re-use”. He had to have a connection of his life with Nature. He had to provide “wheelchair walkways” throughout the farm land so that his mother can re-live her childhood time spent on a similar farm somewhere else... He planted trees of choice, plants of color and fragrance, brought in chirping birds, and swimming Ducks, Etc... All that is a part of Country Living... 25 years down the branch of Life, Now in 2021, BANJAIGA went to his abode and tried to capture a small essence of his Country Home...

Glad to see Respected Arif Masoud Sahab, after long time. I am at loss of words to describe his personality. I am fortunate that I have worked under him, he never made us feel that he is our Boss, he was the Director of Design in one of the reputed Architectural consultants of Middle East in Jeddah Saudi Arabia, Zuhair Fayez and Associates, now it is Zuhair Fayez Partnership, for more than two decades. During his tenure our firm won, many competitions at local and International level. Very simple down to earth personality, he has very good sense of humour. He never discriminates with anyone, at that time we have staff from many countries and everyone respects him. He always held his mother in high esteem, till her last breath he was with her Mother. I never saw such a person who always with her mother. Also his son is a an Architect, Kashif. Long Live Arif Sahab.

I have been living in islamabad but did not had the idea of design philosophy, thought behind and meaning of islamabad monument architecture. Thank you @banjaiga for sharing the stories of such masterpieces with non-architecture students like me. Just getting addicted to this open house series.
P.S. make it more consistent and reduce the gap between two episodes :) :)
The maintenance and repair of this monument and other prominent buildings but particularly this monument should be pursued vigorously, one minute the Govt is chasing and promoting tourism and on the other hand big tourist attractions are left to decay. What a "Bayhis" approach.
I got touched by the values Ar. Arif Masoud Sahab has inculcated in his life. His imperishable love and respect towards his mother was another reason compelling me to watch the entire video. Building a house is not a big deal for an architect, but making a home is. A home demands love, care, and respect. So it is said, "Home is where the heart is." This episode was indeed a learning experience for me. Regards to Ar. Masoud Sahab.

Arif sb is a living legend. Pakistan monument is the best architecture of Pakistan. It inspires me all the time. Apart from all Arif sb is very humble and loving person.
