Jurassic Park from director Steven Spielberg is one of the most critically acclaimed movies of all time, so it’s only natural that Universal wanted to make a sequel. Making the beloved side character Ian Malcolm, played by Jeff Goldblum in the main character seemed like a no-brainer.
But The Lost World: Jurassic Park definitely raises some questions, other than the strangely structured title. Like why have we never heard of this secondary island before? What kind of a person secretly goes to a dinosaur island knowing the her boyfriend has lived through very significant dinosaur-related trauma? Why is there a little girl in this movie? What’s up with all the characters making insane decisions leading to death-by-dinosaur? Why are we in San Diego?
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the pitch meeting that led to The Lost World: Jurassic Park! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

It took me 18 years to realize the "Alan" scene was set up in the dinner at Ellie's house. He's trying to get her parrot to say "Alan" because it used to know him. They later talk about how smart raptors were and later still Billy shows him a 3D model of a raptor's vocal chamber. Throw in how raptors were basically prehistoric birds and the dream makes sense.

Just FYI, since a lot of people don't know this: Michael Crichton wrote the original script for the novel Jurassic Park in the early 1980s as a child friendly adventure novel from the prespective of a child since he was inspired to write the story at all due to the amazement he witnessed children all over the world have with dinosaurs. Every publisher he went to turned him down but without telling him why until years and several rewrites later, one finally told Crichton that he would never get Jurassic Park published if it is told from the perspective of a child. So he rewrote the novel to be hard science fiction, horror-thriller and it got picked up and published in 1990.
Back then he was already friends with Spielberg and the two were working on a project based on an old screenplay by Crichton called 24 Hours that would later turn into the tv series ER. Crichton told Spielberg about Jurassic Park and Spielberg was interested in directing it, causing Crichton to make sure that Spielberg and Universal would get the film deal and no other studio or director. Spielberg then gave the film the feeling of awe and wonder back that Crichton wanted to have in the novel originally. He also shifted some of the focus back onto the children and reduced the gore and horror elements. And to honour this original vision of a child-friendly novel told from the perspective of a child, every single Jurassic Park film, even the short film Battle at Big Rock, has children, regardless if it really makes sense to have them in there or not.

My favorite part of the movie was how the. Raptor understood English and actually turned around when Ian's daughter yelled "Hey, you!" then waited patiently for her to finish swinging and flipping on the bar before she kicked him.

It's a pity, cause the book was a decent sequel

The book was quite frankly a mess and screws up the continuity with the original way more than the film does in relation to the first film. The thing that makes it work is that Crichton's writing is very self-aware, something that got completely lost in the adaption, only to be then used in Jurassic World, where it somehow flew over a lot of people's heads who criticised the film for being a commentary on the nature of sequels while being absolutely self-aware that it was just that.

Mario Quade The book was actually being written as the movie was being made, which is why they are similar but different after a certain point in the story.

"So it killed everyone on the boat and went back in the cargo hold and closed the door?"
That cracked me up so much!
p.s: What about a Pitch Meeting where nothing is pitched? Oh wait. I uploaded that. 😏
