As of now, Panasonic has not made any official announcements regarding the release of a GX9 Mark II. The GX9, a popular choice for street and travel photography, has been well-received, leading to speculation and hope among photography enthusiasts for an updated version.
The reasons for the delay or lack of an announcement could be varied:
Market Conditions: Panasonic might be assessing the market demand and competition before launching a new version.
Technological Advancements: They may be waiting to incorporate new technology or improvements that will make the Mark II significantly better than the GX9.
Strategic Decisions: The company might have other priorities or product lines they are focusing on at the moment.
Supply Chain Issues: Global supply chain disruptions could also play a role in delaying new product releases.

You are completely right with your prognosis. I think at the moment we have to be content with what we have or spend a huge amount of money for the top cameras GH7 or G9 mark 2. I still have a GH2 that works fine!

The "Full Frame or nothing" - campaign ever since DSLRs came out has made everyone believe they need full frame when probably 95% needs MFT - or who remembers the 1" sensors - how great would a tiny Canon Ixus be today with some AI magic? But market economy doesn't care about what people need but how to force feed us whatever brings the profits.

That is the reason why i buyed enough M43 cams most at second hand market.I have two GX9 GM5 one GX880 , GX8 and the GM1.My first new cams was the GM1 and later the first GX9 Kit with 14/140 lens.
Now i have a good fit out.But if i need in the future a camera with the new specs specially af performance than i will buy a Fujifim camera.
    Best regards from Germany

As a GM5 user, I always thought the GX7-9 was simply too bulky. Nowadays I would be happy for a new GX. Or a new version of the best (looking) MFT camera ever: the Olympus PEN F. But OM refuses like Pana to care for the 'real' (TM) ;-) ;-) MFT users obviously. I ended buying a Olympus E-P7 and I'm very happy with it, almost as happy as I would have been with a GX10 or PEN F II.

I also don't think it's likely to come out. I've got watch lists on Ebay, KEH, and MPB for the GX9 and a few other smaller M:43 cameras including back to the GF series of cameras, but ultimately even since the GH5 days Panasonic was already going for the larger body more premium cameras only and they've mostly doubled down on that. That's why I moved over to Fuji where I'm getting a larger sensor for the size increase while keeping most of my lenses on the smaller size for the focal lengths I shoot at. For Nostalgia sake I'm likely to keep a small M:43 body once I find and settle on one, but for my path forward for the moment it's Fuji. Panasonic might eventually win me back over with some more development of real time LUT and maybe an S9ii if they expand their smaller full frame lens lineup. Until then I'll be happy with my Fuji cameras and maybe some used M:43 gear if I can find some that's not going to just sit on a shelf.

I'm sad that a GX9 mark II isn't coming. As you explained well, Lumix has taken a different path. at the same time I'm happy to have exchanged my GX9 for a G90. I always thought that the G90 was much larger and heavier, but I pleasantly discovered that it is very compact and light. With the GX9 I wasn't very comfortable when I had to use the 12-35 or the 35-100; it was excellent with 12-32 20 14 etc., but with heavier excellent ones it is too unbalanced. Furthermore, what made me abandon the GX was the viewfinder, nothing like that of the GX8. Furthermore, I all have tropicalized lenses: with a non-tropicalized body they make little sense. Too often I have encountered sudden rain. I was eagerly waiting for an update to the GX with a good viewfinder

I'm not so sure, they didn't really make money on the first one and that was released at a time when sales in digital cameras were still flying. Now OM System is run by a Venture Capital company with a remit not to lose money in a challenged industry heading into a bad recession. I think if we see another Pen camera with a viewfinder at all, it will probably be more like the EP7 with a viewfinder tacked on, i.e. cheaper construction and milking the parts bin.

Despite being a Fuji user, the GX9 is the camera I use the most for street photography and it is never missing in my travels either.
For my taste it has only 3 shortcomings. One is acceptable, as is the quality of the viewfinder. The other frustrating: the absence of joystick to move the focus point and the impossibility to know the focus distance in manual, so important to work in hyperfocal.
    Otherwise a great camera.

I really hope you are wrong, because as a owner of a Fuji X-H2S that’s the camera i’m waiting for. A M4/3 pocketable camera and what make me think you’r wrong it’s because today tendance are in pocketable camera in alternative to smartphone, Leica just launched the D-Lux 8, Sony the ZV-E10 II, OM system with the Tough TG-7 and according to Fuji Rumor we can expect an X-M5 to be Launched in Second Half of 2024. M4/3 is the perfect system for pocketable

So happy I picked up my GX9 from KEH, looks news and just a few hundred shutter actuations. I see this camera by my side for years to come, and if I ever need any higher resolution files, I have de noise software from 3 providers and gigapixel , they work great in post. But I really want to challenge myself to shoot for the jpg output on this camera, it is definitely capable of amazing photos!

The Ricoh GR3 and the Fuji 100 are incredibly successful. The GX9 is a similar camera but with interchangeable lenses. Should be a success. I want to buy a used one. Very expensive!

  • @damianip
    @damianip Před měsícem +2

I don’t think it’s a matter of cost, even. My GX9 when I bought it with the kit lens was 1000USD. Adjusted for the US CPI, that would be about 1250 USD today: not that inexpensive. I think most manufacturers have abandoned the concept of a straightforward photography-centric body with only the essential features. Adding advanced video features drives up the cost, size, weight and a need for effective heat management. That said, my EDC/travel cameras are my GX9 and 2 GX8s (which was the Lumix flagship when it was released). I will use them until they die. I don’t think we will see this type of camera any more due to perceived market demand: more of everything and the best specs.

From Panasonic and Olympus’ recent releases I think you are correct that there will be no GX9ii or PenFii. But does it really matter? I recently had a GX9 and a Fuji X100f (plus a G9) and decided I didn’t need them both. The GX9 is a good camera if used with shorter focal length lenses with Grant and myself favouring the 15mm PanaLeica. All the zooms were better handled on the G9 which had a much better viewfinder experience than the GX9, as did the Fuji X100f. In reality there wasn’t much benefit to the GX9 and a self limited 15mm lens over the fixed lens of the Fuji (30 or 35 mm full frame equivalent). So, for me, the compact camera slot was better served by the X100f so I sold the GX9 and have no regrets. Decision paralysis removed. Out for the day > X100f; serious photography trip > G9 and a set of zooms. It works for me.

Build quality may not be as good as the Pen F but it is still more than acceptable.

Look at how long Panasonic insisted on using DFD CAF until they finally caved to the demands for PDAF. I think the same will happen with a new GX9 or GM5. But it would probably be a one time special edition type of thing. Too many people want a smaller AND cheaper camera and probably not happening in the current market anymore IMO.

Regrettably Grant I think you're likely right about no future successor to the GX9. My ideal would be a weather sealed GX9 with the 27mp sensor of the G9II and the flip n' rotate screen like the GX8. I'd also like to see All-I 10 bit 4:2:2 recording, but likely too much heat and power for a small body and battery to handle.
I've been seriously considering the full-frame S5, but it's 24mp and the GX8-GX9 are 22mp, (which I get using Capture One), so other than shallower depth-of-field, lower noise and maybe some better optical performance and being able to use some of my beloved old full-frame lenses, I' wondering if image quality is going to be much better than with an G9 II? Considering the high cost of the S5 body and L-mount lenses, the extra weight the S5 does not motivate me over the G9 II, but I like a high-megapixel full-frame for large prints and portraits. So the Sony fills the gap at a low price point.
Is weight a big factor for you Grant? I just did two, 2-hour casual shoots this weekend in in 100F (38C) dry heat. Friday I shot with the LX100 for web and CZcams content. The LX100 with 21-70mm equivalent f1.7 lens, a Zoom H1n and small shotgun on an l-grip was very handy and comfortable interviews, B-roll and stills, no sore feet and back, and it all fit in a small fanny pack.
Sunday, I used a Sony A7R with a 24-70 and lightweight 70-120mm zooms, plus a 50mm f/1.7 packed into a shoulder reporter bag, and after an hour and a half I was sweaty and beat. Today, my shoulder, neck and back were feeling the pain.
The Lumix M4/3 14-45mm Pancake zoom is a brilliant and overlooked lens, as it's same weight and size as the 20mm f/1.7 pancake, and nearly as sharp, it with the 20mm, the Olympus 45mm f/1.7 and/or the feather-light Olympus ED 40-150mm f/4-5.6 kit lens I find the ideal all-day package.

I fear this is true. I am reluctant to buy any more M43 gear until I know there will be some small bodies still made as that is what I like to use. I will just carry on with what I have. I suppose its saving me a lot of money. in the future if nothing happens I may at some point have to move to a different format. I think Panasonic and OM solutions as they are now are missing a great opportunity. If small M43 cameras were not popular the used ones would not be going for the insane prices they are.

Canon R10 II is not happening either I think. The buzz has turned into crickets. The only items I am hearing about are the R5 and R1. It looks like all the camera manufacturers are abandoning the entry-level markets and even the mid-range markets. But given sales, this may not be surprising. I think once the iPhone 16 comes out most of the lower, entry and midrange cameras are finished. January 2025 will be the beginning of a new dawn for mirrorless high-end cameras. If you don't have $2500+ for a camera you're using your phone.

You are wrong. Panasonic can't live with flagship only in MFT and without flagship cameras in the l-mount.
Of course the praise the latest cameras and since they got the sensor from the GH6 now perfected with PDAF and much better DR-boost they use it in the larger G9-II and GH7 to create revenue. The next steps in MFT can't be new flagship models. They need now to get the higher volume in numbers with affordable smaller cameras like a new G95 and GX9.
In the l-mount it's the complete opposite. Panasonic perfected the old 24MP sensor with PDAF and produced the S5-II, S5-IIX and now on the low end the S9. The S5-II is so good, that people almost forgot that the sensor is very old and slow. The next steps in the l-mount will be new flagship models with much faster readout, higher pixel count and features that blow our minds.
So we should stop wining and use what is available and wait for the inevitable: new cameras filling the gaps.
