    We are Italian (and yes, our English sucks).
    We have been coming to the Czech Republic every year for thirty years, and we tell you that the Czechs should be proud of how they have rebuilt their country. We remember well the empty shops, the dilapidated houses, and even the golden door of the St. Vitus Cathedral when it was not gold.
    Over the years, we have seen the Czech Republic change for the better, each trip a little more, and it has been fantastic.
    But this is still not enough: after the 2002 flood, the nation was perfectly cleaned up in a few months, which denotes a great desire to recover from every disastrous event.
    And then you should be proud because you have always fought for freedom in every historical era.
    If that's still not enough for you, then you should be proud of Dvořák, Smetana, Neruda, Aleš, Mucha, Švabinský and all the great artists of your beautiful country... and let's not forget the price of beer!🤩
    P.S.: once upon a time, Google Maps and Google Translator did not exist. In that distant time, the Czechs, even if it was difficult to understand each other, never denied help to poor tourists lost in the void in Cesky Raj.🤭

      "We" who? It seems you can speak it and I can speak it as well. So why to exaggerate it negatively always? Do you think that random Czechs in small villages in the countryside they all speak English? Or what about the German guy that answered "I speak Deutschland"? According to Eurostat, there are at least 6-7 European countries with a higher number of people that don't speak any other language, compared to Italy.
      They rebuilt well the city also thanks to European Community funds, like most of Eastern capitals (of course, they could have used those money in worse ways, instead they used it well, at least for what a tourist can see).

    I'm Czech. What I'm proud of is the Czech mentality. We are down-to-earth, quite tolerant and peaceful, mostly embodying the motto "live and let live". Even when overthrowing a totalitarian regime, we managed it mostly peacefully. When splitting with Slovakia, we parted as friends. We've endured invaders and totalitarian regimes but they didn't break us. They're all gone, we're still here. When we had to fight for our freedom, we fought too, but it was always to save our home. We don't fight for conquest, we never had any colonies. We just want to live and do our thing.

    • @Gosudar
      @Gosudar Před měsícem +1

      "we never had any colonies." Well, we had Slovakia and Subcarpathian Ruthenia, so... :) At least during the first decades of Czechoslovakia it was in many ways a colonial endeavour. Czech soldiers were followed by Czech bureaucrats, teachers, physicians, architects, industrialists, etc. It was perceived by many, especially in Slovakia, as a form of colonial rule.
      Also, lets not forget the small Austro-Hungarian concession in Tianjin (1901-17). It was headed by a Czech for four years. :)
      So, yeah, nothing comparable to the British or the French, but still.

    • @MarvinCZ
      @MarvinCZ Před měsícem +2

      @@Gosudar No, I totally disagree with that. Both of those nations decided it would be to everyone's benefit if they shared a common country with the Czechs. There was no subjugation or conquest. And when they decided they didn't want to be in the country anymore, they freely left. If some Slovaks didn't like it, they should have talked with their representatives who came to us to arrange it. Part of it was also how very backwards Slovakia was - in order to get up to speed, they needed people to come over and help.
      I also refuse any responsibility for Habsburg conquests. We had no hand in that, even if a particular bureaucrat put into place there happened to be Czech. It wasn't our conquest. We were just one among the nations the Habsburgs ruled over and used.

    • @Gosudar
      @Gosudar Před měsícem

      @@MarvinCZ Well, noone really asked either Czechs or Slovaks (or Germans, Poles, Ruthenians, Hungarians, etc) whether they wanted to be part of Czechoslovakia or not. The majority of people had no say in this. Which was perfectly normal throughout history all over the world. Also, there was a conquest, Slovakia and Ruthenia belonged to Hungary and they wanted to keep them. Slovakia was literally fought over. I am not saying it was a colony per se. But many aspects of the Czech/Czechoslovak rule there were perceived as colonial in nature.
      You can say that about almost any colonial conquest of any power in history. Common people/subjects had no say in these matters and only a handful really profited from them. It was as much our conquest as Spanish America and British India were conquests of the Spaniards and Britons.

      @veronikamullerova7033 Před měsícem +2

      I like the idea of the Czechs as a peaceful, even dove-like nation. Then one looks further into the past and sees a clash of religious wars, through the conquest of the south, through participation in the Crusades, through the lucrative trade in Slav slaves. Yes the 30 year war changed us a bit, but when one looks at the nationalism of the 19th century, which culminated in the seizure of part of the territory by a neighboring state and the subsequent expulsion of 1/3 of the population, I have little doubt.
      That doesn't mean it's wrong. Not at all. We're just like any other nation. We have our successes and failures. We can stand up in difficult times, negotiate or surrender and still be here. On the other hand, I wouldn't make us out to be innocent because we can be real fanatics when it comes down to it.

    I'm a Dutchman, from the Netherlands. I've been to the Czech Republic a couple of times. I think the Czechs should be proud of the beautiful architecture. When I think of the Czech Republic, I think of beautiful castles and richly decorated houses all over the country. I think the Czechs should be proud of their resilience. As an editor of the Dutch Wikipedia, I wrote articles about Božena Němcová, Milada Horaková, Jindřich Svoboda (pilot), Arnošt Lustig, Josef Škvorecký, Tomáš Baťa, Ema Destinnová, etc. and they were all resilient people who made this world a bit more beautiful or better. Another thing, the Czech Republic is safe. I never felt unsafe anywhere in Czech Republic. I also like the attitude of the Czechs, they do not smile too much, but they're honest and work hard. And again we had upgrade it many levels up - to pust inside an Ice cream and cover with fruits/nuts/choco/wafers etc.. and tens of people are in lines in front of every stabd with trdelník.. same with gernna origin dishes based on cabbage, perk knee, pizza, langoš, waffles and many moore - all of them prepared CZECH STYLE are way better than its originals like beer, vine or spirits/pálenka of any fruit / - on the other hand hungarian sausages have been long time very poopular here - Pick, Csabai etc. and i love those venison sausages fron the shop in metro station in Népliget bus station.

    I think that Prague is the most beautiful city I have ever seen, and I can't wait to come back! I am from the USA/Dutch dual national.

    From Toronto, Canada. I agree with the food (and beer). Like most other countries that aren't France and Italy, you rarely hear someone rave about Czech food internationally. It is incredible! One of the many reasons I keep returning. We had a Czech restaurant here from 1968-2012 that made the best dishes and when they closed, I was heartbroken.

    I’m from UK. You should be proud of your beautiful city of Prague. Every time you turn a corner, there’s more amazing architecture. You should be proud of the overall cool vibe of Prague. You should be proud that you’re a relatively welcoming place for LGBTQ people, with a higher Gay Happiness Index score than countries in Eastern Europe, higher than the UK and the US. PS One of my favourite authors, Milan Kundera, is Czech.

      Great words, just a note - please do not title us as an Eastern Europe nation, we are Central Europe..
      We have been par of the Holy Roman Empire for about 1000 years, just sadly from 1948 till 1989 part of the Warsaw pact occupied by the USSR, meaning behind the Iron curtain....
      We are extremely touchy on that and when you consider how much we're doing for Ukraine, we would really love to be taken as part of the West...
      We have even in 2023 elected a former head of the NATO military commitee as our president...

    Jan Švankmajer
    The Famous Czech animator, if it wasn't for his many excellent stop frame animations ,Through him, I became interested in Czechoslovakia, as it was in the 1980s when a UK tv channel started broadcasting Channel 4 they showed different programming to the other channels, In that you needed more than one brain cell to watch them (Mainly ITV) I Visited Jan Švankmajers studio shortly after the Berlin wall came down as was lucky enough to meet him.
    My most favourite short from him is called Breakfast (Food) 1992.

    I just came back from a trip to Brno and Prague. I've lived a long time ago in Brno(loved your Brno video and I went to that students kavarna, the kids were very polite) and never actually knew Prague well, I knew only the most touristy part. I can still speak some broken czech with my balkan accent. Thanks to your videos I've managed to avoid the top tourist spots this time and have a bit more local expirience, off the usual path. I also had a good number of pubs recomended by a czech friend. I've seen some of them recomended by you as well. Speaking some czech in a non-toursity pub definitely helps and softens the waiters' attitude. It's unfortunate, but I also understand why they are a bit apprehensive with foreigners overrunning the place. Not everyone loves 20 english lads having a stag do, shouting and spilling beer everywhere. So I went to a recommended pub in Mala Strana, I'm not gonna dox it as I actually liked it, but there was a bit of caveat for tourists. I took 2 beers of the bar, paid and sat down on a free table with my friend. Some english speaking group were chased away from the table next to us by the waiter - it wasn't reserved, but he told them there is a line and they have to wait to be seated. He then turned to us and asked if we have paid for the beers at the bar(as apprently we skipped the mentioned mythical line) in czech to which I confidently responded yes and asked for the menu and he just gave it to me after an odd look telling me "I know you're not czech, but OK" without actually saying it. Then I ordered tatarak and it was all good. Meanwhile nobody ever sat on that big table next to us and there was no line at all or at least I couldn't see it. There was a polish couple on another small table next to us, the guy was doing the same as me - speaking confidently in messed up czech and asserting his place and it worked for them too. There are such places, where if you are not accompanied by a local, or can speak some czech you'll feel rejected. But if you manage to get trough the filter they are a a gem, not to mention the lower prices. I've seen reviews by westerners and asians describing having horrible expiriences in such places, including on Pppeter's chanel. I'd say the truth is somewhere in the middle - it definetley exists, but it's not as bad as some tourists claim it is. 17 years ago when I lived in Brno it was way worse. In night clubs you were straight told off - "no foreigners allowed" by the bouncers, one even had it written on a sign at the door.
