I think generally it's not a fair comparison. It's somewhat false in the us service industry, due to the tipping culture it pays to be overly hospitable, where as the uk tipping is rare, so when you get good service it feels more authentic. Don't get me wrong this is generalised, and there are ofc workers who do a great job regardless :)

Love The Suburbs and THE 96 Open Spaces near me including 185 Acre Park just 50 yards away and I love visiting friends in Kent and West Sussex and The South Downs but equally enjoy my returns to the most stimulating city in the World with over 100,000 "Places Of Interest" and next week I will return to walk round Hampstead and The Heath. Hospitality means something different to Americans than tot he British.
To Americans it is being disingenuously "nice" as though someone is your best friend that is a complete stranger. A waiter mithering you with his personal life and anyone in services telling you to have a nice day with a painted smile as they hold their hand out.
To a Brit it is being polite and well mannered while ensuring you do not invade peoples privacy with idle chit chat.
Maybe the privacy thing goes to the heart of it. It is a huge deal in Britain, maybe because it is a small nation with small houses crowded together and it comes from the social comprises that are required in those situations for peaceful coexistence.
If you look at the cramped poorer neighbourhoods in the US and compare with those in the UK then there is no doubt in my mind where I would prefer to live.
Politeness and respect are the cornerstones of civil society and I think British hospitality requires those are earned first before a opening up on a more personal level.
Then again we could make a case for the weather playing a big part. It is hard to be sociable and chatty when it is tipping down and blowing a gale.🤣
People are always more relaxed and outgoing in warm sunny weather.
Either way it is fascinating cultural difference given the US has such a close cultural relationship to Britain.

Maybe as a tourist it might be ok. But if you actually live in the UK. You will find people are not as friendly as Americans think they are. Also if they lived in the UK longer than being a tourist they will discover good number of people in UK don't like Americans. But generally speaking in my opinion I don't think the people in UK are as hospitable or friendly or as good natured as people in the U.S. many have big egos about the UK to the level beyond many Americans even though the U.S. as a country is way way ahead in almost everything than the UK. They once were great no doubt beyond the greatness of the Roman Empire (by the way I never think Empires are great just a way for the few to exploit the many), but not anymore to justify the big egos many people UK have about the UK and its place in the world, just my opinion from living in UK a long time. It is also climate wise a much gloomier country than the U.S. The sun does not shine as well in the UK compared with most of the U.S. which adds to people being a pissed most of the time about things. You have to be tough and have a thick skinned and mentally strong if you want to live and prosper in the UK. People here can be tough. Weather can be tough and things a l lot of the time don't work the way you want them to which can add to the frustration of living here. Like you guys said, "..English hospitality is not top notch here" or customer service is not that satisfactory here. On top of that its a pricey country to live in which constantly puts pressure on your finances. I am sure it might be a different experience for other people who probably like it more.
