I was brought up here and I love the British people. They are friendly and fair in general My mother was brought up in Birmingham and my father was in Wales to begin with. I think generally it's not a fair comparison. It's somewhat false in the us service industry, due to the tipping culture it pays to be overly hospitable, where as the uk tipping is rare, so when you get good service it feels more authentic. Don't get me wrong this is generalised, and there are ofc workers who do a great job regardless :)
I am from Newcastle upon Tyne and I think our hospitality is great up here. We talk to everyone. You could be standing at a bus stop and talk for ages to the stranger next to you. We care a lot about eachother here in the North East. I think it is different in every part of the UK. London people are the total opposite to us. It's probably like that in all the different states in the USA.
Well that’s not technically true, is it, because when the “US” fought for its independence, it was PART of Britain and the people over there were mainly British immigrants. It only became the United States once it had won its freedom.
Good Reaction Guys.I have had 67 fantastic years in London, Born in the heart of S E London in 1954. Moved 12 miles to the very periphery in 1983 and both were/are fabulous experiences. Love The Suburbs and THE 96 Open Spaces near me including 185 Acre Park just 50 yards away and I love visiting friends in Kent and West Sussex and The South Downs but equally enjoy my returns to the most stimulating city in the World with over 100,000 "Places Of Interest" and next week I will return to walk round Hampstead and The Heath. I feel blessed to have been born in that era and in this part of this country and had 7,700 social outings without any major incident.
London is very diverse these days i.e. I believe there are more Non Brits. living and moving around there than there are native Brits The rest of the country is a friend and pleasant as it has always been ! I spent two years living in Italy due to m y husbands job, with a 2 year old, and found the only Italians that offered friendship were a couple that had lived and worked with Brits, in Aden for 20 years. Even they found Italians unapproachable !
Hospitality means something different to Americans than tot he British. To Americans it is being disingenuously "nice" as though someone is your best friend that is a complete stranger. A waiter mithering you with his personal life and anyone in services telling you to have a nice day with a painted smile as they hold their hand out. To a Brit it is being polite and well mannered while ensuring you do not invade peoples privacy with idle chit chat. Maybe the privacy thing goes to the heart of it. It is a huge deal in Britain, maybe because it is a small nation with small houses crowded together and it comes from the social comprises that are required in those situations for peaceful coexistence. If you look at the cramped poorer neighbourhoods in the US and compare with those in the UK then there is no doubt in my mind where I would prefer to live. Politeness and respect are the cornerstones of civil society and I think British hospitality requires those are earned first before a opening up on a more personal level. Then again we could make a case for the weather playing a big part. It is hard to be sociable and chatty when it is tipping down and blowing a gale.🤣 People are always more relaxed and outgoing in warm sunny weather. Either way it is fascinating cultural difference given the US has such a close cultural relationship to Britain.

Where do you draw the line as to what real poverty is? Many people in the UK live in houses that are in bad condition & can't afford to repair them. Many live in very crowded conditions. Many can't afford to eat properly. Many struggle to pay their rent/mortgage. Many are homeless.

I would really like to live in England. It's so unspoiled and quaint, mostly still wild forest which is why they can't catch Robin Hood. Unfortunately it's very dangerous because of the gang war between the Vikings and the Royals so everyone has to wear armor for protection from the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune while they go everywhere on horseback. They have to live in castles with no electricity or faucets and can't fight the gangs because they don't have the second ammendment. If USA intervenes and gives them democracy it would pay for itself with gun and motor sales.
Great reactions to fairly low brow assortment of American opinions. The interviewer should have changed the question because many just reacted to the word UK with: 'United Kingdom'. The highlights for me were those projecting thoughts about their own life onto people in the UK. It would be good to see some more videos of you all getting out and about and reacting to life. It's really odd that poor service carries on in the UK. I visit some great family run businesses that really care about good service. Unfortunately there are too many that continue to get service regardless of how they treat their customers.

They once were great no doubt beyond the greatness of the Roman Empire (by the way I never think Empires are great just a way for the few to exploit the many), but not anymore to justify the big egos many people UK have about the UK and its place in the world, just my opinion from living in UK a long time. It is also climate wise a much gloomier country than the U.S. The sun does not shine as well in the UK compared with most of the U.S. which adds to people being a pissed most of the time about things. You have to be tough and have a thick skinned and mentally strong if you want to live and prosper in the UK. People here can be tough. Weather can be tough and things a l lot of the time don't work the way you want them to which can add to the frustration of living here. Like you guys said, "..English hospitality is not top notch here" or customer service is not that satisfactory here. On top of that its a pricey country to live in which constantly puts pressure on your finances. I am sure it might be a different experience for other people who probably like it more.

Northerners are a lot more polite and hospitable than people from south and down London. Just my personal opinion and experiences.

Americans tend to judge the British Isles by what happens in London. Visit the north and see how we really are.
Not many Americans would want to visit N England, unless they're really into historical things such as York Minster & Hadrian's Wall.
