As a child I once asked my father what was the Colour of the French flag? he responded..."a white cross on a white background"😁👌
Ironically, the white flag with the "Fleurs de Lys" recalls the time when France was the hegemonic continental power (especially Louis XIV), and it took several coalitions to confront them.
Obviously because the English were afraid to fight alone, so they let their allies do the work for them.

A couple of favourite quotes from the Napoleonic Wars: at Waterloo, Napoleon watched as his battalions hammered away at the unbreakable British lines, and in exasperation asked "will the English never show their backs!". One of his Marshalls answered " I fear they will be cut to pieces first!"
Later, at a post battle ball, where the defeated French guests all turned their backs on Wellington and the hostess apologised to him for their action, he replied "it's alright, I've seen their backs before!" 😝

Nelson was a son of Norfolk, he went to school at Paston School, in North Walsham. The school still remains in use today.
I used to go pike fishing in North and South Walsham Broads, I'm Ipswich though so I'm assuming Napoleon would of brought us as allies 🏴
If you ever get the chance to visit Greenwich The Maritime museum. It has Nelsons uniform on display including the bullet hole. We’ll worth a visit lots of interesting stuff to see.

They started it. A famous line spoken by kids in history lessons.
Prior to the battle one of his Captains asked Nelson what he do should if the plan failed. Nelson just said “No captain can do wrong if he lays his ship alongside that of the enemy “.
The politicians should solve the problems regarding Anglo-French relations, including the Jersey dispute & illegal, cross-channel immigration. All the immigrants entering the UK illegally via France have travelled though, over or around safe countries, so they have no legitimate reason to claim asylum in the UK. In the vast majority of cases, they don't even need to be in France. They're safe in Turkey, Italy etc. By breaking the law in order to be choosy, they cease to be refugees & become economic migrants posing as refugees, even if they had been refugees, which many never were.

It's the politicians that actually cause most of the problems. Even most ordinary French people are quite reasonable, although the farmers and fishermen are often something else altogether. Once Napoleon, I mean Micron, is booted out of office, I expect there'll be a return to the normal level of antagonism - somewhere around 'Defcon 3'.

Nelson was beated in Canary Islands and he lost an arm , the spanish Commander let him go away and even gave food to Englishmen ....yes a great strategist not for the Spaniards who already cut off the ears of Jenkings and much more , like a famous English saying that told the Spaniards by sea I want to see them because if it is by land San Jorge protect us cheers

I trust all good Brits, watching this presentation with hearts of oak, did so whilst standing.
I must recommend that you watch the film "Master And Commander".
Brilliant film.
I don't oppose Brexit, but a downside of it is that it's damaged relations between the UK & many nearby countries. Leaving the EU is about being an independent country; avoiding being part of the EU's move towards becoming a federal superstate. Most people in favour of Brexit want good relations with European countries (both those inside & outside the EU) & don't dislike those countries or their people.
The obvious question is why leaving the EU should worsen relations between the UK and member states of the EU?
Britain is still a formal ally through NATO with a lot of the countries and has long standing and close ties with most the states.
The UK has armed forces ready to protect the Baltic states should they ever be invaded by Russia for example.
The problem is that some think the EU as an entity is more important that the citizenship of EU member states. So they would rather undermine EU states' and citizens' interests and harm the UK if it helps to maintain the EU institutions and apparatus.
@@markkelly9621 Many European politicians want a European superstate & already resented the UK for not joining the Eurozone, so leaving the EU gave them another excuse to show their dislike of the UK. They also don't want other EU countries to leave.

That is what it appears like to me based on the actions of some politicians and other actors. Plus, it is not just people directly affiliated with the EU.

I think the French were exasperated with the british navy , there was a quote from a French commander, not sure who, who said ;
Wherever we go in the world, as long as there is enough water to float a ship, we are sure to find the british there waiting for us.

Britain has had to fight for its freedoms all through its history. Its people like Nelson that we have to thank for the freedom we have today.
Nelson at first requested the line "England confides..." but it was pointed out that there was no flag for the word confides and so each letter would need to be spelled out. Only then did he change it to "England expects..."
Nelson was only young when he joined the royal navy. I think about 15. He rose through the ranks to become full admiral.
His Uncle took him to Ovary Staithe, near Burham Market to practice sailing when he was only 12, I used to live there..
Napoleon was a tactical genius, but as history shows the Brits eventually overcome tyrants 💪☝️✌️
I'm not sure he was such a great tactical genius. He got beat in Egypt. He lost in Russia because he got his planning wrong. He had one or two victories because of good tactics but generally he had a bigger army than the opposition. I don't think he was the tactical genius that he's made out to be, he's not comparable with Alexander the great or Julius Caesar. I think he had his scientific people do some good work though. To be honest I don't fully understand the politics of those days but I think he was a people person as opposed to the royalty that ruled Europe who were not so I guess I'd have supported him if I was French. I'm not sure but I think he introduced putting numbers on the doors of houses?

That may be so but it's important to try to understand the politics and thinking of the times. European countries had been ruled by autocratic royalty when the citizens had no voice, no vote and they're lives were at the whim of the rulers. The French royalty and nobility had been ousted by the people. The ruling royalty were the real bullies and Napoleon set himself up as a new ruler but due to the new style of govt in France (democracy) he was lived by the people and in those times he was thought by many in Europe as a liberator. Britain had royalty but also had a parliament that ruled (unlike Europe, who didn't have parliaments). How the British saw him is probably not how France saw him. Of course the power went to his head and he became worse than those he was deposing. He had his scientific people do some good things, mainly inventing the metric system. At that time in Britain the citizens did not have any vote or say in govt spin that respect he was more enlightened than us. I don't think he was a military genius or he would have had greater success and fewer defeats. The Royal family in Britain was scared that we may have a revolution to depose them. The history was written by the wealthy and nobility. He was what he was and for one reason or another England then Britain's rulers have always been at odds with their French counterparts for whatever reasons. He planned the Russian campaign badly at a terrific cost but his loss there was really a loss for the Russian people for whom it would be a long time before they got rid of their autocratic royal family who kept the people in poverty while they lived in luxury. Did you know that napoleon was born in the same year as Nelson and as a 12 year old he wrote to the British admirilty to ask about jou ING our navy. Did you also know that if he was a year older he would never have been emperor because he wouldn't have been a French citizen (the year before he was born in corsica it was part of Italy). Just a different view and a bit of extra information.
Parliament hated him and some MPs were almost hoping he'd fail, Hence why Nelson on his column faces the Palace of Westminster down Whitehall. Victorian trolling 🤣
Enjoyed this reaction. Thought you might be interested to check out footage on You Tube of the Fleet Review held in 2005 here on the Solent which coincided with Trafalgar 200 we had an amazing time! Also the Naval Traditions of Trafalgar and Pickle nights connected to this battle (if you haven't already done so) 😁

Something I watched recently from my old TV recorded collection, I think you would like; I'm not sure if it would be easily available now. It's a most interesting and detailed documentary on the attempted invasion of England by the Spanish Armada. It was a BBC 'Yesterday' Programme on their 'Battlefield Britain' series and told me so much more than any other story or film on the Armada I've ever seen. As I've said - if you can find it Felipe, I'd love to see you watch it and hear what you think of it.

Felipe - of course this may be what you know already, so I am teaching my Grandmother to suck eggs, but if you are further interested in British naval history read Patrick O'Brian, he whose novels "Master and Commander " was based on. Very well researched.
Really enjoy your posts, Felipe, but is there any chance you could clear your nasal passages before filming? All that snorting and hacking (ugh) is a bit off-putting.

Uk view of Europe Fog in the channel Europe isolated..
It sounds odd but Britain was connected to us huge empire so fog in Channel was no issue..

While the Trafalgar documentary is broadly correct, gosh some of the lingo and pronunciation leaves much to be desired.
The French are so bad at wars
Its litteraly the country with the most success at war in terms of ratio Win/loss. It is the English who fight with the blood of their allies, not the other way around.

As a brit, i dont mind saying Napoleon was the greatest military leader.
Perhaps, but at what cost- he once said, "the lives of a million men are nothing to a man such as I, if I lose one army, I'll raise another". And so he did. The allies declared him "the enemy of mankind". He took an army of half a million men into Russia, only 20,000 returned. In contrast, Wellington knew he had "only the one army and I have to take care with it".
Wellington had a lot of respect for Napoleons abilities and he was a tactical genius in his own right.

@@djelalniyazi4090 Indeed, my uncle got tired of his colleague eulogising Napoleon's conquests and claiming he was the greatest general ever, and (this was WAY back in the day mind, the 50s I think, when you could say something like this, and play up to British exceptionalisnm) said "oh sure, he wiped the floor with all these inferior peoples, but the first time he came up against the British, we beat him." 😝
