- Rishi Sunak has again refused to rule out a July general election, amid speculation that a disastrous set of local elections results, this coming Thursday, could force his hand.
The Prime Minister said he would not “say anything more" than he had already said, which is that the national poll is likely to be in the second half of the year.
But poor council results could either lead to a challenge to his leadership, or persuade him that an earlier polling day may be better than limping on with a divided party.
Why is he cackling like a hyena when the whole country is falling apart.

We did. January 2025. If he hasn't called for one by then, it becomes mandatory.
The part that makes no sense to me is the fact they can arbitrarily call for an early election to coincide with events that will make them look good (or more to the point, less nefarious).
I also think that any crime committed in office which they are convicted of, should carry the considerable likelihood of an accompanying charge of High Treason, as they bring profound dishonour and discredit to the noblest duty - service to one's country, and bring the office and position into disrepute.
As it currently stands, the motivation and purpose of government are profoundly misaligned, that misalignment representing the concept of corruption.
The system incentivises corruption, and both passively and actively punishes those with the integrity to resist corruption - and that innate conflict of interest is the cause of the systemic, symptomatic greed we observe.
I'm not an organisational-restructuring expert, but there are plenty out there who could likely eliminate the majority of systemic corruption if given the genuine opportunity.
The single most significant event which genuinely amazes me throughout the history of governance is --King-- / President George Washington refusing absolutism in favour of collegiate democracy. The next most significant is the related election of President Thomas Jefferson to the office in the year 1800 by the United States House of Representatives after no candidate received a majority of electoral college votes.

Here's how elections work in the United Kingdom, for the Office of Prime Minister.
Step 1: The British People attend a Local Election, whereupon a seat in Parliament is awarded to the winning Representative and their Party. This person becomes a Member of Parliament.
Step 2: The British People attend a General Election, upon which the winning Party will be invited to form a Government by the reigning monarch, or their appointee should HM fall ill. Note that even on the day preceding her death, HM Queen Elizabeth II personally invited Prime Minister Elizabeth Truss to form a Government which, unfortunately for HMs legacy, was the shortest Government since the Short Parliament in 1640.
Step 3: Each Party will appoint a single Member of Parliament to be their Party leader. Should that Party win the General Election, their Party leader is the de-facto Prime Minister. If they should resign or be ousted by their own Party, the Party will thus elect a new Party leader, whom will immediately assume the role of Prime Minister.
Too Lazy; Didn't Read: You elect a Party, the Party elects their Party leader, the elected Party elects a leader whom is the de-facto Prime Minister. If they step down, whomever is elected by the Party in their place become the de-facto Prime Minister.

He doesn't. By law, there must be an election in January 2025 at the latest. That's five years since the last parliament began plus the time needed for an election campaign. He's refusing to call it early, not delaying it.

I think the Rwanda policy is here to stay. Siphoning off our tax money via an opaque foreign country is an opportunity that politicians will find impossible to resist. Maybe the greens would stop it because it's in their manifesto but, other than them no politician is going to be standing in the way of that gravy train.
