  • This is a short introduction to the LO206 Briggs & Stratton racing engine explaining cam timing and how the rules are so loose the builders are cheating it. LO206 is a box stock engine with a rule set that is for karting. the Concept is simple buy you car, take the engine out of the box and start racing. The engines are to be equal but this could not be farther from the truth. After the engine builder funny business they are drastically faster. The biggest cheat is the hardest to preform and the hardest to catch because you cant see it or hear it but you are now faster than the rest of the pack. The cam shaft is being twisted to a more favorable position and the current 2023 rules allow for it. The first cam number at .006 you are allowed 8 degrees of variance and other numbers 4-8 degrees also - so bend the cam in the neg side not advanced and you will have a rocket. They have bee doing it since the flat head days and it is still going on today. Briggs could stop it all by fixing the rules but the national kids would have a much harder time wining. This advantage is preformed by certain builders for certain kids for the parents of influence. There is a simple fix to the problem and Briggs wont do it. First you could tighten the rules to be 1/2 degree of the stock cam and then they would have to release the cam center lines. With a center line in place the twist game would be over. Briggs claims to take 3600 points on each cam to ensure they are all the same so the problem is not with the manufactured parts but with the amount of room in the rules for the twist. with 4-8 degrees on the table you only need 4 degrees to get max performance of the engine so the rule is wide open. since many don't understand what the numbers mean they don't know what they are looking at and it is slipped right into the rule book. Briggs knows all about the problem because i have been asking them to fix it for years. So just know that when you get into this form of racing the engine will not be equal and catching the front of the pack will be a bigger task than you think. Many have been calling for this to be fixed but Briggs is no longer commenting on the problem. Briggs on 1-15-2023 did release a new rule stating that they have all the engine numbers and know the cams that came in each engine and are going to release them to "tech Officials" but no tech official i spoke with has them or can get them. the rules need to change or the tools will be developed so everyone can have the same advantage.

While you are allowed to be as much as 2 degrees off "without issue". The allowance of 2 degrees at a single point is to allow for a piece of dirt or grit that may be on the lobe that messes up the lift measurement (although from a tech perspective I don't think this is necessary). That is at one point (ie one check point :EX .050), not at each check point. Based on my experience, these cams are pretty consistent all the ay through the profile; If I am in the center at .020, I am usually dead center at .050, .100, .150 etc...). If I push that limit on the .020 on the intake for example, I will have problems meeting most if not all the of the other measurement points on the intake lobe. Therefore I think your claim of "8 degrees" of play is bit of hyperbole to make your point. Furthermore, we also know there is only one direction you want to move the cam, so really we're talking about two degrees to work with. That said, that is enough to move the centerline of the cam and get a little more favorable centerline.

For all the talk of this going on, I’ve yet to see any empirical data on performance improvement. With such a low output engine, I’m curious to see what if any difference it makes.
Unless something changed under Dan’s leadership, it’s highly unlikely Briggs are protecting engine builders. That would be a first.

For you new to 206 racing viewers - Please do not waste time and effort here. It is an exaggeration and misleading information to sell a product you do NOT NEED. Focus on consistent maintenance for both engine and chassis. Set up of your chassis and driving technique is where the speed is in this class. LOW cost High Value.
Two degrees is the edges of this far This is NOT where you are losing speed. I find it interesting he has a new video that shows more detail and comments are turned off. It proves the point of the futility of the effort, it puts unnecessary stress on the cam and lifter. Save your money for tires!

You obliviously have time, skills and talent. You are misleading people who are new to kart racing and the 206 program. Yes cam twisting is a thing. Been with us in the first years of four-cycle engines in kart racing. I have no doubt it is done on Clones. But why when you can buy an aftermarket cam?
For the 206 the seal and a proper tech program eliminates this issue. There is far more difference between proper gear selection, tire pressure and condition, chassis set-up, and experience.
You should focus your extensive knowledge and talent sharing these details and not hearsay and unsupported claims.

@@ameliaairhartracing7566 Briggs are aware of seal tampering, that's why post race tech can (and has) gone down to breaking the seal and inspecting the bottom end if deemed necessary.
The seal is part of a system, it's not THE system.
People underestimate Briggs. Briggs know of all the $hit pulled with animals and flatheads. But builders and racers will always hype shit up because it's in our nature, even if it's to the detriment of the sport.
Great example in this video. Talks about cam twisting, implies it's prevalent, implies it's whats keeping drivers from getting to the front, implies that Briggs are in some sort of cahoots with engine builders..... But he also has a cam twisting kit for sale :D
It's a classic sales technique, even if it wasn't intended to be. Create division, sell to the disenfranchised.
