You can never go wrong with George Strait.
Looking for eight refers to how long a cowboy has to stay on a bronc or bull. The judge also looks at how they sit, arm wave, etc. Howdy from Wyoming!
Thanks for that! I’m still learning!!
Its 8 seconds.
Howdy, neighbor!
-The South Rectangle State
You have a good read on this song. This is a classic rodeo song. Amarillo is just the next rodeo and that's what's on his mind. Most cowboys aren't rich and don't make it big, but it's about the lifestyle. "Looking for 8 when they pull that gate" means he's gonna try to ride the bull or bronc for the required 8 seconds and he's hoping the judge gives him a good score. The subject in the song has lost many things, but he's still doing what he loves and all he knows to do is keep going to hit the next show.
Honey, I will take George Strait over almost ANY "modern" country singer!
I can sort of understand why this kind of country isn't popular in Europe but it always amazes me just how unknown George is outside the US. He has 13 Multi-Platinum albums, 33 Platinum Albums, and 38 Gold Albums and has sold over 100 million records. There is something about all of his songs that give that special feel about them. I've looked for George Strait reaction videos here on CZcams and there are hardly any. And of the few George Strait reaction videos, the songs are his slowest ones. I hope you will do more of his songs.
This is the western in country and western, and an amazing song. "They took my saddle in Houston" means he sold his saddle to pay his entry fee to ride in Houston.
They don't call him the King of Country for nothing.
There is a reason George Strait is called King George, he is the absolute KING of Country music (especially the sub genre of Texas Country). He has more than 60 number one songs and he has been a huge influence all the Country singers that came after him.
The line when they pull that gate he is referring to the people that pull the open the gate to start the ride in the rodeo. Looking for 8 is in reference to the the fact that the cowboy has to stay on for a minimum of 8 seconds for the ride to actually get scored. Taking his saddle could refer to him losing the top spot of riders since it is t unusual for them to win a saddle along with the prize money or it could be referring to the fact that it also isn’t unusual for them to pawn their prize saddles/gear when money is tight so they can continue on down the road on the rodeo circuit. Amarillo is a town in Texas that is considered a big rodeo town and is also the home for the National Quarter Horse Association, which is a favorite horse breed for not just rodeos but also for working ranch hands (cowboys).
Don't judge a book...George and Norma have known each other since they were little children and have been happily married and devoted to each other for over 50 years. They had a fairy tale romance and George Strait is one cowboy that lives up to his name.
There are so many incredible George Strait songs but The Fireman is a so fun to listen to!
You can't go wrong with King George!!!! He is the best of country music, which is why he's King George!!!!! Anything he sings is amazing!!!!
George Strait is one of the greats. I like every song he has sung. He's not bad for us ladies to look at either. :D
George Strait music is comfort food for my soul.
Amen! Thanks for your appreciation of this kind of music. Rodeo is a way of life in the west.
Rodeos started hundreds of years ago with the Spanish vaquero/cowboy in the south west when the Spanish controlled the area. It basically was a way to unwind and see who was better at being a cowboy than other in their area. Now it is a sport and a life style for some. George Strait just has a great delivery and style and was always himself.
George Strait is Frank Sinatra in a cowboy hat. The king of country music.
Im 26 and ive been listening to King George since before i knew what words were, much less a song. I differentiated the albums i wanted my mom to play in the truck by the color of the shirt he was wearing on the cover ("Mommy play pink George!" and for the holidays, "Play Christmas George!"). Im certain he played a small role in shaping me into who I am today not only in music taste, but as a person as well. My favorite song of his is "Cowboys like Us". Although, its tough to pick a favorite when he has over 60 #1 songs.
Chris LeDoux- This Cowboys Hat
Do yourself a solid...find, pick and play ANY clip (live from AT&T stadium) his farewell concert. You must hear him live and how good he still is!
George always brings a smile! If you want another song about rodeo stuff, Aaron Watson, July in Cheyenne. It is hard to separate rodeo from Texas, Oklahoma, Wyoming, and Montana.
Or “rodeo” by Garth Brooks
Will definitely look them up. Thanks.
George is real country and actually competed in rodeos and later put on his own rodeos. In the song. Amirilllo is just the next stop on the circuit. Great song! Thanks for the reaction.
Please react to “Nobody in his right mind would have left her” by George Strait. I really enjoyed you learning and appreciating Amarillo By Morning. It may be a mystery to men all over the world as to why American women fall apart when it comes to our King George, but just keep listening and you will understand.
I followed George from Dancehall’s before he hit is big so, been a Strait fan since 1979. George is the same today as he was in 1979. A good man, humbled and The King of Country! This footage was his big break at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo; filling in at the last minute for Eddie Rabbit who was ill.
Country music was never the same. Also, George is a real Cowboy, a champion Team Roper.
I remember when this came out. I was a teenager and into rock. My mom listened to country, but I did always really like George Strait.
carrying your love with me
cross my heart
all my exes
love without end amen
all great george strait songs
All hail King George. He is the very best of the best of the best.
My wife's cousin, Terry Stafford wrote this song. We're still a huge rodeo community. If you ever happen to be in Amarillo, hit me up. We'll show you a good time.
George Straight is marvelous ! Amarillo by morning, is a personal favorite. My favorite by Straight is "The Man in Love with you". My (late) wife and I used to two step to this every Friday night at the South Miami Lions Club at Country Dance night.....How about reacting to Bob Wills "San Antonio Rose" that classic...its called a Rodeo (row-de-oh, not row-day-oh) and yes there is one at every Texas County Fair - each county has one. 8 refers to staying on the bronc (wild horse) for 8 seconds (or longer) in the competition, but the minimum you have to stay on is 8 seconds
George Strait retired 8 years ago after more than 30 years in the business, 60 number 1 country songs, and numerous other hits. Today he indulges his love of family, farming, ranching, and rodeo. Oh sweet retirement.
@George Strait The first GS song I ever heard was "If You're Thinking You Want a Stranger" and I was hooked. No one seemed to know who you were back then but I had a feeling you were going to be bigger than the average country singer and boy was I right. I loved your music throughout your entire career and I couldn't even get mad at you when you past my main man Conway Twitty for the most #1 country songs/hits. Unfortunately I never got the chance to see one of your concerts though I always wanted to. Hope you're enjoying your retirement but we miss hearing new music from you. Take Care!
@George Strait Hello, I currently live in North Carolina and, as I said in my previous message, I have never had the pleasure of going to one of your concerts, although I always wanted to.
King George!
King George has a ton of good tracks. This is probably my favorite. Other contenders are "The Chair", "I Can Still Make Cheyenne", and "Check Yes Or No".
George Strait meant so much country music for so long and really carried it for a couple of decades. One thing to note, he isn't a song writer. I think hes had some credits earlier in his career but when he blew up he was strictly a singer. Ive learned to not let that take away from the amazing things some performers have accomplished. For a while I really looked down on him because he wasn't an artist in my mind. But there's no denying how much of an icon he is and I gladly still enjoy his music.
You've come to expect by now i suppose, but here's a reminder about The Bird Hunters by Turnpike Live at ACL.
Got that in for next week brother!
George Strait is The King
From Ireland. Listening to him for 25 years. You have a lot of great songs to discover here. Ive seen alan jackson, terri clark, tim mcgraw, tracy lawrence. Need to see GS
George Strait was a champion bull rider in the US military.
I'm sorry I wrote it wrong. George strait was a champion bull rider after he got out of the military.
I ain't got a dime, but what I got is mine. I ain't rich but Lord I'm free. I listened to this song a million times
after I walked out of a bad
marriage. It made me feel
good because I was finally free even though I was broke. It all worked out for me but I still credit this song
thanks to King George! 😉
Hello from Cody Wyoming USA! I'm two years late but you're awesome😊
He had to sell the saddle or pawn it in order to get gas or the entrance fee. Often you sleep in your truck in order to not have to pay for a hotel
A Brazilian singer made a portuguese version of this song and was very very successful. Last year I heard Amarillo By Morning and found out that the song in portuguese was just a version. I felt cheated like I had lived a lie for 26 years.
George Strait is the King of country. Amarillo is a rodeo town. George was a rodeo man before making it big. He has an album of 50 number 1 hits. There was one new song in it and it made it to number one also.
It’s a song about the hard life of a traveling cowboy who makes his living preforming his skills in the rodeo. The 8 line refers to the length of time you need to stay on a bull, or Branco, in order to have your ride qualify to receive a score by the judges.
My favorite from him is his song "True". It's not an intricate piece, but it is a beautiful bit of poetry anyway.
King George, 61 number one hits
Amarillo, Texas has huge Rodeos...This song is about a Rodeo Cowboy chasing a dream...to be the best Rodeo Cowboy. George Strait is a real Cowboy. By thexway, George Strait has 33 platinum albums, and several double platinum. He iscin 3rd place for most platinum albums in the world of music, with the Beatles being 2nd, and Elvis Presley at number 1...George Street is the King if Country Music across the globe....
I’m from Amarillo so this is pretty cool!
Hell, George will tell you......
Around here
Bob Wills is still the King
We didn’t have too much trouble at his shows
Long live Cowboys
I’ve only gotten to the point of your first response after the initial chorus and SUBSCRIBED! Fellow you sure are observant and that’s a very respectable trait. Bravo
Can’t beat this!
He’s known as King George in country music! Listen to “I Cross My Heart” in movie PURE COUNTRY!! Try I’m Carrying Your Love With Me”!!! New Country is quite different from traditional Story telling country songs!! When you ride bulls n the rodeo you have t stay on for 8 seconds or you’re disqualified! Nice Reaction!!!
,
, Really Nice Reaction!!
@George Strait Oh my what a treat!! I never dreamed you see my reply! I’m from small town of Galeton in northern Colorado...and yes I’ve seen you at Cheyenne Frontier days!! Thanks for all the wonderful songs recorded over the years!!
The king
The man had 60 number one hits, pure excellence
San Antonio to Amarillo is about an 8 hour drive. And you never leave Texas, lol. The old joke is in the US, 100 years is a long time, and in the UK 100 miles is a long way.
10 miles is a long way over here 😂
He has 61 top 10 in country charts so yeah some good story songs.
That is George riding..
love this
!!!
Good job buddy! Keep up the good work! Country music forever!
@George Strait listening a long time friend! I guess sometime around 1980 keep on trucking!
New sub here..... Long live King George!
Most of the footage is in the Astrodome in Houston Texas. He will be closing out the rodeo in Houston in 2021
And just FYI, making Amarillo from San Antonio over night even tho they are both in Texas means no sleep as it is an 8-9 hour drive...
Rodeo... 8 seconds on the horse,or bull. Then the judges,"judge" how well you rode the animal. I was fortunate to meet George at the Agusta Cutting Horse Futurity, long ago. True gentleman. Acted as though you were his total focus, while you had his attention. Awesome memory. Thanks
He is so young in this video
Yehaww from San Antonio, Texas 🤠
This is one of my ALL TIME favorites
"The Chair" by George Strait is pretty good. It's unique because it doesn't have a chorus.
Chris ledoux is a true legend you need to listen to he does western country!
HOWDY TEXANS THE MOST BEST GORGUES FAVORITE SONGS .
You should do George Strait - you look so good in love👍🔥
The anthem for every rodeo man out there!
Houston, Santa Fe, San Antonio, Amarillo all on the rodeo circuit. 8 seconds are required on a bull on bronco ride to qualify for the judges to give you a score, which is based on your skill and the energy the animal exhibited during that eight seconds.
About the cowboy life on the rodeo circuit. Another one is "I Can Still Make Cheyenne".
I am not sure what it means by its rodeo talk its about a rodeo performer . Love his music thanks for sharing .
One of my favorite songs! It’s official, Oli (Olllie?)...you’re one of us now 🤠😂
Thank you so much Kara, I'm learning still! You got it right the first time 😊
Looking for eight: An eight second ride is 10/10 when you’re bucking.
I knew I went waaaay too modern/bro country with my assumption 😫 that makes sense. I’ll remember for when I visit!
The 94 Club I fell out when you said skimming the crowd for an eight. I was taken aback by the fact this wasn’t common knowledge and I didn’t know there wasn’t some type of rodeo elsewhere. Glad I could help. When you visit, please go to the rodeo!
Also, the reason he doesn’t have anything and they took his saddle is because cowboys get addicted to the thrill of rodeoing and they sell all their stuff to pay entry fees so they can get their high and their spotlight.
czcams.com/video/CTNWGf7KQn0/video.html
"lost my saddle in Houston" could just mean he got bucked off quick in the Houston Rodeo, could also mean he had to sell it or wagered it no matter what way you read it its about how hard the road has been and how he has nothing to show for it but loves it. So you will find him at the next rodeo in Amarillo.
8 is the number of seconds you have to ride the bull or horse to make it complete ride and get scored.
You should check out some Alabama. They were discovered here in my hometown so they were a staple on the record player around my house my entire life. Shaggin' On The Boulevard is a perfect depiction of my childhood.
React to Chris LeDoux's version of Amarillo by Morning.
My favorite version. Chris Ledoux was my idol.
My favourite ledoux song was for your love
Re-ride is my favorite I think.
Looking for eight at the gate is trying to stay on a bull ride for eight seconds highest score and very difficult.
Looking for 8 when they pull that gate means he’s hoping to stay on the bull for the full 8 seconds which is the best you can do in bull riding☺️😉.
"Looking for 8". Eight seconds on the bull.
8 seconds is the time needed on the bull.. judges of the rodeo.. Rodeo circuit goes from city to city.. it's a difficult life.. but often romanticized as a life if independence.
Good reaction to a great song. Another great one by him is "Troubador", give it a listen
Try troubadour by George Strait. really great song
The Chair is a classic by him.
React to Troubador next time! You would love it
Definitely brother! I'll check it out!
Looking for 8 refers to how long he has to stay on to have a complete ride at the Rodeo.
The guitar by Guy Clark! a classic singer songwriter with all sorts of jams. Also check out Chris Knight's It aint easy being me and some Brent Cobb!
If you want to know about bull riding, watch a movie called 8 seconds.
George Strait - I Can Still Make Cheyenne.
Try "I can still make Cheyenne"...
George is the KING ...please do more you won’t be sorry. If you want a really good look into the rodeo life watch the movie “eight seconds” It’s based on the life of a real rodeo cowboy
Cowboys make my legs go weak. OMG I love masculine men!!
You should react to Conway Twitty, Don't take it away and also Keith Whitley I'm no stranger to the rain
The Amarillo rodeo requires contestants to be present to sign up, which begins at sunrise.
Amarillo is a full nights drive and it'd be quite a race to get there if you competed in the San Antonio rodeo the night before.
The Houston rodeo awards a saddle to its bronco riding champion...or it used to.
A common injury of bronco and bull riders is a broken leg.
Buck-riders must remain seated on their ride for at least 8 seconds to qualify for their score. They're also judged for their composure on the ride. A rider who maintains steady presence, rather than flopping around, will be judged with a greater score...thereby ranking better.
The channel creator got the rest of the song's meaning quite well...especially for not having a basic understanding of rodeo sports.
BTW, I actually was at the rodeo in Houston the year George Strait played this song. I also competed in Junior division barrel racing as a youth; taking State twice, and ranking Regionally several times...so this song has a special place for me.
It's called the Rodeo
Lookin for 8 when they pull that gate. In bronc riding and bull riding you try to stay on 8 seconds then a couple judges score the animals athletic performance from 0 to 50 points then the other judge scores the rider from 0 to 50.
When he says I am looking for 8’s he is referring to when writing a bowl or a king bronc you have to stay on it for at least eight seconds to qualify to be scored by the judge he says when they pour that gate it means when they pull the gate to let the BOR bro are running LL to the rodeo arena for you to hold onto for at least eight seconds song is a great song detailing what a cowboy might endure wow they are all the rodeo circuit other great George Strait song recommendations would be the chair and I got a car the Best day I saw god today and weight of the badge and Trubador
Nice to see somebody react to real country music and not the rural pop bullshit on the radio these days. People say the country sound on the radio today is progression and so we should just get over it and get with the times..I say no sir. Real country is being made every day. It's just not where Nashville and the record industries think the money is. They're the ones screwing over real country. If you haven't already check out:
Some new school:
Cody Jinks- Somewhere in the middle
Gethen Jenkins- This ol prison
T.J. Hernandez- right all my wrongs
Frank Foster- Louisiana
And some old school..
Hank Jr.- Kaw Liga
Alabama- Dixieland Delight
Charlie Daniels- Simple Man
David Allan Coe- If that ain't country
Country is still alive!!!!
The king of country is always among my best. Please check out his song Adalida
